Visited the pub for the first time last week. Held the door open for 3 "gentlemen" who were clearly locals who were following me in and the landlady promptly went to serve them first despite being ahead of them. Summed up the pub as one for local people only. Beer OK but won't bother coming back.

I've just read in the Argus that the new licencees who inherited the pub are going to throw the pub open to football fans on home match days. If this is true, dear old John will be turning in his grave. OK they want to make a fast buck, but what a kick in the teeth for John!

Good traditional pub. No fruit machines, no television, no jukebox. AND no football! If John, the landlord, wants to keep it a football-free zone, then all power to his elbow! Some of us have wider interests that we can share in a convivial setting.

Better than i thought, popped in for a drink when passing last Friday 3 room pub with a 2 dinning areas and 1 bar area 3 different real ales on and cheap food friendly bar staff and locals where there was a mixture of older people and students. Will pop back nearer to when the ground is finish to see if there any change about letting football fans in.

Great place to go for a quiet drink. Menu isn't really up to much if you want anything more than sandwiches. Very opinionated landlord, John - pick topics of conversation carefully! (Don't mention the Falmer Stadium!)
No Harvey's (landlord dispute with the brewery) but a very good regular selection of other beers.

super beer Palmers.Eccentric surroundings in the bar.A find.
|
old fashioned surroundings (one half pink flower curtains, the other half old wooden beams and benches), neon paper signs (90% about not smoking), the place could do with updating. But clean.
But this shouldn't let you put you off. For lunch, sandwiches are good (especially ham/gammon and salmon), so are the jacket potatoes. Good choice of beer (mainly German). good patio in a lovely old village (with the A27 running through the middle!)
Not somewhere to go for dinner or a good night out, but great for a lunch. Next to two unis, could do much more business if they tried.

I first went in this place nearly 30 years back and then it was a real student's pub. These days there are better bars on campus. Not what I would call a village pub - the decor is a bit bland and I'm told the food isn't up to much. My pint of London Pride was shot so full of CO2 that I'm convinced this place is a major contributor to global warming. I give it another 30 years and then try it again.

The Swan Inn has about 2,500 students living on its doorstep and still it closes in the afternoon. Although obviously not an astute businessman, the owner certainly knows how to maintain a traditional country pub. The ales are always of a great quality and the food is typical pub fare. The staff seem pleasant enough if a little slow at serving customers.

Good beer, but industrial food. Best to keep quiet about most things, especially football as the landlord doesn't really like customers. Have been here loads of times and have yet to get in an argument, which is quite a feat.

The good points the beer is excellent you must try the palmers from Bridgeport Dorset The pub has kept the old fashioned feel .The landlord is great lover of old railways and classic cars and local politics get him talking on theses subjects and he will talk all night I have never tried the food but the Sunday roast seems very popular The bad points remember the old drinking hours this pub still sticks by them. For a free house the prices should be a little lower has far has I know the landlord has never brought anyone a drink and wears trousers without pockets if you have been on the receiving end please e mail me. The landlord hates smoking, football and will make this point heard. Brighton football club have been given the green light to build there new stadium opposite wear a football shirt in this pub and you will be barred overall view a very nice pub with no smoking bars and good beer

The owner has a rather short fuse and its best not to take kids here. The beer is excellent and smoking is banned throughout. Very nice patio area
