Been closed for a while. It's going to be demolished to make way for an old peoples home apparently. The Whitley Bay brewery is now based in the ex-Fitzgeralds pub in the town centre, renamed as The Brewery.

The smaller King George pub now has its own attached brewery - Whitley Bay Brewing Co. Popped in last night. The place was very busy. Two of the new breweries beers were on - Spanish City Blonde 4.2 and Slow Joe 3.9. Both were excellent. With the imminent opening of the Dog & Rabbit brewpub in Whitley and the planned micro bar on Monkseaton station, things are definitely looking up one the real ale front.

This place has been split into two venues. The original 42nd Street has been joined by the King George next door. Sells two real ales normally and a range of bottle conditioned real ales from the excellent Three Kings brewery. The King George is really quite small, but has recently been extended to include a pool table. The same real ales appear to be on in 42nd Street too.

Absolutely terrible place, my drink was stolen 3 times in a row and staff were nothing short of abusive and unhelpful. Stay away.

Pub looks aged from outside and inside would definately NOT reccomend for a family meal.
Hand Drier in left gents toilet has not worked for years which sort of sums up the effort of the management staff... zero
Pints sometime smell of "dirty dog" smell and beer/lager on draft is awful.
DJ and night club times upto 2am are ok, but count your change from the bar as have been overcharged many times now without an apology when questioned.

I blow hot and cold with this pub, because I've had good and bad sessions here over the years. Conclusion: it's pot luck. Yes, it often gets full of the worst the 'stag/hen/chav' modern pub scene has to offer. Take Bungie's point about prats spoiling for fights and about nasty women - but the fact that none of them have ever draped themselves around me does nowt for my self-esteem. Certainly not the classiest bar around, but to be fair, I've been in here and the atmosphere has been fine, with a fair mix of people. The bar staff and door staff have been OK too, and that's good considering that the bar staff often have to work their butts off. As the man says, one of the better pubs on the South Parade strip - but it's all relative.

Re Below - There is a great reason not to have a night out in Whitley Bay. Its full of nasty women with blotchy legs staggering around the town and into this bar, screaming loudly and draping themselves over anything male - and the males - all dressed in the uniform blue checked shirts and over powering aftershave or vain and obnoxious prats spoiling for a fight. I know - I lived there for 30 years!!! 42nd has been a Whitley stalwart for around 20 years and in its time has won awards, it is one of the better bars in Whitley Bay, but that in itself doesnt say much.

Often seems to be first on the list for the Whitley Bay crawl, gets busy about 8 then everyone seems to move on to the other delights of this FANTASTIC town. If you aint had a night in Whitley Bay, WHY THE HELL NOT ? Clean pub, decent staff and customers.
