Albion, Portisheadback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We were at the Portishead Albion pub this evening and received the worse service ever. We are very regulars at this pub and today I ordered my food and paid a 20 but received the balance for 10. When I asked the guy at the counter he was very sincere and said he will get the till opened for the balance amount. He called his manager who came and balanced the till and told that his till is already short by 2 and I had paid 10 for sure, the rule is if there's no excess in the till end of the story! I only had a 20 note in my hand at that time and I am more than sure what I paid. The manager treated me as a thief and handled the situation very unprofessionally in front of all the other customers. I tried to explain to him that there is clearly something wrong with his tills if 2 is anyway short, but that is not my fault. This pub had great food, but to all who go there, make sure to check your balance and don't get yourself treated like a thief in front of others. I wouldn't go there ever again.

Made a return visit with relatives this last wek. My pint of bitter was a bit cloudy. However the 10oz Gammon I had was good and a good price. Mothers sausage and mash was just that, powdered mash though. Sisters meal run of the mill It was very busy and all in all I'd say an improvement on the pub before it's refurb.

A large, recently refurbished pub which I understand re-opened just a few weeks ago. Its a pleasant enough place, but in a somewhat bland, corporate, mass produced sort of way and is no doubt indistinguishable from numerous other GK pubs up and down the country. It will no doubt appeal to the many local families in Portishead, but whether the discerning drinker will make a beeline for it is another matter.
Its divided in to several different areas, with various different decor styles. Much of the pub is carpeted, but there are tiles around the bar and one of the rooms at the rear which is up a couple of steps has a wooden floor. Walls are a mixture of exposed stone work and various shades of paintwork I spotted maroon, cream and gastro-pub brown. There was a scattering of small colour photos, and a partition made out of glass fronted racking full of wine bottles.
Beers on tap were a slightly disappointing Abbott Reserve and Greene King IPA. My drinking companion was singularly unimpressed and queried if that was all they had. The barmaid looked somewhat perplexed and replied Errr, ales? Errr, yeah. He decided to opt for a Guinness. Ciders were somewhat better represented with Blackthorn, Thatchers Gold and Stowford Press, as well as a hot mulled one.

It's been just over a year since i last viisted this hostelery. Looks just the same although didn't notice any TV screens, the background music still there and, a bit loud. Had a good welcome from the current incumbents (i assume). I tried the Hunters chicken came well presented and tasty, my only critic being a little too much dressing on the salad and the chips need to be crispier. A nice pint of the Green King IPA. my party were very highly commenting on the food/ service/ etc, a thumbs up all round. If todays sample is a yard stick i'd say it was surpassing the Windmill. well done i shall be back shortly to try something else. Hopefully not a fluke..well done all the same.

I visited the Albion recently with my wife and we both found that the food was first rate (it has moved on from the Hungry Horse days) and the beers include a number of interesting guests.
I gave up smoking about 18 months ago after 50 years of smoking so I was interested and impressed to see that provision for smokers had been made at some considerable expense to the pub.

Pub that has had a refurb, but why all the tv screens, have tried the food but not what i would say good.Sunday lunch arrived in about 2mins.Why do people who refurb these places, all think,we need loud blaring music/several tv screens/pool tables.....THINKING? if your retailing beers/spirits and food surely this is were the quality and money should be spent on producing first class products, not these glitzy extra,s

Might be GK but sat outside yesterday in the hot sun with a beautiful pint of Ruddles County served straight from the barrel behind the bar so a def 8/10.

Curse of Quinno strikes again! Has now been refitted in the classic Greedy King style (cream and chocolate) and now seems to be a pub/lounge bar effort. The rotten window frames have gone, and there's now some cleaner tables and comfy seats. Vibe is now more warm and relaxed, though still quite quiet.
So onto the beer, what's new? An extra GK handpull (Speckled Hen) and also guest beer (Bateman's XXX, in decent nick from stillage), proving that Greedy Kings shenanigans at the Lewes Arms is just childish corporate posturing.
The Albion is worth visiting again for the first time in years, but it has a long way to go to make up the ground it has lost in Portishead to the Windmill and the Poacher.

Typical hungry horse pub, poor food, poor choice of beer. At least it has a skittle alley i guess..

Gone downhill even further - window panes are beginning to rot!
Beer-wise, 2 GK ales on in acceptable quality, though the IPA was off two days earlier according to my companion. And whether anyone actually drinks them in here is a moot point. Now the Windmill has a got the beers in with a rotating guest, this place can't even claim the uniquness of real ale in the town and I think most of the drinkers now live up there.
Also had the footy results up on a static screen...but only the Championship's! Bristols City and Rovers didn't even get a look in! What muppet lets this happen?
So now just playing host to the podgy Porty and their spud-faced nippers eating mega plates of chips and deep-fry, like Michelle McManus and Vanessa Feltz having just heard the four minute warning.
Thoroughly depressing, I won't be back. To think where this was where I spent many of my formative years!

Used to be a really good (in Portishead terms) place to go, but since Les' departure and it's conversion to a hungary horse, the atmosphere has departed somewhat. At least it has decent ale though, even if it is Greene King. In Portishead that's pretty revolutionary in itself.
