we called in on tuesday 27/03/2011 ordered 2 x HALVES orange & soda water was charged 3.08p.I queried the cost at the time. How is this price justified? A week later we called in at the black bull a minute up the road and was only charged 75p for a PINT a staggering difference of 2.33. for mainly water.

Lovely cozy pub with a log fire, welcoming staff and good freshly prepared food. Good for locals and visitors alike.
Nice pub, good beer and food. It is a shame however, that the food is accompanied with the hedge-wedge 'Rocket' salad that was popular in the 1990s.
This place looked very inviting from the outside, and it's in a great location with rolling moorland just over the top of the hill. I was expecting a real old fashioned interior. Unfortunately, I was presented with a featureless modern interior and a pub that is now clearly aimed at diners. Two real ales were on - Holt Mild and McMullens Cask Ale. It's such a shame that people feel the need to ruin pubs such as this.

Called yesterday for a drink, not impressed with the new decor, that paint job is dreadful. The food has rocketed up in price - steak pie 8.70, soup 3.75, chips 2.45 - crazy from what they used to charge before Christmas.

Oh dear, who is responsible for the make over, this lovely old pub that was full of character has now been turned into err not sure what its meant to be! The decor is far to contemporary and the battleship grey paint that they must have bought as a job lot makes the place feel very cold, however on our weekly visit it was busier, but was that just out of curiosity time will tell. The pub always had a lovely cosy feel, which has now gone, very sad.

Wonderful pub, wont be here for much longer if nobody uses it tho. Pity the fires werent on New Years Eve, and dont think much to the television in the bar area. Thats what we want to get away from. Lovely child free bar area. But for how long!

looking a bit run down a decent pint of holts bitter non the less such a shame because it has great potential looks like it could do with a makeover didnt try the food so cant comment but ther was only one group eating and it was 3pm on sunday afternoon so that should say something
love this pub for my first friday night pint of the week, very cosy and not full of noisy children, just like a pub should be.
Always enjoyed this pub over the years but on our last visit for Sunday lunch found all the decent tables were reserved - this is a pub not some high class city centre restaurant - we were forced to sit at a less comfortable table and served by someone who had obviously had a personality by-pass. Will try again soon - but only once if still no better.

This pub as lost its friendly atomsphere.Food not what it was.Staff had the personality of a card board box.Not what it was when the Pilkington family ran the place.A shame:-(
Although we arrived late for lunch, a good selection was available, good food, cheerful service and some nice cool Guinness were very welcome.
Really disappointed with a recent visit. We last had food/drink here in approx 1998 & remember a cosy atmosphere & good, simple food. This time we sat in a dodgy restaurant-y part & the food was less that average. It's such a shame as it's a good stopping off point for Rivington/Winter Hill walks.

If you like Holts and need a family friendly pub by the moors, this pub fits the bill. There is a substantial menu of standard pub food. Try the range of bottled Holts beers if the bitter seems dull.
Very good pub serving home made food, Holts beers. Not quite as good as it was in the days of landlord Jim Pilkington, but still well worth a visit.
