Closed again, and has been sold, rumours are that it is to be turned into a restaurant.

Back open again and it seems to be entering a price war with the Mardyke! Offering pints at 1.50 between 5 and 8, still dead though. What I don't understand is why would you want the customers from the Mardyke anyway?!?!

Closed once again. To say this place is cursed might be melodramatic, but why can't anyone make it work?

cannnot really add much here as ur last post says it all! All i can say is that doom and arbor ales hunny beer is a vast improvement on the dire visit 3years ago, sadly empty on a busy sat night everyone still spilling out the mardyke for some reason 5/10

This pub has had a bit of a chequered history recently, being closed and re-opened on numerous occasions, including one spell where it was shut for two years. So its good to see it finally re-open again, and hopefully this time it will be more successful.

Its a good size, single room bar, with a traditional, curved wooden bar counter on the right which includes some stained glass windows above the bar counter which is an unusual feature. At the back there is a raised area used for bands, and on the night we visited tribute band The Twurzels were due to play. There is also a regular jazz evening on Tuesdays. Next to the stage is an old piano, although whether this gets any use Im not sure.

The dcor is a little gloomy with a predominance of brown paintwork and brown curtains, although I understand there are plans afoot to change this. There are a few illuminated black and white photographs along one wall and a fruit machine next to the bar.

The landlady seemed friendly and was clearly trying to do her best to build business back up. After long spells of closure, inevitable regulars have all gone elsewhere. The two beers on tap were both from Arbor Ales with their Brigstow and Hunny Beer. Ciders were better represented with Thatchers Gold, Blackthorn and Thatchers Traditional dispensed directly from a barrel on the end of the bar.

Open with a new, young manager who apparently works for the proprietor of The Apple Tree cider house. The pub is very basic but traditional with real potential. A few nice pictures on the walls wouldnt go amiss but nonetheless it is an pleasant unpretentious local. On my visit on 27th Dec 2010 there were 2 Abor ales on (I drank the Honey beer which was good) and then left via the harbour path which is a pleasant walk if you are on a crawl towards the Nova Scotia, the Cottage & the Pump House.
6/10

Popped in on a friday after work as now re-opened... Tried the Arbor Ale - Nice.
Had good chinwag with landlady, then Music started - Daz, not seen before but had great night. Unexpected but will definitely return.

Visited here only about a week after it opened . 3 pumps none of them worked . one was marked up for sharps doombar , hip hip . settled for keg cider which was awlful . steerless and unimaginative , would make the mardyke look like a candidate for the gbg , give this a miss.

After a while ,when nothing appeared to be happening , a new sign has now sprung up "pub lease for sale at reduced price"

used to go in the merchant's alot and followed cyril up to the plume , pity him ,and mark appeared to fall out in the early days , carried on drinking in there afterwards with mark, but whilst it was busy some nights , had some very lonely nights in there as well , when it was sometimes just me , and the bar man /maid ,still hats off to mark ,and cyril , at least they had a stab at it,cyril I understand is now finished at the mayors ,as it has closed again , haven't seen mark for a while, it looks as if the plume is now finally finished as a pub.shame

I used to work in The Plume while i was at uni, Cyril was such a lovely man, i know he left to work at another pub, but has Mark left too?! What a shame it has such a low rating as i always thought the place had a lot of character and the locals were great! I had my first beer festival experience there and i shall never forget it! :-) Im going to rate this pub as to when i was last there!

What a shame it has turned into such a dump, was great only just a few years ago when Mark & Cyril were running the place and the beer back then was superb but with good old Cyril behind the bar it would be.

BTW, does anybody know if Cyril is still running the Mayors Arms these day's? Not seen him for a few years now.

Only Guinness & Stella on draught, 3 handpumps with nothing on at all. Opted for a guinness which turned out to be one of the worst i have ever tasted, 2/10

Now re-opened, is it linked to the new Italian next door? Good choice of drinks and live music planned. Seems promising!
