Large pub located on Newport Quay - a good selection of real ale and well kept. Good variety of food but dark wood interior and subdued lighting means it's virtually impossible to read the menu! Family friendly and waterside seating area, worth a go but avoid the dingy interior!

The Bargemans Rest is a large former Ringwood pub (now taken over by Marstons) with a fairly peaceful setting next to the River Medina with plenty of boats, ducks and swans. There is an outdoor seating area where you can take it all in. Inside, there is plenty of room for diners. I struggled to locate the gents at first. Ales were Ringwood Forty Niner, Best & Showman's Tipple, Goddards Fuggle Dee-Dum, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, Marstons Old Empire & Brakspear Bitter. We moved on from here to the William Coppin (poor branch of Wetherspoons) and the highlight of our trip, the Newport Ale House). Neither are listed on here. I will request the latter to be added.

We go to the Bargemans Rest quite frequently as it's very convenient if you arrive in Newport by boat. The food is good, not brilliant, but better than average for the Island. The beer varies considerably in quality, but they're happy to let you taste them first so you should find one that's to your liking. Gets very busy if you want to sit outside, and the tables and chairs outside are horrible plastic things which frankly need replacing with more stable and better quality units. Overall, it's a nice pub.

Ales in very decent condition, only handicapped by usual IOW problem of few micro brewery offerings from across the water. Food was quite superb, both quality and quantity.

Enormous portions of food, it seemed to be pretty popular!

My parents tried this pub a couple of times while on Holiday in June 2011. I can't advise on the drink, but the food was very plentiful, and they both came out of there rather stuffed. The staff were also very friendly, and helpful.

I disagree with the people who say the beer's well kept here. Like Ventnor's Spyglass, which I think is owned by the same people, it flatters to deceive by laying on lots of real ales that taste poor. I've often left my drink unfinished and have never said "That's a lovely pint."

Went here whilst on the museum bus running day and didn't dissappoint. It's a bit foodie/family biased but then the bar has an excellent range of beers including two from breweries on the island so it's all round appealing. We ate and the food was good, hot and substantial.

I have to say I wish I could find a pub like this every time I have to stay away. Good food, good beer and good tunes. Well run and friendly - what more could you want?

One of a small chain of pubs on the Island, this one stands out as outstanding for it's excellent beer, friendly staff and good pub food.
One of the very few good pubs in Newport.
|
Excellent range of well kept beer and friendly staff. Food is also well worth a try.

Two words....Caps lock

I DON'T KNOW IF I AGREE WITH THE PLAIN AND SIMPLE FOOD COMMENTS, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AND THE FOOD IS NORMALLY WELL PRESENTED AND ON THE BIG SIDE! I HAVE FOUND IT TASTES REALLY GREAT TOO, BY THE WAY I AM VERY JUDGEMENTAL AND FUSSY ON THE HYGIENE STAKES, SO YOU CAN REST ASSURED IT'S A GOOD STANDARD PUB.

Good food, nice and simple, great beer and fab band. Good with the kids too. Nice pub considering its location to town.

Went in with a group of 20, not booked. food took 25min on a full thusday night and was great. beer was in A1 condition, 7 good ales on, some local, all really well kept. staff really friendly. will def be goin back!!

A particularly unquaint riveside pub; beer good though. Malcolm from Totland nowhere in sight.

Dinner on May 11th was pretty good - I got the last order of pan-fried sardines.
We tried most of the beers - Ventnor Golden Bitter and Goddards Inspiration, and Badger Hopping Hare and First Gold were all in very good condition, though the advertised Yates was not yet on.
The live mainly Irish folk band (a 4 or 5 piece) got going about 9.00 .... by 10.15 we felt it was time to call it a night, as the Irish pipes had, well into the second set, yet to come out, and we'd had an early start from London at 6.00 AM that morning.

Perfect location by the Medina riverside and away from the noisy town traffic, still very central. Lots of space; both indoor and outdoor seatings. Equipped with different maritime details. Food and ale OK. Beeing a thirsty tourist in Newport it's a must visiting this pub.

we are regulars at this pub and find the facilities very satisfactory, i would say deffinatly above average. The food has a wide variey of choice, with very big portions and of a very excellent standard. I would deffiently recommend the pub, with its beautiful waterside views and location it is a perfect night out in all seasons. It also accomadates for young children with a non smoking family room and highchairs. It also has a very big function room upstairs that has a bar which was perfect for our friends wedding reception, and it had an amazing buffet. Also most nights it has live music which deffiently entertains the guests and livens the place up. All round this is the perfect pub, and by far the best on the island.

Enjoyable Friday evening May 5th - tasty fish for dinner; 2 well-kept (but a tad too cold) beers - Ventnor Gold Bitter and Goddards Inspiration; live folk trio - so well known they needed no introduction.

A great LITTLE pub ? blimey,I'd hate to see a big one !
|
A few years back i had problems finding this place as was new to the island. Glad i didn't give up as a great little pub with good food.
|
Nice Pub in a good location next to the river, Great to pop in on those sunny Summer afternoons and have a cold real ale on the front decking watching the boats. I ate here some time ago with 5 friends, the food is not anything special, my friend had to send his meal back as the meat tasted off. The pub gets quite busy in the evenings with people eating, I think its a case of being handy and away from the town rather than being a good meal.

Very well run pub, food basic but excellent, the real ales are well looked after, or there is draught German larger. On most nights there is live Jazz bands, not cheep but a good night out, I recomend it
