In serious danger of closing down unless a buyer can be found. Temporary Landlord / Landlady leave after the weekend and they have been the only good people in there for a while.

Lazy landlord has left! Yippee!! Took hours to clean beer lines! He never cleaned them! Beer now drinkable...normal service has resumed!!
|
Beer is now very poor...previous licensee served several real ales and lines were cleaned....all change now...other places nearby where beer is drinkable...best avoided until licensee wakes up!

Have to agree with Robs comments about the pool table. The pub isn't big enough for it and it just gets in the way. Good crowd in there and the beer is good.

*oops* barmaid

Featuring probably the tallest bardmai in the world!!! Good beer too. 7/10

Good choice of local ales, but felt like a pub without much character. One end is dominated by a large widescreen TV, the other side has a pool table, jukebox and quiz machine. You'd really struggle to find a corner to get comfortable and enjoy a quiet drink. Also the lighting was very bright throughout which didn't help to create much of an atmosphere. Worth calling in, but certainly not a place I would want to settle at for the night.

Found this pub on a gray, rainy day, tucked away from the crowds. Had a couple of very good pints of Bombardier and the Missus had a couple of equally good pints of London Pride. I found it comfortable, hospitable and an all round pleasant place to relax on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect!

Friendly, relaxed local with a very warm welcome and efficient service. Four cask ales were available on my Wednesday evening visit. The much-maligned Greene King IPA was amongst those on offer. I tried it and went back for more and more! It was delicious and tasty - a credit to the cellarmanship at this pub. Definitely worth a visit.

A great pub run by a lovely couple Fred and Anne. A good selection of beers adds to the ambience. Highly recommended.

Traditional pub not far from Chelmsford station. The pub is in the current GBG and was still needed for a visit. I managed to fit a visit in whilst in Chelmsford for last weeks beer festival. The pub is in a side street not far from station and visible from that part of Duke St. Apparently the only pub of this name in the UK and certainly the only one on BITE. The pub is opened up but still seems to maintain the two separate bars. In one side the pool table, dartboard and jukebox. A large wide screen TV was on in the other bar showing live Ashes coverage on Sky Sports. In that bar is also a selection of daily papers available for customers to read and there is also a game and quiz machine. Hand pumps are on both sides of the bar; Deuchars, Bombardier, London Pride and GK IPA on my visit.

Called in this place for the first time in ages. Nice friendly welcoming atmosphere, excellent beer. One of the old style houses. Will certainly make many return visits. Can recommend it.

The Steamer is now back in safe hands with a publican that knows how to look after the beer, so previous adverse comment no longer applies

Absolutely disagree.. This old pub is the prefect anecdote to the weatherspoons and yates variety. It offers a unique charm, and is filled with friendly faces of ALL ages, and enables you to belong to a community. No fancy food, or money off coupons....good old fashioned beer, good old fashioned conversation....and not a non smoking area in site. Loved by all generations..a great place to be.

Steamer by name, Steamer by nature. A great big floating pan filling Steamer. This pub is the exact reason why we now have some many bloody Weatherspoons and Yates in the town centres. Resembles a half decent pub from the outside, but proves to be nothing more than a youth centre, a reliable source for your "enry the eighth", and a constant supplier of shite beer.
