Nice old thatched pub, cosy interior and a nice sunny garden. All the beers were just fine, and a good choice too. It's just of the bottom of the notorious Porlock Hill, so you can sit in the garden and breath in the fumes from over heated brakes and burnt out clutches. Accommodation is available for those who want to stay, and menu look pretty good.

Stunning multi roomed C13th thatched pub.
Food is simple but well done and keenly priced.
Lovely little bar area for the drinkers. Five real ales on - Tribute, Otter Amber and Dark, Exmoor Ales and Beast. The beast made me laugh - 6.6% and if you order it, they disappear into the cellar for collection. Presumably its no allowed out with the others.
Throw in the wonderful log burners and you have my definition of a great pub.

Popped in earlier this week for a drink, good range of ales, lovely wood burner going and friendly locals. The landlady seemed really nice and there was a good atmosphere, top marks from me !

We went in a couple of times over the weekend and enjoyed our visits. About 6 good ales on offer including Proper Job, Exmoor's Ale & Beast and Wills Neck. The pub was busy both nights but our food was served quickly enough although the English veal was too overcooked which was disappointing. A better pub than the Royal Oak.

Visited on a wintery saturday, the place was quite empty apart from a couple of people at the bar and the whole feeling wasn't that friendly. Good beer though and a pleasent enough pub. We headed off after a pint and ended up at their sister pub the Bottom Ship at Porlock Weir, a more friendly pub I've yet to find. All in the timeing I suppose.

Yes this is a very cosy olde worldy pub indeed. Although i was dissapointed that they closed every afternoon even in the summer months.
8/10

Had a recent stay in Porlock & used The Ship a few nights running, good food & superb selection of ales, staff & locals friendly, will visit again in the future.

The Ship is the best pub in Porlock. have just returned from Porlock after 7 nights; ate at The Ship on 4 nights; food very good quality and the real ale, particularly St. Austell's 'Proper Job' was excellent. Staff also very friendly and efficient. Went to the Friday night quiz.....first class !

Lovely pub in a lovely village. Very cosy, great selection of beers, we had Proper job, one of about eight ales on offer. Only had time to stay for half an hour, will without doubt return....

Very very good ale pub, great selection of interesting beer, all that I tried were well kept.
Visited on a rainy Friday in June and really enjoyed sitting there chatting to the locals, and drinking a few pints of beer. Was glad to find a pint of Exmoor Beast after spending the earlier part of the week drinking more spring and summer inspired ale. Pub is very traditional looking and large, stone floors in bar so should be a good pleace to stop if youve got a bit soggy while out walking, or have a wet dog.

The best pub in Porlock. Popular with dog walkers and hikers and can get busy at weekends and especially during the summer months (not to mention wet and muddy). Good range of ales including Exmoor breweries Ale and Beast, St Austell's Tribute and Proper Job. Several ciders on pump alongside average wine. Small old bar is great and main area at front is fine. Large restuarant area at rear. Friendly publican and team. Recommended.

Stayed for weekend on B&B basis. Whole place smells of wet dogs. Indeed sometimes there were more than 6 dogs there at a time. Bedrooms tired and old fashioned and in dire need of a good clean. However, the food and drinks were good. Otter ale and Tribute went down well, as did the Exmoor.

Was staying in Porlock for Christmas and popped in here a few times. Beer very good and a cosy bar area. Lovely!

Called in here after walking from Minehead on the coastal path. Otter and Exmoor beers we had were excellent and it lived up to its GBG listing. The day's food special looking particularly enticing but alas the 'bus service on which we were dependant didn't do a service out and back from Minehead in the evening.
I'm sure it welcomes all its visitors but could I ask that some of the visitors do not cuddle and snog their dogs in the public bar!!

Just enjoyed the weekend in Porlock. There were 20 in our party and we spent Saturday evening in The Ship Inn for a pre-arranged celebratory 50th birthday meal. The ales (Exmoor / Tribute / Otter + 2 more) were all in good condition. The food was excellent. The landlord & his wife and all the staff worked very hard to ensure we all had a great time. We also spent Saturday & Sunday lunchtimes in there for beer & food. I really like the cosy little bar. A proper country pub feel to it. I'll definitely be visiting again when I'm next in the village. I can highly recommend it.

Late comment from September. Enjoyed an Exmoor Ale and Otter Bitter while waiting for the bus back to Minehead. Both served in good condition in this pleasant pub.

Decided too try this place one Sunday after reading varying reviews, put aging parents and uncle in car and off we went.We were the first recipients, the real ale shandys and pints were nothing to shout about, obvious the pipes hadn,t been pulled through, the sunday roast was run of the mill in my opinion, pork lunches served without the apple sauce, the beef was only half it,s portion once the fat was taken away, the occasion was further marred by some local shouting his comments rather than speaking them to the person in the other bar,And quite frankly i am not interested in what a busy night they had before, the quality of food/drink/service,should still be of merit, after all wasn,t i paying the same..

'Proper Job' .. This has to be the nicest pub have been in for a long while. Armed with 2 kids and small dog, received a great welcome whilst visiting Porlock. Nice little play area, not too modern and in keeping with atmosphere. Food was very nice and reasonably priced. Oh but the ale... all perfectly served at the right temperature and in the right glasses no less. Exmoor Gold as guest and Sharps Doom Bar, St Austell Proper Job, Otter and Exmoor Ale on whilst there. Went there every night for a week and met some real friendly locals. Great Landlord. TOP MARKS.

I returned recently and still rate this place up there. Good selection of ale, engaging landlord/staff, friendly locals and good looking dogs.
|
Certainly the best of the Porlock pubs. I think the area around the bar can compete with anything. The rest of the pub sprawls a bit gives those parts a "big pub" feel, but the garden seems very inviting. The people running the place are friendly and welcoming.

Having first visited The Ship Inn 26 years ago when it was a lovely country pub with first-class beer & food, we've witnessed its diminishing appeal over the last few years... until now. The current owners, since March '06, have made and are still making real improvements. The beer (Exmoor, Cotleigh & St Austell) is well kept and the food delicious. New furniture in the main bar & an impressive patio area have improved it enormously. We really like the cosy 'snug bar'. We're going back for a weekend in June (all the way from Essex) and I strongly recommend 'drew19' gives it another go. He'll be pleasantly surprised. It's the best of the 3 pubs in the village.

been travelling to this pub70mls 4yrs for food an beer,1st time since changed hands, ugh, still good beer but barman says what do u want, meatlasagne with no meat? just stodge we told waitress she laughed said i will tell somone an walked off, waited 50mins an no one came back to us.asked for black pepper an a lad bought out what looked like a dish of sand??wouldnt reccomend to an enemy. sorry porlock you have lost an ace pub we can see why it's no longer full.

The bar is excellent, nice old room, with a proper welcoming, local atmosphere & excellent beer. A bit smoky. The food was fine, but a little bland & quite pricy, though I may have simply made the wrong choice (pie of the day was a little "watery"). Patio & beer garden hard to tear yourself away from on a sunny afternoon though...
Overall a very good pub.

This pub changed hands in March 06. New owner continues to keep good range of real ales - Exmoor Ale, Cotleigh Barn and Tawny Ale, and St Austel Tribute which were all in good condition. Food was excellent in quality and value. Changes underway to interior decor and new outside patio.
|
Beautiful pub, full of character, great beer & food. Lovely patio & beer garden and kids & dogs most welcome. Also has games room with skittles (free of charge).
|
13th century inn with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Real ales including Cotleigh's Barn Owl with which I was particularly impressed. Not an extensive menu but they do a hearty Sunday roast. You will, however, have to go easy on the free nibbles if you want to do it justice.

nice quite pub friendly atmosphere
