Port Of Call, Cliftonback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
On the suggestion of a local we rolled into this pub post-football for a couple of hours on a Friday evening. There was only one ale remaining on, though it was in top condition, however the evening was made by the brilliantly entertaining landlord and his staff who were great fun. This place is a little gem and the sort of local everyone should have.

Great beer, Roger is a fantastic landlord, friendly customers and some great homemade grub. Everything about this pub is spot on.
Yes it's a little more expensive drinks wise than some of the other pubs in the locality (as some of you have pointed out), but I don't mind paying extra for a decent beer in nice, clean, friendly surroundings.
Also, there's always a beer on offer at 2.50 so something for everyone.
Top marks.

Really nice place with very friendly landlord which does make all the difference to any pub, quality food, very nice atmosphere and the decor is exactly how a pub should be!

Really friendly barman - excellent customer service, and really improved from previous visits. There are usually more than the four ales that were on last night but the pint quaffed of Cornish Coaster could not be improved upon, really nice pickled eggs as well. Will return again soon.

Is Rog still the landlord? what a man.
great pub, if they still do the fish finger sandwiches, you can't go far wrong.

Paid a recent visit to see if things had changed for the better re: Pricing structure. But alas no!
2.90 a pint for any beer over the strength 4.2 (2.75 for the weaker ones too!) is a right liberty! (No matter how nice the pub is or well the beer kept btw!)
How is it the weekend before my visit I am drinking in Parsons Green, London and paying 2.40 a pint in a very expensive London area yet have to pay 50p a pint more in my home town of Bristol? The pricing at the Port is BANG out of order and the sooner the Bristol CAMRA branch acknowledge this the better, I mean how expensive does a pint of beer have to be before it is excluded from The Good Beer guide on principle alone? Such a shame as it's such a nice pub.

This hidden gem was well worth the effort we spent trying to find it. I also am a member of camra and whilst i commend them for all they've done fighting for the traditional values of the best pubs in the world, i must say that they have become a very pompous lot. they go around deciding on which pubs should be in their guide and, if the landlord is'nt favourable to them there's a fair chance the pub won't get recommended for the guide. At the end of the day it's the landlord not camra who decide on what they want their pub to be and the success or failure of the business will be down to them. Maybe if more of these so called "experts" put their money where their mouths are they might be a little more understanding. This is a great pub so go and pay it a visit.

I rarely used to get here in the mid '90s whilst an undergraduate at Bristol, although when I did it was always good. However, recent visits have amply demonstrated that it is even better now, with a superb and well-kept range of ales, good food (by the look of it anyway), and a lively buzz created very organically by a mixed bunch of locals, students, young and old, all wallowing in the sheer heaven of a traditional local pub that is the ultimate antithesis to the ghastly pseudo-glamour of the corporatised Whiteladies "Strip". The Port is tucked just far enough away from that maelstrom of mediocrity, and I am encouraged by the loyal following it seems to have accrued. Clearly the licensee has the right idea. That said, I am bound to agree that there are many who would balk at the pricing strategy here. And moreover, I worry that perhaps this can come across to the uninitiated as something fo a snooty venue. Placing notices on the front door saying only CamRA members and regulars are allowed in is a bit strong, even though ingress can be achieved via the rear for those in the know. I am a member of CamRA, and am keen that people who won't appreciate what pubs like this have to offer don't waste bar space! But I think the tack of closing off the front entrance might be a bit much? Maybe it's changed now since I last visited. Nevertheless, a superb pub that has really come on, so well done.

Great pub, great beer, great food, great landlord.
So what possibly can be wrong then?
The price of beer! Way too expensive, nearly 3 a pint is taking the wee wee I'm afraid so stopped going there despite it being one of the best pubs in Bristol. Rip-Off Britain is bad enough as it is without beer prices on this scale, no matter how good the beer is!

Great pub with lots of character, decent food and fantastic beer. Come for the drink and the chat, but not the decor.
|
This is one of the best pubs in Bristol.
No juke box and no gaming machines!
Roger the landlord is always ready for a chat.

Excellent beer, garden out back. Recently joint winner of Best West Country Pub (or something like that - ask Roger, the landlord - he'll tell you all about it!).
