please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Hmmmmm, empty pub apart from 3 women gossiping in the hallway. and one man glued to its iphone, I waited for about 5 seconds and left. Pity and a bit odd, I normally like this pub, will try once more soon.

Looking for a lunchtime boozer that had the football on - and this ticked the boxes.

The Butcombe was superb. Best I've had.

Decent lunch.

Interesting collection of regulars and tourists.

Recommended.

Still definitely one of the better pubs, both good for sitting inside and outside, and the prices are as good as possible here. Both excellent landlady and young manager guy.
psychicyclist - 23 Oct 2014 07:27
Great music, friendly staff and all in all a good place to go out for a drink.
somersetgirl - 5 Oct 2014 19:43
Great pub with a really friendly staff and landlady. Cats, too! saw a good band there as well. Beer is good and reasonably proced. Well worth a visit.

There was an old man from Caerphilly
Who went for a pint in the Billy
He asked for a firkin
of mouldy old gherkin
and the barmaid said "dont be so silly".

Three of us had Christmas Day lunch here, and I kid you not, it was the best meal out I have ever experienced. I have eaten here many times, but this was absolutely phenomenally wonderful.
Everything was as near perfect as is possible.
I congratulate all involved in the production and service of this very special meal.
(The beer was very good too!)
The_Heavy_Fandango - 29 Dec 2012 21:23
Great little pub right in the town centre. Does a roaring food trade with a Sunday Carvery and good real ales. The food is consistently good and reasonably priced.

As mentioned by someone else the Guinness is indeed a bit pricey but nonetheless worth a night out.

They have mostly good bands on Saturday nights, playing Blues, Blues/Rock and occasionally other styles too. Some of the bands are spectacular for pub bands.
Gets a little cramped when it's a busy night but the staff are pretty quick at getting everyone served.

The have a pool table, skittle alley and a nice little beer garden (south west facing which is great).

Hey It's Heavy Malcom again !
Arbitarily_down_the_pan - 18 Aug 2011 12:04
Good food, but Guinness a bit pricey.
The_Heavy_Fandango - 12 Aug 2011 16:55
I like this place.
ReInnCarnation - 11 Jul 2011 16:24
Sat outside with friends for a few hours. Great beer. Fine cabaret. Good grub. Ace.
Fine_Ale_Arbiter - 3 Jul 2011 22:21
Butcombe was in fine fettle today, and watching the local populace going about their ambulatory business was quite entertaining.
Fine_Ale_Arbiter - 7 Jun 2011 23:26
Today I had a pint of Gem, and then switched to Butcombe. Nothing wrong with the Gem, but I thought I'd try both.
I prefer Butcombe, but they were both in very good fettle.
Grand_Mufti - 31 May 2011 15:50
I think you'll find that he was not failed, but diversified, then later retired, after several years of business success!
Don't judge people by your own miserable standards please.
The beer is still good here, but I wouldn't expect you to know about that.
Fine_Ale_Arbiter - 30 May 2011 13:27
Its seems that the final arrbiter has found a good pub after slaggining off all others, Could it be that this failed ex landlord has found a new job ? His previous failures hasa now come to an end. The fine arbiter has now found a home. I wonder if he is connected to the new pub ?
GodLover1321 - 26 May 2011 22:11
Seems to me there are several impersonators on here.
The beer is good, as is the food and service. There are some interlopers though, or are they just virtual boozers?
Fine_Ale_Arbiter - 15 May 2011 12:02
What a great day for great beer, and FRESH AIR !

Arbitarily_down_the_pan - 17 Apr 2011 11:34
Yep, this pub is definitely OK, better than ever !
Arbitarily_down_the_pan - 17 Apr 2011 07:44
Well good thanks. I can breathe
Arbitarily_down_the_pan - 16 Apr 2011 23:44
You can't keep a sneering, slanderous, interfering, red neck, racist, redneck chimpanzee down.
Final_Arbiter - 16 Apr 2011 12:37
Dr_Pangloss and I had a wonderful mass debate. I need someone else now.
Final_Arbiter - 16 Apr 2011 12:34
Haven't been out much on Sundays recently, but a son suggested that he treat his mother and her sister and myself to lunch for Mothering Sunday. OK, I'm happy with that, as I know it's a good Sunday roast, so we all turn up at the appointed time, and order drinks.
Excellent pint of Butcombe (I could have had Gem), and we ordered our meals, but I was was amazed that there were several vegetables available, and I recall saying some time last year that I was not a fan of parsnips, and lo and behold; everybody else had parsnips except me!
That's what I call customer service! (I'm sure I heard Jimmy tell the serving wench that "that plate is for that gentleman".
"Gentleman? Moi?
All in all, a good day out, and even my lively grandson was tolerated (not by me, you understand, but by the management, staff and customers).
I continued with the Butcombe until full.
The_Final_Arbiter - 4 Apr 2011 00:26
True.

Yesterday I stayed within, but not for long.
The_Final_Arbiter - 31 Mar 2011 09:36
Still too cold for eejit watching...
hoonkerama - 31 Mar 2011 09:01
I'll join you soon.....I agree with you re- the eejits. I think we'll agree (for once) that the eejits generally don't come from the King William so much as the Backpackers and the monument.....
hoonkerama - 12 Mar 2011 16:29
Popped in for a couple after shuffling round to the bank/post office/butcher etc.
When most pubs are quiet in the afternoons, this is still buzzing.
Excellent pint of Butcombe, and my wife had the Guinness, also in fine nick. Can't wait folr decent weather, so we can sit outside and watch the eejits.
The_Final_Arbiter - 12 Mar 2011 13:24
When I read the review by martadick below, I felt the urge to go to check if this pub had moved, but I need not have worried.
"Street corner"?
Hardly. It's right in the Market Place.
The beer is spot on, and the number of people eating here tells you all you need to know about the food, although trade is somewhat sporadic at this time of year.
Still the best pub around.
The_Final_Arbiter - 18 Oct 2010 13:24
Basic street corner local with decent beer (Butcombe Gold & Bitter) and very friendly barmaid. Very family-friendly judging by the clientele but definitely no frills ! Skittle alley out back although not being used when we were there. Also seems to have regular music although we had to leave before it started !
martaddick - 3 Oct 2010 16:33
Quite a nice pub in the town centre. The steak was excellent and the Butcombe Ale was well kept. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was a bit jovial. The interior looked a bit drab but that's only a minor gripe and would've liked to have tried the pool table.

8/10.
wezmiester - 22 Jul 2010 17:29
The best pub in town. Caroline is a lovely landlady & her staff are always polite & helpful, fantastic music played behind the bar, nice regular customers, lovely atmosphere, a gorgeous back garden & child & dog friendly.
glastogurl - 20 Jul 2010 20:14
I feel really quite dissapointed with todays pubs. This one is about the best I've been in so far.
psychicyclist - 26 May 2010 13:19
Well, consistent quality pays off, it seems.
I wandered in here today and, expecting to see a few tables in use for diners, had been prepared to sit at the bar, as the carvery and other menus are available from 1200 to 1430. When I entered it was 1310, and the A-board advertising the carvery was just being removed from the front of the pub, as they had sold out.
Word has been passed around, and this place continues to thrive.
There are other places to eat in Glastonbury, but this seems the most popular. I contented myself with several pints of the excellent Butcombe, as should you if you're too late for the solids. If, however, you're an early bird, try the carvery.
You won't find any better locally.
The_Final_Arbiter - 9 May 2010 19:21
The couple from the Mitre were in there this evening, having already visited the George & Pilgrim. Is this market research, or some other lazy pursuit?
The_Final_Arbiter - 17 Oct 2009 00:45
I like it, and I notice that the blokie from the Mitre does too.
Grand_Mufti - 15 Oct 2009 02:37
Surprised to see there's no mention of the Cask Marque award.
The Cask Marque website shows the Billy, and they've been CM accredited for two years. (Or do they have to pay to show that?)
The_Final_Arbiter - 13 Oct 2009 12:16
A very nice afternoon pint enjoyed sitting out watching the people come and go.Quiet, but it was half 4.I looked across towards the Crown, and i was glad of my choice.
Menu looked good too.
Seemed to change character at night, when i was looking over from the Crown.Bad choice.A few locals enjoying a bloody awful metal covers band.
Would enjoy another lunchtime session with no complaints.
toolster - 6 Oct 2009 21:31
Inspired by previous reviews, I paid this pub a return visit while in town for an hour. Certainly seems to be greatly improved since the change of licensee. Butcombe and Butcombe Blond were on, so 2 Somerset beers - can't be bad. Food specials seemed to be good value, and not what you'd expect in a pub. Will revisit, and will dine next time. Not difficult to see why the surrounding pubs are struggling.
beerpilgrim - 22 Sep 2009 18:19
I was going to add a comment after our visit today, but there's no point.
If they have any more people going in this place, there'll be no room for me!
Don't just think about it, go there.
Today was packed out, and although there are more choices on the carvery menu, they're still selling out.
Book a meal or get there early!
Currently, Butcombe and London Pride on offer.
Go on! You know you want to.
The_Final_Arbiter - 30 Aug 2009 21:28
Crikey! Busy or what? Went for beer today with the Memsahib, and the place was packed with drinkers and diners (mostly availing themselves of the excellent carvery).
We were intending to have Butcombe, but as it was in the process of being changed, we opted for Guinness, and we had to wait until a table outside at the front of the pub became vacant (a good place to sit and witness the weirdness). No matter. I'll have Butcombe next time.
The_Final_Arbiter - 2 Aug 2009 23:42
"Yeah Mr. Final Arbiter, cautiously, I just about agree with you, but the "land lord" or whatever he is can be a bit off every now and then, like he's one can short of something....."

Methinks you have mistaken a former member of staff for the "landlord", as you may not have noticed that this place has a LANDLADY!
Her partner is not as you describe, but an OK bloke.
If you are going to be critical, you must be accurate!
The_Final_Arbiter - 28 Jul 2009 00:38
Yeah Mr. Final Arbiter, cautiously, I just about agree with you, but the "land lord" or whatever he is can be a bit off every now and then, like he's one can short of something.....
whatsgoingon - 6 Jul 2009 16:48
As a change from the roast beef (last week) we had roast pork, and it was just as good as the beef. Nice change with one of the vegetables being sweet potato. Have a beer, have a meal, then witness the weirdness passing by.
The_Final_Arbiter - 5 Jul 2009 23:48
Lovely roast lunch here yesterday. Nice pint of Butcombe, and several gins.
The_Final_Arbiter - 29 Jun 2009 09:12
Blimey!
This is certainly the place to go for grub in a pub in Glastonbury!
Yesterday, packed to the gunnels.
Today, bloody heaving with people eating, and they ran out of some stuff on the popular carvery.
Going well.
The_Final_Arbiter - 21 Jun 2009 20:39
Went in there today, and I was amazed by the number of punters dining in there.
Word's getting around!
The_Final_Arbiter - 14 Jun 2009 20:52
Popped in for a snifter this evening, and noted that they now host poker.
(Currently Tuesdays, but MAY change to Monday. Watch this space.)
The_Final_Arbiter - 2 Jun 2009 23:04
Quite a following for the music, apparently, but not too many for the films. In fact, if you're in there with no-one to talk to, ask the landlady, and she may well offer a selection of feature films for you to watch.
Mention my name (if you know it)

The_Final_Arbiter - 2 Jun 2009 02:15
This pub recently obtained a licence to show movies (That's films to you, grandad). Thursdays at 8PM and Sundays at 5PM, they're showing popular bigscreen movies FREE!
The_Final_Arbiter - 20 Nov 2008 23:36
Interesting food. Realistic prices. Try it. You'll like it!
The_Final_Arbiter - 17 Oct 2008 00:04
Good pub. Right in the Market Place. Two real ales last time I was there. Landlady has a nice arse.
The_Final_Arbiter - 28 Jun 2008 13:01
Mostly lager, some cider. One local beer.

Has a large skittles alley, and is well placed in the centre of town. Looks to have live music on Saturday night's.

Friendly staff. Piped music was soul music.

Not a bad pub.
