please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Think the bad comments for this pub need to be cleared up so..
I work in the pubs kitchen and I know exactly what goes into the food, no processed meat. As for the 'buckets of slop' those are actually potatoes being carried down into cellar. As for the bad comments about the landlord and landlady, you can only get an idea about them if you actually speak to them and FYI, they are actually very nice and great hosts.
Also about it being a doctors waiting room, the crown is one of the only pubs in horwich were it does not kick of, making it a nice pub to be. Go to any other pubs in horwich and I guarantee somebody will cause trouble.
Just because all you complainers have been in the crown once, doesnt give you the right to complain. All stuck up if you ask me :)

Called in earlier this evening and the beer was on top notch, ended up in a group discussion about the local puds and beer of our yesterdays.
Excellent evening
Mistlethrush - 1 Jun 2013 01:15
Quality beer, couldn't fault the place.
Mistlethrush - 27 May 2013 11:52
Great pub and excellent beer.
steviej - 22 May 2013 09:03
Still a good traditional pub, due for a refurbishment/redecorration.
Redwing - 23 Apr 2013 19:06
Popped in for a quick pint and delighted to note that Directors and Spitfire were on offer. Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!
yamato - 4 Nov 2012 11:24
This is a good traditional Victorian pub with very good beer. I've never had a problem with it.
Redwing - 5 Dec 2011 20:33
I agree with Yamato, somebody seems to be running a vendetta against the management of the the Crown, I'm happy to go in any time.
inspectorblakey - 17 Nov 2011 10:03
Interesting, but generally illiterate comments from Funkygirl30, Kez23 and Dogma321. Whilst my previous postings reveal that I can in no way be considered a supporter of the management of this pub, the bile spewed out by this gruesome threesome seems rather over the top.
yamato - 3 Nov 2011 20:13
I will advise all my friends and family never to go in this pub theyd rather let in peadophiles and employ family members and take money in for a kitchen they are not legally supposed to have up and running than deal with real life real down to earth people the landlady is a horrible person who i hope never to set eyes on ever again!
Funkygirl30 - 17 Oct 2011 22:22
I used to work in this pub until they barred my partner and took out their resentment towards my partner out on me while i was heavily pregnant. I recently went it in with the hope new landlord had taken over but found my ex boss to be extremely rude aggressive and was more interested in herself than resolving matters like an adult she is supposed to be and she wonders why people dont go bk working for her. Very childish landlady to b perfectly honest a dose of reality check is whats needed here. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND!!!!!!!
Funkygirl30 - 17 Oct 2011 22:17
this pub is awful.u only get served dependin on ur apperance the owner bev is so rude n does not know how to treat customers she was so rude to me i will neva go this pub again
kez23 - 17 Oct 2011 01:13
this is the worst pub in the world landlady and landlord are the worst host in the world only couple i know who use the same hair dye the terrible hosting skills and the pub smells like an old ppls home the beer is bad the beer glasses smell or it cud ov been the landladies breath
dogma321 - 16 Oct 2011 22:20
Gets a lot of criticism for just being a straightforward traditional pub where you don't have to shout to get over the music and there isn't Sky TV coming at you from all angles. Why?
Redwing - 12 Sep 2011 20:02
Does the landlord still go down the cellar at the end of every evening with stainless steel buckets full of the slops?
I wonder what he is doing with them?
boltonbloke - 6 Aug 2011 17:05
The best Holts pub for miles around and a place where you are always made welcome.
handsofconcrete - 24 Apr 2011 21:08
Went into the Crown the other day for Lunch, noticed they had a 5 rating from the Food Standards Agency, so doopyyoung1 obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. The food was excellent.
ronson - 10 Feb 2011 12:13
This is the best pub in Horwich. It is a safe welcome pub with excellent beer that has been in the Good Beer Guide for the last 12 consecutive years. The landlord and landlady are first class managers and personally contribute to the community in charitable capacities.
PRG - 6 Jan 2011 19:46
not bad for the only gay in the village, but had a better pint of holts in the albert.
Not right for a holts managed house, atmosphere good for cocoon 4 .
rivingtonrogue - 1 Nov 2010 19:47
This pub is ok if your just going in a qwick pint, i agree partly with rushyboy123 although not seen any violence not been in for about 12 months at a weekend diffrent bar staff now bit better not looking more at there phones then serving and bit frendly, but the landlady does think she is it and she is like barstaff they are only managers they don't own the pub,
stevesmith1 - 29 Aug 2010 11:58
I see rushyboy123 has only posted one review, the pub he describes is not the Crown I know, i think somebody or something has upset him.
inspectorblakey - 6 Aug 2010 20:01
I have had quite a few negative things to say about the beer in this pub in the past. However, since I sampled the excellent Holt's Mild, I am a reformed character. Outstanding, would not be out of place in the New Oxford in Salford or the Witchwood in Ashton -under-Lyne.
yamato - 3 Mar 2010 19:04
As Holts pubs go, this is about the best around. Fine bitter, mild and guest. Always friendly and cosy despite the size of the place.
handsofconcrete - 19 Feb 2010 00:16
same as usual generally trouble free pub if you can get served even when quiet some people really need to leave there phones alone. some things never change.
red1 - 5 Sep 2009 10:13
Marked improvement in the beer with the latest offering 'Summer Time'.
yamato - 23 Jun 2009 05:01
This is the Best Pub in Horwich, I have tried other pubs, but still go back to the Crown. The Beer is Excellent as you can tell from 10 Years in the Good Beer Guide. Food is as you would expect for pub grub, good food at good prices.
Friendly Staff and Excellent Management. Its a Credit to Joseph Holts.
ronson - 13 May 2009 12:53
Can't seem to get the taste of Holt's beer but this trouble free pub is a credit to its landlord
chicory - 6 May 2009 19:46
having read the last comment it eems to me someone was having a bad day. i have been a regular at this pub for a number of years both for food and just a pint and a game of pool. i have had both the home made meat and potato pie and the steak and ale pie and both have been very well done indeed, ok never going to be cordon bleau but what do people want for between 4 and 5. this is a nice place to just relax with friends have a cheap meal and still b able to hear a conversation without thumping music. if thats what you want head to town.
red1 - 4 May 2009 10:24
My friend and I called here today and decided to have lunch. The big mistake on my part was opting for the home made meat and potato pie. It was the thinnest pie I have ever seen and any meat was cleverly disguised as something else, maybe the sliver of carrot or the flake of onion I spotted hiding in the crumbly mash. Fortunately the portion given was very small so I did not need to spend a lot of time eating it .The gravy was thin and not very sipid so I left most of the meal uneaten.
On the upside my partner enjoyed her baked potato and beans.
The Holts bitter was pleasant enough and my complaint was handled well by the waitress who said sorry but she had not made the pie as she beat a hasty retreat to the kitchen.
I may return to drink the beer but I'm afraid eating here again is a no no.

tharrow - 12 Apr 2009 19:17
This is just a straightforward and very traditional Victorian pub aimed at people who want to be able to talk to each other without having to shout over loud music. It does what it does very well. I can't see why people have a problem with it.
Redwing - 7 Dec 2008 18:32
Honestly, why?
Pfft - 22 Oct 2008 13:59
I stand by my comments. Not the worst pub in Horwich when it comes to beer but bl**dy close! As for CAMRA, they do not always get it right.
yamato - 20 Oct 2008 21:21

"Nasty chilled bitter, not a haven for the serious beer drinker. Might appeal more to those who don't wish to spend 1.50 on a pint. However, you know the old saying,'you get what you pay for'. At the Crown you certainly get what you pay for, no more, no less" - Yamato.

Those lads from CAMRA obviously don't know what they are on about then?
Pfft - 10 Oct 2008 13:13
Was not impressed with the service in this pub, two young members of staff on who both ignored paying customers to finish personal conversations with friends.
won't be bothering with this place again, I know were I'm not wanted!
boltonbloke - 8 Aug 2008 13:03
Lovely Holts bitter in the Crown, Yamato seems a bit biased.
I've been in on a Sunday, the organ music's not to my taste but lots of people enjoy it, I've never known it to compete with the piped 'musak', never noticed there was any.
inspectorblakey - 23 Jul 2008 23:50

yamato - 22 Jul 2008 22:32
A 1970s Butlins party atmosphere on Sunday evenings. No doubt has its appeal to some. The problem is the music competes with the piped 'musak' and the telivised sport creating an assault on the senses. Please just give us one or the other, not all three!
Beer still decidedly average.
yamato - 6 Jul 2008 23:45
Too old for my tastes but Gary set out to create a trouble free pub for the older end of the market that would be idiot free and he succeeded.
That was over ten years ago now which is testement to both his pub and his beer
jamesrockford - 28 Jun 2008 20:26
Fulfils a definite need. A proper traditional Victorian town boozer - was built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company to cater for the upsurge in residents of Horwich when they built their loco works there in the 1880's. A pub to go to if you want to talk to your drinking partner(s) and be heard, we go there in between visits to the louder pubs in town. Pubs don't exist just for the under 30's as some reviewers seem to think..If you want somewhere loud and brash there are plenty of other options to go to in Horwich. The Crown does what it does very well.
Redwing - 22 Apr 2008 22:34
First Class Pub
ronson - 31 Jan 2008 12:04
Whoever left the last comment obviously doesnt really know the Pub. This is one of the best pubs in Horwich, with excellent beer and atmosphere especially on Sunday Evenings when their is an Artiste on.
ronson - 31 Jan 2008 12:01
A vast mausoleum containing the nearly/soon to be dead. An atmosphere like a doctors waiting room is
not improved by mine host, evidently the most miserable man in Horwich. Bar staff come and go, due
to overwork I should imagine as rarely does Bev get off her substantial backside to help out. Not the worst pub in Horwich, there are plenty of other contenders for that title, but somewhere you go because there is nowhere else. Only thing in its favour is the low chav/gobshite count.
yamato - 15 Dec 2007 18:36
Nothing wrong with Gary or is pub!
inspectorblakey - 28 May 2007 20:05
I think the Crown is a great pub. The beer is always kept perfectly - as you'd expect from a pub with so many years in the good beer guide. The staff are excellent - friendly, efficient, and attractive - especially that young man with a beard! good Landlord and lady as well - people have posted that Gary is grumpy, but they just have him misunderstood, I'd describe him as cantankerous, grouchy, and snappy. But certainly not grumpy!
ega06tsshef - 22 May 2007 00:20
Good pleasant pub. Good beer, good prices. Gary and Bev are good hosts. Oh and the bar staff - they are always good, attentive and smiling not forgetting etc. (They said) and it's probably true.
royg - 14 Sep 2006 22:21
Consistent. Slightly out of character with the "singalong 'round the piano" image from the Sunday sessions, the quiet background music at other times in the week is often Motown and Northern Soul!
anonymous - 30 Aug 2006 16:17
a nice pub, it's one where you talk if you want too and don't if you don't always a good pint and nice older client's
anonymous - 6 Aug 2006 23:21
Very pleasant atmosphere last time I visited, a Sunday night, very busy.
Customers were a very mixed bunch, some there to listen to the organist others in for a quiet drink and chat, the pub is big enough and the music volume kept low enough to accomodate everybody.
I don't know who the organist is, but is choice of music is fascinating, though he sometimes forgets what he's playing part way through.
(And the Holt's bitter is great!)
inspectorblakey - 21 Jul 2006 09:57
Not a bad pub in itself, pleasant surroundings and customers. The food is decent and always fresh.

The landlord and landlady, now, he rarely smiles, she is not too bad, and all he can do is moan about one thing or another. Never has a good word to say about anyone.
wrongsideofthebar - 26 May 2006 18:21
Odd place, it does not seem finished off to me, as if something is missing. Beer prices are good, company varies.
chufferd - 15 May 2006 16:26
Nice, spacious pub if you're happy with an older clientele. Decent beer and decor. Good prices. Not exactly the most buzzing pub in Horwich, but then again it's not aimed at that market.
Syl - 28 Mar 2006 13:46
I like this pub. Big, open and very Victorian with excellent beer. Background music kept quiet so it's one to go in if you want to talk to each other without having to shout. Old folks singalong on Sunday night with camp and toothless organist at which you can set your watch by who is singing what and when.
Rivington - 27 Mar 2006 17:02
Good beer and a well kept pub that seems to cater for the older end of the market. Just don't expect a smile from Gary, the miserable landlord.
anonymous - 27 Mar 2006 12:45
Rather large open plan pub with not much atmosphere, one plus is the beer is very cheap and strong!
anonymous - 7 Jan 2006 17:52
