The Berwick Inn now has a new owner who has taken over from Marston and is looking to make changes. The new team are seasoned pub managers and things are looking hopeful. I went in recently and understand that they are now a Free House. Excellent news as they will now be able to serve Harveys and long Man Ales. I really hope this is a proper new start for the pub - it looks encouraging so far!!

Hot off the press ...just re-opened with a new manager.....

Its probably fair to say, and reflecting the comments below, the pub has had a rough ride the past few years with publicans coming an going at a regular pace none of whom seem to have been able to make a go of the place.
Perhaps as a result of this, or the brewery's lack of interest, the pub closed for business in January and still remains closed now, (June), and its future must remain uncertain. Its certainly on a sizeable plot if it was ever to be developed for housing, a point not missed by some I'm sure.

We went to this pub before a gig being held at the village hall. So no prior knowledge of teh pub and no realistic choice either (we had travelled by train). Our initial impression was poor, an empty slightly run down bar, no one behind the bar or infront either. the main bar down the stairs was great. The landlord and his wife were very friendly and welcoming, newspapers available, and the food we saw being served looked like good size portions. Harveys was on offer, as a barrell on the bar which pelased my husband.

hay went to the berwick inn a few months ago you might of read my feelings on the pub. Anyway went for a drink with my wife. While speaking to the young lady at the bar she told me there was a few problems but have been sorted out since she and her husband to be' had gone into partnership with the land lady and land lord (tony and Linda) He has made progression in the kitchen and she has made good changes to the bar and hope to move upstairs soon to take a better look all round to try and enprove the place more, good luck to them all my time there was very pleasant.

I have recently move here from Devon and have made my way round altot of pubs in the last few months mainly to eat lunch. On my way to a pub not so far from the Berwick Inn we passed it and gave it a go, it had a nice big car park and lots of seating outside grate for summer and the kids. however i thought the bad state of the toilets was a one off but after reading the review below it does not look that way it puts you off eating anyway! it was very quite in there cant say much more as we decided to carry on to our original choice you know what they say dirty toilets dirty well you know!

I have just come back from a lovely time with my friends at The Berwick. Although it was a bit chilly we sat in the garden and had our lunch outside. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I was so impressed with the menu I have booked a table for six for Easter Sunday. I would certainly recommend The Berwick Inn to all my friends.

i went to the berwick inn for a meal with my family in october and it was lovely had great food and was looking forward to going back as i did on mothers day and im sorry to say the food was appalling the bar was dirty and the toilets smelt of urine maybe because it was all over the floor and had not been cleared up all the time we were there that was the worst thing. hope it get sorted out its half the pub it was before chirstmas. visited this pub as recommended by work colleagues. It was nice enough but not over impressed with the food. Lasagne was microwaved and and the brger was charcoal. Pleasent atmosphere and would go back for a drink but not the food

First visit here for 10 years about 2 months ago. Its a barn of a place, will need to be busy to make any money.
Very good. Obviously an improving pub. Keep it up. Will be back What a stupid comment about being too close to the railway line to have a peaceful drink. Its not Clapham Junction! And the kids wave at the trains.

Since Tony and Belinda took over the Berwick Inn in April 09 everything about it has improved 100%. Admittedly for the first few weeks there were teething problems to iron out but they were soon sorted. The atmosphere is great, you are always assured of a warm welcome and the home cooked food is delicious. Quiz night is fun and the live music on a Friday is brilliant.

Time to visit the Berwick again! After an appaling couple of years, the new landlords, Tony & Belinda, are really making an effort to give us our village pub back, with well kept ale (not Harveys unfortunately, as it's a Marstons pub) regular events including plenty of live music and a weekly quiz.

Nice location. Beer ok. Those were the good bits.
Can't rate the food though because it never arrived. On an average Sunday (not particularly busy) waited an hour to be told that one of the dishes on our order wasn't available. Waited another half an hour before leaving. Still no sign of any food.
Hence would definitely not recommend.

First visit in a long time and an enjoyable one. Nice drop of Pedigree and good food at reasonable prices. If I was going to be picky the place is probably due for a bit of a makeover but other than that - no complaints.
|
Very pleasant polite staff went out of their way to be helpful.
Beer garden very lovely but a bit close to the railway line for an entirely peaceful drink. Good place to wait for the train after a short amble round the wonderful countryside there. Guest beer excellent. Food looked and smelt delicious although I didn't have any. Pub gets an extra rating point for being so easy to get to by rail and is much better than its rating suggests.
It isn't your typical larger louts pub, more a good place to meet friends for a quiet drink if you want to get out of town.

So why not ask to have the sparkler removed?
|
As this website is called 'beer in the evening' I rate the pub on its beer. The Harveys Sussex Best is the only ale available and is served through a sparkler making it unpalatable. I only give it a 2 rating for the fairly decent food - but it's nothing special. There are much better pubs near by so no reason to go here!

After visiting the pub I was very impressed with the service of the staff, landlord and landlady. Food was excellent, Very friendly pub As far as the other comments I have read on the site I feel the people have put this pub down and I feel that they are wrong and that is why I am sending this comment. Well done to all staff, landlord and landlady

Glad I visited for myself rather than take other reviewers word. The Ale (Harveys) was excellent and the food was good value. Good to see The Berwick on the up again.
|
Yes This place was very disapointing and the staff just slap your food down on the table like a dogs dinner both the lanlords dont make any effort to make the customers happy take a recommendation from the innkeeper Avoid Avoid Avoid!!!

Tried to have lunch here about a month ago. Turned up just before noon but no signs of activity. One or two staff arrived a few minutes later but could not detect any cooking activity. The sign that used to read 'Food served all day, every day' has had the 'all day' bit painted out. A pity if they have restricted their activities as I recall the food and ale being very good.

We arrived from the North i.e. from across the level crossing, at about 5.20pm to be greeted by half a dozen garden tables and a locked door, so sat down to wait for the next train. It was only later when somebody could be seen in the darkened back room that we walked round the other side to find it was actually open. Overall doesn't look appealing - exterior, black painted sign, row of lined up tables by the windows that we caught our (now soon to arrive) train anyway.
