Met up with friends for a meal and a chat.
Skate was overcooked and tasteless. Quantity of whole dish was very small and worth about half the price paid. Would have made a very decent starter though size wise but not taste wise.

Lovely looking country pub situated not too far from the busy A27. We arrived about 6pm to find the pub closed for the evening for a private function. I'm all for pubs hiring out a room for a function, but the whole pub? Very disappointing to travel down from London and find we couldn't get a beer here on a Saturday evening. We saw two other couples suffering the same frustration. I'm sure the party they had booked more than covered the revenue they lost from regular and passing custom. But all I can award this pub is a 0/10. Will try again one day, to see if this house will be open to the public.

I found this pub in the Good Pub Guide and met a friend here for Sunday lunch last weekend. The pub itself is lovely, characterfull and cosy with comfortable sofas and neat dining room plus a lovely terraced garden. The staff were very friendly and saw to our every need, we were served in good time and they were professional and relaxed. The food was delicious and it was difficult to choose between the tempting choice of dishes. We had three courses all of which were tasty and well thought out. We then wanted to take the dog for a country walk and approached the staff for advice. They went out of their way to help and suggested a fantastic walk around the nearby castle which was beautiful. We will be coming here again.

Lawhouse's review merely confirms what Sussex, Hastings and I have said in the 3 previous postings: it's a restaurant, and if you're not eating, they're not interested in you.

We booked a table for six for dinner on Saturday evening, pleasantly surprised when we arrived with the warm welcome and cosy lounge with luxurious leather settees. Interesting menu and specials board and excellent wine list, the latter somewhat pricey. The restaurant was atmospheric and the tables well presented although it was too hot and the lighting so dim it was hard to see.
First courses were a terrine of mackerel and crayfish, excellent, though could have been improved with some dressing on the accompanying salad, they could have missed the rather drab mayonnaise which was superfluous. A salad of bacon and goats cheese was superb. Good risotto and goats cheese tart.
Main courses cassoulet, lamb shank, pancake cannelloni and pork belly were all excellent.
Deserts were good and interesting.
All together an excellent dinner and evening some attention to detail would move it all up a notch. I do think the prices are a little over ambitious for a country pub.

Decided to drink here on a Saturday lunchtime, big mistake. This pub is really a restaurant. We were asked if we were eating when trying to find somewhere to sit, when we said we were just having a few drinks, we were herded to the back of the pub which was more like a scruffy living room where people were sitting whilst choosing their meals. Had the impression, perhaps I am being paranoid, that we were outcasts. Coffee took forever because they were busy concentrating on the food trade. I was drinking coffee because although they had a machine for mulled wine, they had no orange slices to put in it, sorry but mulled wine has orange in it!!!!! not lemons!!! When we suggested that next time we bring our own orange the barman agreed, well guess what, there won't be a next time.

I slipped away from a wedding reception at Windmill Hill Golf and Tennis Academy to visit this pub, I really shouldn't have bothered, overpriced wanabee gastropub that isn't up to scratch with the food or the ale, my complaint was met with "no-one else complains", I will not return.

I visited this place once, on a weekday lunchtime in Winter. The pub was moderately busy, with smart looking business types and 'ladies who lunch', all wanting to order their meals. I was neither smart nor a lady, and I just wanted a pint. I stood there for at least five minutes, and was totally ignored. No 'Sorry to keep you, be with you in a minute'. No nothing. So I left. For good.

Beautiful village location � lovely old pub with large restaurant area and, if you overindulge, there are plenty of lovely walks nearby. There�s a quirky layout in the older part of the pub, large dining area for proper dining, pretty (and quiet) beer garden out back for sunnier days. There�s an extensive wine list (with good selection by the glass) and several real ales available. Menu is impressive with ingredients locally sourced where possible. Fish is especially good.
The landlord Robert and other bar staff are friendly and helpful even when busy. Sunday lunchtime can be pretty busy. I like a weekday evening, either outside in the late evening sun, or in the winter tucked up by one of the log fires.

Cosy pub with log fires, friendly resident cat & dog. Helpful staff and tasty food. A lovely lamb shank with an accompanying glass (or three) sitting beside a real fire ... bliss!
