There appears to be a change of landlord, and the pub has been refurbished with a stronger emphasis on Arkells branding. I took my mum here for lunch on a Monday and the pub was doing a good trade - mainly for its food. My steak and ale pie was unremarkable although on the plus side there were three fresh vegetables. My mum greatly enjoyed her smoked salmon and prawns on a bed of salad with pine kernels. The price of £9.95 for each dish was reasonable. I had a pint of 3Bs which was in excellent condition. Wiltshire Gold and a darker house beer at 5% were also available. Nice outside area for eating and a conservatory. Accommodation is also available.

Yes, as said, it's a pleasant friendly village pub with some nice touches, such as an open log fire.
The ales were on form when we called a couple of days ago. My pint of Wiltshire Gold went down particularly well.
The food was good quality pub fare on this occasion at least.
The customers at lunchtime appeared to be quite often older people, and there was a concessionary menu for them.

Nice old village pub run by a friendly couple. Three beers from Arkells were on hand-pump and the 3Bs could not be faulted. The meals cannot be faulted on quantity, but unfortunately they aren't great if you don't order them when they are freshly made. Twice running I've had reheated pie - the charred pastry could be used as an offensive weapon. When the food isn't reheated it's fine. Nevertheless a nice place to enjoy some excellent real ale.

Had a pleasant weekend lunch here. Drinking the Arkells was nostalgic for me (drank a lot in my Uni days).

lovely meal, reasonable prices, nice beer and a pleasant atmosphere. Not many of these country pubs around these days so visit as soon a you can.

Morris sides had a good evening at the Carpenters, BBB and Kingsdown were both in good form

We went there on a bank holiday Monday for the first time and felt very welcome. The food was excellent, very good portions and good value for money. What we particularly liked was that the children's menu was exactly the same as the adults just smaller and cheaper. We will definitely go there again if nearby.

The pub now has new owners who impressed me very much with the friendly approach. Food is as good as ever. This pub did have a Basil Fawlty-esque landlord but now he has gone, this place will be better than ever.

Visited here on a cold December lunch-time: roaring fire and a conservatory dining-room with great views. Bar staff very friendly and food good and reasonably priced. Ditto the beer. Would visit again.

A fantastic pub! 3 minutes off the A34 so easy to find. A few nice, friendly locals. Cask ales, a pair of springers and friendly landlord - what more can you ask. Nice honest food at a good price. Visit, you'll love it

What a nice little pub! Just what you want on a damp evening. Cosy and warm (real fire) couple of dogs snoozing, no music or electronic games. Excellent homemade fish pie and beer straight out of the barrel. Will certainly be visiting again....

Good unpretentious country pub. Recently I have had some memorably good pints of Arkell's 3Bs on gravity. Can't comment on food. Worth a visit.

I don't have a thick wallet or a thick skin and I am certainly not a BNP member, I just think this is one of the best pubs in the area. My wife and I have always had good friendly service here. Beer and food are always of the highest quality and it has been a real treat to sit in the garden ejoying the views.

Small yes...extremely friendly....you're having a giraffe. We went in this overpriced excuse for a pub with our next door neighbours who are posh seventy year olds, and sat outside. When the landlord asked if we needed an umbrella my neighbour said it looked like it would be needed soon (as it was beginning to look quite rainy). The landlord told us to "quit moaning" and suggested that if we didn't like it in this country we should move abroad. One for those with thick wallets and thick skins, or BNP members only.

Small and extremely friendly village local with well kept Arkells beers and a varied selection of wines. Well appointed rear conservatory with views stretching to Watership Down. Good selection of food from simple snacks to more substantial meals. Virtually next door to Sandham Memorial Chapel which houses the paintings of Stanley Spencer.
