A touch above average. The Firebird Pacific Gem was very pleasant. Some effort had been made to provide local ales and cider. Polite, engaged staff. Mixed clientele. A bit shabby but without much character or atmosphere to compensate.

Okay for a pint, nothing more though.

Walked in. I was the only customer. Asked if the deafening music could be turned down a bit. Barman said it 'wouldn't go any lower'! Walked out.

Tried this place yesterday, dodging the rain. Lovely pint of guinness, fairly empty, nice man having his lunch. Ok for a quick one.
|
This pub has delicious food and a good selection of ales, great relaxing music too.
|
Went in here monday after the marathon (waiting for the Evening Star to open). Had a fine selection of ales on and they were in good condition. Would go back again.
|
From first entering, it looks a good pub;with good selection of beers on tap. And Sky screens. However, having had a goodly walk and afternoons session up at the BIB & TUCKER I first need to pee. Avoid the place! The toilets are filthy. Not just a case of nobody cleaning them this morning; lets say for month!!! Filthy, filthy, filthy!

we were seriously ripped off in this joint yesterday.8.30 for a pint and a bacardi and diet coke........shocking!!... it was only 6.50 for the same drinks on the pier (and a better view)

We went down for Brighton for a day out a few days before Christmas. Where did the last three weeks disappear? After an enjoyable day we decided to have one (or more) for the road. Being conveniently situated near the station it ideal for that last drink. The first thing that struck us when we walked in was that you nearly walked into the bar. It appears that the original bar has been replaced by a central island bar. This seems to serve no useful purpose as the back of the bar is no more than a path to the, rather grubby, toilets. The beer was fine but the choice limited seems more of a lager pub. There was an offer on shots that a couple of the group went for the Jagermeister. This should be served ice cold but was room temperature! When we came to leave it was hard to get out as the small gap twixt bar and door had a chav blockage! Unless I see that it is under new management/been refitted/etc I think will pass by next time.

Sad to say this has gone downhill since the landlady left. A couple of the old staff were still there when I last went in but it has definately lost its spark. They've ruined it by taking out the lovely long bar and sticking a round one right in the middle by the door, makes it feel a bit cramped and gloomy. I'm very surprised by the post about the food as they did some of the best you'd find in Brighton. I beleive it was run as a seperate franchise so I suppose it's changed hands! A real shame to see one of my favourite pubs go downhill so quickly.

Sells real ales but I don't think they are that committed to them. The quality wasn't great and it seems more like an evening lounge bar than a pub.
|
Granted, close to the station. but thats where the good bit ends. the staff is least helpful. more worried abt overtime i guess. the ales were not up to the scratch and were pricey. they shud also turn the heat up for the dishwasher.
now the food. the menu is impressive and builds up your hope until you see your portion and stale frozen chips.
The toilets are FILTHY. and worse still, the kitchen door is right in front of the toilets. Smelly!
Thoroughly disappointed!! my ratings say it all.

Good atmospheric pub with candles on the tables, friendly staff, three real ales, range of food (seen but not tried), and nice background music. Not as good a beer range as the Evening Star but nothing like as packed either. Much more salubrious than the Railway Bell (if you don't mind going down to the basement for the loos!) and the TV's not so loud either. Best of the bunch round the station for a quiet get-together.

Handy pub just outside the brighton Railway Station. I popped in for something to eat and found a good selection of fresh food on the menu. I ordered fresh sea bass, and it arrived at my table in good time. The food was well presented and hot. The sea bass was cooked well and tasted really fresh. I had a choice from a good selection of beers as well. The atmosphere is airy and clean with ample seating.

Went in to watch the football, nice staff and a good pint, a little on the pricey side.

Best pub near the station by far. Sorry to hear landlady is moving on aas she always made you feel welcome. Best of luck in Croydon!
|
Itis so rare to go into a pub (especially near a station!) where you are made to feel like a regular if you order a second drink. The landlady loves her sport and and her pub and makes you believe that she wants to be there which again is rare in england. Loads of drink offers great pint of star and big tellys but still retains a bit of character. top pub!!

Lovely pub, with very cheap Harveys before 7/8... Definitely not a gay bar!
|
Er, I don't think this is a gay pub, Greshon? I think you're referring to the other Queen's Head, round the back of St James Street (and now renamed the Three & Ten, or something).
|
I was pretty pleased with this famous gay venue. The pub sign outside, instead of sporting a picture of Queen Victoria's head, sports a picture of Freddie Mercury's head. Very friendly, and I was even cracked on to by a handome fellow - despite the fact that I was with my girlfriend.
|
Amazing pub, great atmosphere, brilliant staff, Tuaca on the shelf if required and good selection of food too ... will continue visiting the pub in the day and night for all occasions!!
|
I love this pub! Been going there for just over 4 yrs now... Bar staff are lovely! Food is good.. always great for chilling out on a friday night after work...

This is my favourite lunchtime pub, quiet enough to sit and have a chat but with a good atmosphere and nice food. Also has one of the best looking landladys in town but Guinness is now 3.10 a pint which is expensive even by Brighton standards. May have to forgo the love sick ogling for a cheaper liquid lunch!
|
Boring fact. I was a plastic mod back in '79. One bank holiday in the queens head some skins threw a plastic chair through the window and i got arrested for hiding under the table.
|
This pub has suffered from some bad PR. The Queens Head is Brightons number one gay venue but It's not this Queens head. Sadly there are two and I know several people who dont realise that another one exists in the dark back street of Kemptown and refuse to use the one outside the station thinking that it is the gay one. This is a fairly average pub with nothing in particular to recomend it but it is not the gay one.
|
I'd say best of the three close to station pubs - good range of beers and wines, nice comfy seats and pints at 1.75 each - winner

Three pubs are 'opposite' Brighton railway station. Grand Central, this one & the Railway Tavern. Try Grand Central first, than this one.. which is part of the Indigo chain. It's Ok, but just catering for passing trade. Avoid the Railway Tavern.
