user reviews of the Turks Head, Penzance

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I wouldn't have minded this place but it was just too pushy for food.

The moment we walked in we were ask and waitresses were hovering everywhere.

The pub is a pleasant place with decent ales, but we felt like they didn't really want us there as we were not eating.

5/10

The Turk's Head was a bonus pub for me that I'd not planned on visiting. Just a few doors up from the more famous Admiral Benbow, the Turk's Head is actually older and a little less pretentious. It was very busy on my Saturday evening visit, with all food tables occupied and people spilling outside. I managed to grab a stool at the bar. Ales were Sharp's Doom Bar, Skinner's Hops n Honey & Betty Stogs & Timothy Taylor Landlord. Cider was Old Rosie. Friendly service.

A great place to drink and eat. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Food is spot on and the beer is top notch. Worth trying a pint of Turk's Head Ale brewed by Sharps in Cornwall, so much better than the now doomed Doom Bar which I believe is brewed in Burton upon Trent.

Allegedly this is the lodest pub in Penzance, well managed, possibly a bias to the "dry" side over "wet" sales. Four ales on from Skinners and St.Austell in excellent condition, I would prefer to have seen an ale from a Cornish micro Brewery ( there are more than enough to choose from) such as Chough Brewery who are brewing really fantastic beer on the Lizard peninsula. A Cask Marque accreditation in the window,as usual a good pointer.

Called in last Saturday, quite late on, the lady who served our ale should be congratulated for pulling a perfect pint, however she went home before we were able to thank her properly.

Although the Landlord was prepaing to close up, he spent a good 15 minutes talking shop with us.

Our Callum scores it 10 woofs, for doggy friendly

A hidden gem that you, MUST TRY

Decent beer, but as we were scouting for places to eat rather than actually buying food, the landlady(?) was "terse" :/ There's better places to eat in Penzance so didn't go back.

A pub wannabe restaurant. Decent cask ales, the food (after having been sent back twice for not being what I ordered) was good.

Lovely traditional well preserved olde worlde pub, with a warm and friendly welcome, serving excellent real ales. Great choice of delicious meals to suit most tastes, with daily changing specials, mainly locally landed fish. Drinks and food are all served by happy and friendly staff, who clearly enjoy their work, which makes fro a happy ship. Highly recommended.

One of the best in town.

Locals mix well with the tourist / passing trade. Good range of beers and ciders - noticed Hobgoblin in the fridge, but stuck to the Stella! Mrs T complained the coffee was weak!

A fine pub - 4 beers on offer including Doombar and Betty Stoggs. Food looked good but wasn't tasted so can't say. Friendly staff.

Rather splendid. Ales (esp. Betty Stogs) well worth drinking - and most of the food serving is mercifully away from the bar. A thirst-inducing climb back to the bar from the lavatories!

Love this pub, good ale, not overpriced and nice food, but most of all like the ambience here.

Managed to drop lucky and get a table in the bar as soon as we entered the door, on a busy Saturday evening. Adnams Explorer and Doom Bar were in good fettle, and the bar food very tasty and good value. Staff seem like a well organised team and make it look easy when it's very busy. Well done - consistent through the years.

We spent a long weekend in Penzance and called in here a couple of times. Staff and locals very friendly and chatty. Didn't eat here but the food looked most apertising, we will definately try it on our next visit, don't be detered by the small bar area, there are lots of interesting dining areas within this pub.
A very good choice of beer and cider for such a small bar.

Popped in last Friday on my annual visit to Penzance.
Even a bunch of 8 knucledraggers from Wadebridge couldn't spoil the enjoyment.

I thought the Betty Stogs was better than the Doom Bar.

A cracking little restaurant/pub just off the main strip of town.

Three Cornish ales were on offer when I visited in good nick, so first impressions were positive. The menu looked good and Mrs Quinno-friendly so we both ate well - and I can thoroughly recommend this place on our experience. The fish was lovely and cooked quite above the average standard, the service was good too (given the amount we paid for a dire experience in the Seafood Cafe in St Ives a couple of days later, we really did appreciate the quality and value here even more in retrospect).

The pub itself is a decent size, though watch the couple of steps you need to descend before you hit main bar. The inside has a few nik-naks lying around (as do most of the pubs in the area it seems) but they are a lot less physically obtrusive than others nearby. The old pub sign above the fireplace is a nice touch.

All-in-all, well-worth a stop, especially if you fancy some nice food with a good local beer. Well done staff and management.

This quaint pub is situated down an attractive road running away from the town centre and is the towns oldest pub dating back to 1233. It was also the first pub in the country to carry the name Turks Head. A Spanish invasion in 1595 put paid to much of the original pub (as well as the Union Hotel a few doors up the road) and the current building is more 16th/17th century in appearance. The central doorway leads straight to the main bar, a warm and comfortable carpeted room with plenty of brass and copper nick nacks, trays, bedwarmers and a collection of tankards and water jugs. A brick fireplace in the corner has one of the old pub signs above it as an eyecatching centerpiece. To the right behind the bar is a neat and tidy room that appears to be used more for dining. A corridor to the left of the bar leads to a pleasant beer garden and the wall displays include another of the old pub signs and a collection of old Bank notes and coins. There is also a staircase down to a dungeonlike cellar bar (it was closed on my visit but I sneaked down for a peek) and there are apparently the remains of some old smugglers tunnels that run underneath the building as well as some priest holes. The general atmosphere is quite relaxing and having had only 3 landlords in the past 100 years, you can expect a good level of consistency regarding service and general ambience. 3 decent enough ales on my visit (Doom Bar, Sharps Own and Betty Stoggs + a further pump unused) and we also had a relatively inexpensive but good quality meal following a recommendation. Overall this is certainly one of the best pubs in town and somewhere away from the more unruly pubs that the town centre offers.

Betty Stogs and Butcombe excellent. Lovely little pub warm and friendly, the food looked very interesting as well but we didn't try any, this visit.

Doom Bar fantastic - beer garden sheltered from lunatic gale force winds - great location (Chapel St) - come again? Oh alright then if you must - Betty Stogs rocked on the day....

Great Doom Bar, lovely thai curry.
When I'm back in Penzance, I'll be back in here too.

Very nice food and quite a good choice. There is a small garden area which is lovely for summer evenings.

A dead nice place for a few drinks. The food is supposed to be nice but I've never tried it. The place is quite expensive though and there are cheaper places around. Mind you, Pz is an expensive town for what you get.

Excellent boozer with some tremendous food, the roast and sausage/mash hit the spot after a long trip.

Proper pub. Popular and unthreatening.
