what can one say!!!. This has to be the real local bar in Aldeburgh.food looked good, but the drinkers left a lot to be desired.Drunk up quick and left sharpish

Typical of Aldeburgh little choice and very expensive, not a lot more to say if people are willing to pay these prices when drinking away from home than so be it.

As a regular of DPs, who the F--k is Mrs Donkers.Sounds like some old bird who has moved to aldeburgh and wants to feel she,s a local.Would love to meet her, only if she,s sober.

This weekend to celebrate aldeburgh festival dp's had their own full day of music and what I saw it was great - diverse as you would expect, with irish fiddle de dee music, 15yr old great musician, and jazzy female on an organ. The place in unrecognisable, Mollys food is good - no I don't work for them but its such a great difference and its so much busier now which it well and truly deserves. Still serving different beers due to being a freehouse its different try it

Well the place is transformed, cleaner, smarter and now has the addition of mollys kitchen - selling local reasonably priced nosh. The clientele are far improved - in daylight hours in anycase, and although the spirit has changed it is really a far nicer place to go to now. They still have an eclectic taste in beers and ciders - which change as the months go by. The toilets which always required bravery and a poor sense of smell have been revamped and though the decor is an orignal taste (black) and the hallway leading reminiscent of entering the womb are clean and far better. The kitchen has been revamped.

DP's is currently under renovation - the whole outside has been painted white, the windows stripped of its accoutrements. The inside is going to be revamped and window seats with cushions put in, a new bar, a new floor.
It almost seems a shame that the spirit will be ripped out of this piece of living history, but in another it seems a long time coming, to attract the faint of heart into DP's unable to see past the dingy doorway. I'm interested to watch the improvements and a hopefully a few extra shekels going into eliza's pocket.

popped in, usual crowd, usual pleasant atmosphere on the whole. Interesting point to note - apparently jamiroquai popped in a couple of weeks ago after a minor spat with the chef in the brudenell

A great Boozer. Its an institution and a vital part of Aldeburgh life. The way its been recently modernised is great and having the Wi-fi is a real bonus too. I know the so called hippy couple who frequent the pub. They are very friendly. I've known them for many years. I've had many a good drinking session in there even midweek.

well went here a few weeks ago - on a friday night, it was very busy and in the back yard there was an impromptu jam with a flute, drum, ukelele(well something similar) and improvised beer keg. It was a great night

If you have visited Aldeburgh and not gone to DPs you have a missed a unique experience. With its fabled provenance of over 30 years, retro style punctuated with 21st exclamation of wifi (the only site in the area), the paradox of chapel chairs with their bible compartments, it offers the best range of aperitifs plus the necessities of Stella and Guinness. The music is superb - they have perfected the art of the playlist and should surely market to those ipod owners too lazy or incompetent to produce their own. The clientele is as diverse and interesting as you would ever wish to meet friendly and certainly not pretentious (how not Aldeburgh!). We stayed the night in a big comfy bed in a huge room with stunning double bay window views of the town and a glimpse of the sea. The dog was welcome, although the resident ginger cat may not have felt quite the same. Go there and soak up the atmosphere.

well here i am again - i should really stop writing as its always the same. The hippy couple here again - discovered the male half is a paperboy as spotted him one morning - yes im getting away from the point but seeing as they are a permanent fixture. The sixties music tonight is great, i have wifi here (only place in aldeburgh),Again i just can't stress the relaxed atmosphere here - almost the feel and look of a french bar/cafe. I still love it
|
in dps now - it is easter friday, its heaving and its a hoot - the usual crown are in the ageing hippy couple are here - their permanent haunt - the music is loud but talkable and the usual mix of old to young - i can't recommend it enough - its a great people watching bar

the first pub i found in Aldeburgh was DPs and afer the initial shock i settled in for a proper session of good old drinking, the staff and customers alike were a rare mixture of characters but were always friendly and refreshingly abrupt ,good laughs ,good music ,but not for the faint hearted.give it a try

Jesus wept, what a dive. Brutally unpleasant bar which seemed to be run by and for the local junkies. Staff and punters alike appeared desperate to live up to the streotype of the surly bumpkin proudly displaying a chipped shoulder to anyone without intimate knowledge of their immediate family. If Aldeburgh were a pleasant cotage garden David's Place would be a crapulous pool of vomit in the middle of the lawn, avoid.
|
ok so davids place has not been sold on as flats but is now owned by the same people who run the cabin(posh cafe in the high st) now providing free internet and wifi. Only wandered past since but am reliably informed by a regular that update of furniture is all thats changed - hoorah for dp's
|
Been going to Aldeburgh for 7 yrs and only popped in here last two years. David has indeed passed and his daughter is now running the joint. Rumour has it has been sold on to be a rental home. This really is a dive but there is something so retro and comfy about the whole place, it just keeps drawing you back. The crowd are as diverse as you can get - a drunk hippy middle age chick who smokes herself to death to the local youth of the place - all chatting and having a great time. In fact last year - at the aldeburgh festival phil et gil played impromptu outside the bar - says it all
|
aaawww no has David passed on? How sad. this was my favourite place in the burgh. I loved after hours when he served by torchlight - and when you went upstairs to use his own bathroom (I think)
|
Certainly agree with Mr Carter - It is a bar in a million unfortunately David had recently passed away which was the talk of the Definate eccentrics who were there we certainly did feel like we were in a front room and were given some quite puzzled looks as we went in a case of " who are you and how dare you come in!" Staff were friendly beer not too bad but not the best of the town.
|
This Pub/Bar really is one in a million. The landlord, David, 72, is a legend. As for all the other eccentrics who drink here.......well, it really does have to be experienced for one to fully understand. It's like drinking in somebody's front room in the 30's. A one off for sure.
