The Evening Star, Brighton

This pub still has the best beer for many, many miles. They have cleaned the floor and fixed the loo (kind of) but my friends and I are slowly stopping going there. It is no longer our automatic first choice as a pub.

We go to the pub to chat and to drink good beer. The chat bit is now difficult. The loud music they have started to play in recent months means we all have to shout so, not for the first time, last night we walked out.

Maybe they are aiming to get a different type of person visiting or drive some of their regular customers away.

They have a huge and diverse clientele so I'm not sure who they want to attract. The background music is aimed at my age group (early middle aged) so it won�t attract many young people.

Maybe they want to discourage some of the young women who used to come to talk and have a couple of halves, because this is what they are now doing quite successfully along with any males who primarily want to chat. Maybe they want to involve the smokers outside in the pub atmosphere with sound or just sound lively from the street.

Whatever they are trying to do, the overwhelming background noise means we at least, regretfully, won�t be visiting again in a hurry.

The Evening Star, Brighton

One of the few friendly pubs in Brighton. After reading someone else�s comments I can say I've got talking to a bin man, teachers, IT gurus, musicians, stylists, shop workers, people with learning difficulties, people who may be geniuses, architects, lawyers, rail workers , care assistants and many more entirely wonderful people. Most evenings if you stay there for a while someone will chat or at least say hello.

1. The Evening Star is an entirely wonderful pub serving a huge range of excellent beers. It deserves a 10.
2. Lager may or may not be beer.
