Doombar was the only ale I could see on offer. To be fair it was ok. Very crowded on a warm evening so I sat outside but suffered from the smokers as mentioned by Ellisref. Only called here as I was waiting for a train at the station over the road.

Enquired if we could come in as we had the dog with us and was told we're dog friendly but some managers say yes but others say only in the garden/patio. It turned out to be the latter.
The choicer was Doom Bar or Town Crier Bitter - couldn't see who brewed it, it was ok.
Standard of literacy in Chester must be poor, two large signs on the patio saying it was now a non-smoking area but it didn't deter the chav couple sitting right next to one and the staff didn't do anything.

A chain style pub but a little more pub like than a Wetherspoons. Quite busy for 10 in the morning with a lot of folk looking like they'd been in there a while. the ale wasn't up to much though (Marstons) would have lager if I drop by again. It is over the road from the station.

Unchanged from my last visit 2 years ago except that yesterday two standard ales were available. I had Black Sheep which was fine. Beers were cheapest we encountered in Chester. Our party of racegoers sat in the large beer garden in lovely sunshine. The place was crowded.

Cheap and cheerful pub and was popular yesterday following Chester Races. However, only one ale available. More of a lager swillers establishment.

Black Sheep Bitter was just 1.99 a pint when visited a couple of weeks back, ideal place as already mentioned if waiting around for a train, 7/10

Perfect for the station, well kept beer, and a good choice of cheap food.

That said, I asked for 2 x scampi & chips, and was charged on the "2 meals for 6.95" deal, although we later saw a poster saying Scampi & chips was 2.49, so I was overcharged there a couple of quid - cannot say whether that was deliberate or the bar staff just forgot / didn't know - beware!

Otherwise a good pleasant atmosphere.

I wouldnt go out of my way to go to this pub, but luckily it is very close to the station so there is no need to go out of my way. Its a big pub, the beer is good, the food is good for the standard pub food that it is. If you have time to kill waiting for a train, I would recommend a pint and a burger here.

Can't see the appeal of this pub myself. Decor and ambience strike me as rather Weatherspoon-ish and transient, seemingly a popular place to pop into when weaving from one bar to another. It's certainly cheap enough to encourage hard drinking lone rangers who sit in corners with their best Friday night glower whilst also being a good rendezvous for the lads and their girl friends as they shriek in recognition at each other over a thirty foot distance. Still in fairness the beer was pretty decent and it seems pretty well liked, thriving in fact, so they must be doing something right and the absence of my disgruntled mug won't cause them any sleepless nights.

This has been one my favourite pubs in Chester since I started coming here for day trips from Shrewsbury. A very big building directly opposite the railway station with lounge and bar areas, and in the lounge area there's a big screen and a raised family area. I had 2 pints of Thwaites Bitter on this occasion and a lovely steak dinner before catching my train back home. An excellent pub to either start or finish a day out here, I recommend this place to any BITE member.
