Dog and Gun Inn, Oxenhopeback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We arrived early Saturday evening and the pub was busy with a lot of tables reserved. The landlord (seemed a jolly chap) found us a table in the dining room which was reserved for 20:00 - giving us plenty of time to eat. First tip is to book if you want a meal at peak time. The TT Landlord beer was good - I'd noticed one or two comments about the beer in other reviews but I found it most acceptable. Food quality was good but I thought very expensive for the quality and quantity. I had the Steak and Ale pie - the pie was small and the plate included 7 chips for 11:95! Finally, if you are opposed to blood sports then don't visit during the autumn months as the pub is used as a base for local shoots.

Stayed here twice for the glorious 12th grouse shooting, great pub with an excellant selection of Timothy Taylors ales, great food, very friendly landlord and locals. I will be back for 12th August this summer, cant wait.

called in for a pint during a walk.around the stunning.area in which this pub is located. the bar staff were very friendly and polite , asking us if we were eating. shame then that we had a packed lunch cos the menu looked very intresting with a good choice for veggies, full range of timothy taylors beers, and this was my only let down the pint of tt bitter was not so good ..just passable.wish i had have a bit more time to try a few of the others cause sometimes its hard to judge by one drink..

Excellent beer and food. In the two years or so since I started to visit (roughly monthly), I've yet to be disappointed by either.
Certainly the place is busy with food trade in the restaurant areas, but it still manages to retain a proper pub atmosphere with locals at the bar. I don't feel out of place only taking a drink, which is by no means always the case at other pubs offering food.
Two coal fires and the complete range of Taylor's ales on pump complete an excellent spot. The only drawback is that it is a good 30 minutes' steep uphill walk from the railway station. However, there is a car park overlooked by the bar.

In my opinion one of the best country pubs in a 20 mile radius. Excellent beer and delicious food (large portions). Landlord is a real character and adds that extra 10% to make it special (although has probably upset a few people with his banter over the years). Recent extension and refurb has been done in a sensitive way so as not to destroy the character of the original (smaller) pub. Highly recommended.

I've been here twice. The licensee and his missis are young and friendly and I so want them to do well.
BUT, on each occasion I've been the beer has been cloudy, and SERVED to me cloudy. The last time I looked at it - it was opaque it was that bad - and looked at him, and he had the nerve to hold it up to the light!! No fuss about changing it, but it should never have been served (it was so by his missis).
Oh, and any pub I walk into where the landlord's on MY side of the bar reading the paper automatically loses points for sheer unprofessionalism.

Lots of pluses and some slight minuses with this place but I can understand the minuses. We were with our three year old and were ushered away from the main bar area, which you can eat in, presumably to keep the noise of a child away from those drinking at the bar. Can understand that, though. Taylor's suite of ales available and, although I hate the word, their 'branding' is spot on. A large portion of devilled, and pink (not for the squeamish), kidneys on fried bread for under a fiver was fantastic. Steak ordered medium came sub-rare and although rectified I feel there could have been more of an effort to compensate considering how wide of the mark it was initially. Still, better to be underdone than overdone. Chips are "fat chip shop style". Beer good, as was house white. Chatty landlord and (some) locals lend a nice atmosphere, although there were a few snobbier ones in. Eight out of ten, deserves to be moved from the little section of the good pub guide to the big section.

Remote, old coaching inn on near the top of the moor. Very welcoming and extremely well run. Real fires and great Taylor beer. Also popluar for food, but personally I'm not that much of a fan. Great place for a walk and a drink, though - and if it snows you might be there for days!
