lovely local pub with decent beer. Nice atmosphere and generally quite busy. Shame they don't let children in as would be nice to visit at weekends but nice for a quiet drink in the evening

Some good guest beers on recently. Wye Valley Butty Bach and Cwrw Dewi Sant, Sharp's Pilsener and Ashley Down Primrose. Currently the most interesting beer range in the area.

I was at the beer festival too and agree that the Tawny Owl was flat. However, the other beers I tried were fine. Milk St Funky Monkey seemed to be the locals' favourite and it's returned as a guest ale.

Attended the POT's first beer festival last night, and although great that they have put this thing on, sad to say that some of the ales were not served in great nick (how this is possible during a beer festival when the ales are bought in specifically, perhaps someone could let me know!). The Tawny Owl was totally flat as was the Proper Job . The former was taken back where is was commented by the staff that perhaps 'it wasn't poured correctly by the bar women' Oh dear. And they carried on serving this one - the chaps to our left were commenting on the poor quality. Also, at least two of the beers were served cloudy - Lighthouse, and the Arbor Ales. The BB Factory Acer was fantastic, So cheers to the POT for the festival, but please try to up the quality next time

A curiously named and good sized pub on three levels. The main bar is the largest, with smaller rooms at each end, one slightly higher and one slightly lower.

Its got a decent cosy pub ambience to it in spite of its size, with carpeting throughout, chunky wood beams on the ceiling and a real looking fire (I think it was gas, but it was better than some!). Its known locally as the POT at WOT and appropriately there is plenty of Post Office paraphernalia around, such as a genuine full size old red telephone kiosk in the corner that has now been put in to use as a coat cupboard! There is also an old post box inset in to the wall and a very old fashioned telephone mounted on the wall behind the bar. All a bit quirky, but it certainly adds to the atmosphere.

Interior dcor is completed with plenty of mirrors and pictures, some again Post Office related such as drawings of old pillar boxes along with some black and white photos of the local area in bygone times. I didnt check the full menu, but noticed a couple of chalkboards up detailing a selection of baguettes and pizzas. The latter are, I believe, a speciality. There is also a small outside patio area at the back with a warming heater. There was a plasma on in the main bar, but the volume was down fairly low and it didnt seem to intrusive. Staff all seemed friendly.

The regular beers on tap appeared to be Bass, Courage Best, Doom Bar and Otter Bitter. The guest on this occasion was Caledonian Over The Bar. The solitary cider was Stowford Press.

All in all this seems to be a great, friendly local pub and well worth a visit if youre in the area.

Comfortable pub spilt into two areas, a quiet lounge and livelier bar. Ale-wise you get Courage Best, Bass, Otter Bitter and Doom Bar plus one guest.. Was recently served a less than great pint of Otter and was mentioning to my partner that it wasn't THAT great when the barman (LL?), when overhearing, asked if I wanted it changed, saying that it was due to being near the end of the barrel. The next one served up was tip top condition. The same chap seems to have a photographic memory when remembering who is next in line to be served AND remembers what you had been drinking when you return...and this in a pretty packed pub on a Sat night. I hand you... my nomination for best barman in Bristol 2010.

Been in here every two months or so in the last year and still worth a visit. Beer reasonably priced too.

Only recently started going here to meet friends on a Sunday evening. Nice, busy, friendly pub and the beers reasonably priced and kept well. Living in Brislington, its a fair way from where I live, but at least the No 1 bus stops outside!

Agree with TT about the inside needing a freshen up. Still a nice place for a drink with a mainly older crowd in on the night in question, service was excellent.

Went in on a Friday night for first time in ages, had a pint of beer from the newish brewery at Hambrook (Can't remember name sorry) and it was superb, real old style best bitter at it's very best and in great condition. Don't know if this is a permanent addition to the range but well worth a look in if it is as the rest are the usual easy to find dull beers ala Butcombe, Otter, yawn yawn ....

Good range of beers (Otter, several Bath Ales and guests). Rather staid but decent atmosphere. Interior could just do with some freshening up.

Strange how things change. I came across a local pub guide from (I am guessing) 1970s which said the POT was a rather raucous pub for the youngsters, while the parents were more likely to head down to the Foresters at the bottom of the road. Roles have been more or less reversed (and the Foresters is rather unpleasant as well as having a young demographic).

I am bound to say that since my last visits (back in 1997/'98), this pub seemed to lack a certain something on my recent re-acquaintance. The clientele remained largely the same in terms of socio-economic background (yes, older, yes, middle-class, but actually I prefer that to young chavs!), but the licensee (pleasant cove though he was) had taken away some of the elitism that used to prevail in years gone by - and perhaps that is a good thing. It was certainly a more down-toearth reception here than before. A soild, dependable local.
As for the ale, there were fewer to choose from than I remembered, and the choices were more ubiquitous, but the quality? It could not be doubted; those sampled were impeccable. The pizzas still looked fab as well so essentially, this place retains its worth, just with a slightly more pared-down, less smug, view of itself. Do visit.

Hahaha, loved that comment oldbore about the PoT's problem - so true! But maybe that's what add's to it's charm prehaps? No chance of getting knifed by some chav wearing a hoodie in here people. :-)

Been visiting the PoT @ WoT forover 20 years and though I probably prefer it in years gone by under previous regimes it still has many things going for it and the same thing it's always had really that makes it what it is. Good range of ales, very nice home made pizzas and a very nice calm atmosphere when compared to say rougher pubs a mere 1/4 of a mile away in WoT village. I have always liked this pub and happy to say that I still like it over 20+ years later in 2007 - all to rare to be able to say such things these day's.

This has a reasonably well segregated non smoking area, and the food is pretty good. However, if you want to have a pizza - very much the pub's unique selling point - it's worth checking ahead that they are actually serving that night.
The main problem with this place however is that it seems designed for and largely populated by the sort of people who met their life's partner back in 1965 when they were both in the Young Conservatives and whose main concern is that Inheritance Tax might be due on the house they bought for 15,000 in 1975.

I know people to rave about this pub and although the beers on offer are sound and the pizzas pretty damn good; to me its nothing more than a glorified local, certainly not worth the trek out of Bristol. If you are in the area or passing through why not go in and prove me wrong.
