A very small pub with a single lounge which sells beer direct from the barrel. Some seating and it majors on beer from the Flowerpot Brewery.
Excellent little pub with good value ales from the superb Flowerpots Brewery. Even got a rare smile from the barman on my last visit. The pub dog is usually friendlier.
Why are so many of the Public Bar customers such absolute wankers? I think I'll give it a rest for a few months and see if they die off.
Still the best pub in the area.
Rabbi - 24 Aug 2015 21:00 |
Cracking pub I try to use whenever possible and always if travelling from the darkest South West to Portsmouth for a ferry. A simple divert off the M27 that will not unduly delay you. Excellent array of gravity delivered beers from the barrel, particularly the flowerpots range at very very reasonable prices and the food looked pretty good yesterday as well.
Log fire, friendly lot of locals. Well behaved dogs on leads welcome too.
A shame we had to leave and I was the driver this time!
Well it's been 7 years since I wrote a review for my local pub and I have to say that The Wheatsheaf is still the best in the world. Don't come here if you want to know the truth about yourself !!!
Gooden's Gold voted by CAMRA the best beer in Hampshire 2013 on good form as ever and the roast beef and Yorkshire pud better than on the Queen Mary 2 last week. Only my opinion of course.
A pub worth going out of your way for. Gooden's Gold always perfect. Nice garden. Food seems popular but I'm too much of a skinflint to waste good beer money.
MarkM - 30 Aug 2013 10:05 |
Although the Hampshire Bowman is still my favorite pub in the area due to the great rural location, atmosphere, beer and availability of food, this pub is top of tree for the beer purist. I have never been served an imperfect pint and the value is unbeatable. Will always have Goodens Gold and other Cheriton ales (can't believe any Real Ale drinker would not appreciate these?) alongside good guest ales from the excellent Oakleaf Brewery. Serving manner can be a bit hit and miss?
Another vote for this straight-forward pub. The food availability is hit and miss but if you want grub, go to one of the many pubs in the area that offer it. If you want good, reasonably priced beer, go here.
Have to disagree again - beer on song, service quick, and barmaid pulling pints absolutely charming (Sat afternoon during the rugger match: you know who you are!).
Have to agree with previous - service is a bit hit and miss depending who is serving I think - not a fan of cheriton beer, but kept well here feels like a proper pub - very informal still.
odbod - 28 Oct 2011 13:04 |
Excellent pub with excellent and reasonably-priced beer from Cheriton. Only let down by the grumpy, unwelcoming barmen. Replace him and it will be perfect.
Hearty congratulations to owners, management & staff for your recent accolade of "Pub of the year" well deserved.
Sorry, should of course read S. Hants CAMRA!!!
DTR2K - 30 Mar 2011 10:54 |
Congratulations on being SE Hants CAMRA pub of the year! Well deserved, beer is still as exceptional as always.
DTR2K - 28 Mar 2011 00:17 |
Can't rate this pub highly enough. Can always guarantee a great pint and although it's a little bit of trek out here I keep making excuses to come and sample, in particular, the Flowerpots IPA (6%) along with the regular Goodens Gold or (Oakleaf) Nuptu' Ale. As has been said, a wonderful unspoilt country pub - not for the trendy though?
Now this was a real corker - a bar area as long as your arm, but without a handpump in site. That's because all the decent ale's stored on stillage behind, and pints are poured effortlessly by the attentive staff on an almost mechanical basis, given the understandable popularity of the Loc-ale range - oh, and the prices, which I must say for a countryside drinking-house were very competitive indeed. The beers we had the delight in sampling really were on splendid show; the Flower Pots Perridge Pale perhaps challenging for the "pint of the weekend", which believe me was no mean feat given the quality and quantity of beverages that passed our lips over a truly landmark 4-day session.
The pub itself is a classic rural community centre, which could still be found anywhere in England, thank God. The people ranged from young families grabbing lunch to old boys having a quiet few; it was smart yet not in any way pretentious or self-conscious. An absolute winner, and one which is sure to please many if you spare the time to find it.
Well done folks.
Excellent traditional country pub; Flowerpots was loevely and felt cosy place to relax. Posher customers (e.g. Bugle in Twyford regulars) might struggle with more relaxed service !
My favourite pub in Hampshire! Wonderful selection of real ales at sensibel prices. Never been served a less than perfect pint. Excellent modestly priced food. Friendly landlord and landlady. Real characters in the bar. Sadly just a little too far to walk from where I live.
I get the feeling it depends oin the time of the month with this pub! been twice recently, treated off handedly both times - great beer, but they seem to pick and choose who they are going to serve - strange.
odbod - 14 Sep 2010 14:53 |
Well I have been there a couple of times in the last couple of months and found the pub really good. Nice atmosphere, great beer and Reavers Rant were also very good! HOWEVER, I visited with my wife and we stood at the right at the bar for about 5-7 minutes (which is quite a long time if you try it) with out getting served. One person was being served before us and one other sat at the bar. 3 others came in after us and were served before us even though we were standing in front of them!! It was actually really strange - never experienced anything like it to be honest. At first I thought perhaps the barman had some sort of "problem" but he seemed ok with others. Really weird. Second time we went we were passed over again but not so badly. Would still highly recommend the pub - please go - you might actually be entertained by the bar staffs approach. We just laughed it off, but really it wasn't good....

Makes me wonder if karenf14small and husband have ever been into an English pub before. karenf14small has never left a comment on any other pub on BITE. Look at the previous reviews for this pub, loads of them, every one praising this little gem of a typical country pub serving excellent beers. Also for a long time recently the pub was top of the BITE Top 40 Pubs in the UK. I suggest that anyone who stands at the bar in this pub will be served in (reasonable) order if they are not wandering about and obviously require serving. Get a life and learn some pub etiquette. You missed out on some exceptional beers.
In reading the comment left by BITE user karenf14small I feel the need to respond to this review as I consider it unfair. I frequent many real ale pubs and would not be considered a 'local' in any of them, being quite happy to sit at the bar with my drink watching the world go by. Assuming I have this particular customer correct I was in The Wheatsheaf at the time of his visit and observed him continually wandering off from the bar in the direction of the toilet and the garden, never really settling at the bar to order a drink. A few customers came in which the barman served in turn. All I can say that as it was quite busy at the time and the fact that this particular customer did not stay at the bar to order his drink how was the barman supposed to know exactly when it was his turn to be served?
As I have stated before I have visited many real ale pubs and have had my share of bad and slow service, which I agree is unacceptable. However, what I find more unacceptable is when customers verbally abuse bar staff even when they consider it justified.
Don't be tempted to pop into this "nice cosy little pub", as we were; my husband called in on our first visit, he stood at the bar whilst 4 people came in after him and were served first, who we can only think must be locals, he then mentioned to the bar man that he had been waiting whilst four people served first, the barman then proceeded to serve someone else who came in.....My husband then finally took the hint and left .....PLEASE don't anyone else make the mistake of calling in - new customer's are not wanted and will be ignored..
Had a cracking time here last night. After playing at Waterlooville we arrived around 8 and drank Elder Ale, Goodens, the ubiquitous Perridge and Suthwyks Liberation. All Ales were as good as ever. A special mention should go to the lovely, welcoming barmaid called Sandra (?) and Tim the Landlord as they were both very busy but served with great ease even though the place was rammed. A rendition of 'Happy Birthday' from my team mates was commented on as 'in tune' and we enjoyed every moment there as always! We'll be in again soon and until then, thank you.
Always a good traditional beer pub. As usual Flower Pots "Goodens Gold" and a very decent Bates Bitter.
Visited last Saturday for the first time this season and found it as good as ever. Suthwyk Liberation was marginally the top drop and would sell well anywhere. Nicely busy but the bar staff are always attentive and friendly. Look forward to our next visit soon.
Very good beer, soft drinks were a bit pricey for drivers. Agree this is an unspoilt pub, but felt a bit clicky. if it was walkable though I would go more often.
odbod - 26 May 2010 10:46 |
Great selection of beers. Lovely atmosphere as well!
One of the best pubs in this part of the world withou doubt. Fabulously kept beer. I have never had anything close to a pint that wasn't perfect. Beer prices are reasonable, as someone else has said I do feel stung by the soft drink prices
What i dont understand is all these fantastic reviews add up to only 7.2 on the national scale. People must be voting without leaving comments. This site should not be wide open to abuse from people who don't even visit the pub they are rating!
Certainly a "desert island pub" - great ales, people, music, location, building, prices...whats's not to like? Undoubtedly one of my top 8 in the country.
as an ex licensee of twenty one years service i like to think that in the world of pubs i am quite experienced it is my honest opinion that the wheatsheaf at shedfield is the best all round pub i have ever visited and should you be a fan of english ale then you need go no further.larry walder
Good pub in the 'old fashioned' meaning of the word, not for Cafe Nero lovers! Very good beer, though soft drinks (for the driver - bless her) were a bit hefty in price. Could argue that its a bit clicky, but without regulars pubs fail, so a small price to pay to keep this old un going.
odbod - 14 Jan 2010 11:38 |
Excellent tradional pub, great beers on offer, the Flowerpots IPA is a exceptional beverage, even if it is 6%! Food a delight and everyone is made to feel welcome, a pub to visit for sure. 10/10
great pub and excellent selection of very well kept beers and very competitively priced too.
The Flowerpots Perridge Pale is a must
Great food, the cajen chicken is a must have. Great beer, lovely garden, friendly staff.
One of the last "Real Pubs" in the area, superb selection of ales, great food,& the best live music around, well worth a visit.

If you missed the beer festival then shame on you..what a fantastic choice of beer good at reasonable prices, music every day and the sun was out, what more can you ask for. Pencil in end of may bank holiday for next year..
Visited after winning our opening match in Portsmouth. We had as always a good and varied selection of Ale to choose from. Even though the place was packed, the Landlord made time for a quick chat with us and remembered us from last season. As I mentioned, all the Ale was top notch. Perridge Pale Ale at a very tasty 3.6abv,Storridge Stout 4.5,Goodens Gold 4.8 and their Guest was Oakleaf Nuptu-ale. Looking forward to the 23rd May as they've got a Festival on from the 22nd until 25th.
A pub with character and characters. Beer is out of this world, always in prime condition and plenty of guest ales available. Everyone is welcome no matter what you do, who you are or how you dress you will feel at ease here.
Up to usual standards, excellent beer on stillage, friendly clientele. Keep it up.
There are'nt many left like this .A stillage of 12 firkins behind the bar for all to see. The beer here is fantastic, and so is the cajun chicken. You would be mad to miss it. Bring your dog. Great atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome.
VERY WELCOMING FIRE & GOOD BEER LOVELY HAM SANDWICHES
A real "public house" (someone's front room that has been opened up to the public. Beers are served straight from the cask. There are always 5-6 real ales on, as well as Thatcher's Cider. All food is home-cooked from fresh ingredients. Don't tell anyone or it'll get too popular!
sunday lunches are fantastic. delicious home cooked food. thank you! great beer also!
i'm tired of the hype. i'm bored of this pseudo celebrity nonsense surrounding modern drinking establishments. all I want to say is, this is a great pub never get me out of here.
I had the opportunity to visit this pub about 2 years ago. Thoroughly impressed. A great selection of real ales excellently kept. Nice friendly atmosphere and the food was good. I woudl certainly visit this pub again I was in the area.

I had the opportunity to visit this pub about 2 years ago. They have a great selection of local rel ales, excellently kept. Good friendly atmosphere and good food. All round a very enjoyable visit and I woudl certainly visit again if I am in the area.
Visited yesterday was suprised how friendly the pub was, lovely warm feeling about it ( nice log fire roaring) and 5 real ales available and at reasonable prices as well (2.30-2.50) a proper pub as the saying goes. Well worth the visit if your in the area.
visited the pub last week for the live band and it was an occasion to be remembered. Great live band with an atmosphere to experience. Hope to be there next week for more of the same, superb pub;and great real ale.
My grandparents visited the Wheatsheaf every Sunday. When my grandmother passed away myself and my grandfather continued to do so. The Wheatsheaf is faultless. Their food, especially the cajun chicken, is absolutely superb. Never overcooked nor undercooked. The variety of entertainment and drinks are highly recommended as being the best for many miles. I travel from Portsmouth just to see the friendly staff and regulars. I would highly recommend The Wheatsheaf for many occasions, whether it's a quiet Sunday lunch or an evening with the girls. : )
ok. in reply to chrisP87, I've got better things to do than leave average feedback for all the mediocre pubs i've been in to. however i felt that the wheatsheaf deserved a great review as its a cracking pub. as you live in southampton come on in for a pint. you might find you like it. oh and for your information i don't suffer from MPD. and neither do I.
I went here last summer and thought the beer was excellent, and I have done loads of reviews! Will visit again when im down again. Carefree
but this is an excellent pub, often stop for a couyple of pints, well kept beer on gravity which is rare for the area, and a landlord who is always there, that is even rarerin these parts. i've got no problem in recomending that you stop here for a pint
Hmmm....all but one of the reviews since the 23rd October written by posters with no comments for other pubs. A prime candidate for MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) ? I'm sure Biker will be along in a minute.
love this pub. top beer, curious locals and a landlord who is always approachable. just not from behind. one of the few 'proper' boozers left and the food ain't half bad either. highly recommended. Love it!
this pub is well i dont no how to put it. its fantastic, live music most saturdays, vinces teeth are brilliant so entertaining and a great range of music. the bar staff are very friendly and always quite amusing with the exception of the landlord who makes the pub really with his famous grumpy attitude! this pub is fantastic just come and see for yourself!
Good friendly pub selling good beer at reasonable prices. Good honest food. A great shame they dont sell Bowman ales. A a big plus is there is no piped music and no fruit machines
The pub, the beer & the company go from strength to strength. Please avoid this pub as it is becoming much too popular. Us locals want to keep it to ourselves but will always welcome visitors really.
Very welcoming fires this time of year, stoke it up I say, the bigger the better......Beer is very good apparently, but as a wine drinker (hic) I wouldn't know. Friendly, if mad, people will discuss any topic of your choice from Scuba diving in the Maldives to local Bus timetables. Grub is superb, huge portions, good value. Tim the landlord awaits your orders !!!
Proper Pub. Properly kept beer. Proper service. Proper food. Proper job enough said. TRY it.
The only decent pub left in the village. Black Dog the landlord is so camplacent and Shite beer, the landlord at the Sams has ruined the best pub around and he supports Pompey his beer is Shite as well.
When we rediscovered this pub a couple of years ago, as we walked in, the barmaid was chopping sprouts on the bar ...... I knew this was the pub for me! Beer quality is 10/10 and there is always a mouth watering selection on tap. Open fire on cold days, great beer garden out back, and good parking opposite if required. Its even fun sitting out front by the main road catching the evening sun!
Great pub, keeps my husband out of the house.
Best real ale pub around, quality beer only 2.50 a pint. Come and try for yourself
Must be the best value real ale pub in Hampshire if not the country. Great Blues/jaz on a Sat night
Excellent beer from Cheriton, excellent selection of guest beers, all kept well. Much chatter in a friendly atmosphere, NO Juke box, NO fruit machine. Lunchtime food is good quality and well priced.. Helps if your a dog lover. If there was an English version of 'Cheers' it might be here..
Beer still excellent, need more drinkers so we can get more beer on,,get down there on those cold winter evenings and have a great beer with good company and a real fire which will be lit most nights as the landlord feels the cold.
This pub is the best example of what a pub should be, with great atmosphere especially if you are a real ale fan. Very friendly staff and landlord who always make me and my friends feel welcome, that's why we keep going back there when ever we can. You should try this if you enjoy a pint or two.
been using the Wheatsheaf regularly for 5 or so years now - Beer is consitently superb, as is the freshly prepared food at lunch! Even us smokers are catered for now with one of the best shelters I've seen in the Garden!!!! Highly recommended!!!!
DTR2K - 12 Sep 2008 16:08 |
Really enjoyed our 3rd visit of the Cricket season to this place and the Ale as always was TOP NOTCH. Goodens Gold from Flowerpots was the pick of the 7 that were on but also Whitear from the same Brewery and Skew Gold both deserve positive inclusions. Lovely, warm atmosphere and I thoroughly recommend it. Will return with my GF in due course.
Excellent pub with a good range of superbly conditioned beers. Especially the Goodens Gold! Really enjoy the garden and the staff and locals are all very welcoming. Well worth a visit.
Still turning out a good pint.
Excellent quality ales,Food standard fair. The small garden was wll kept and overall a very pleasant experience.
Coach visit here after our visit to the excellent Bowman Brewery. Excellent Skew ale sampled, staff and landlord friendly, even gave Big Baz a free pint just for watering 1 hanging basket. If we hadn't of been on a tight schedule could have spent an entire afternoon here.
Amazing pub. Good conversation among the clientele (even if your not a regular you are included). Food delicious and all homemade on the premises.
Smoking shelter in the back garden with quaint wood burner (perfect for the cold winter evenings). Good prices and perfect real ale poured straight from the barrel.
All in all a lovely pub and with an open fire a cosy and enjoyale atmosphere a perfect pub to spend time in.
And as for the comments about the landlord and landlady and staff I found them all friendly and helpful.
I hope many other people enjoy an evening in this delightful country pub as i did.
anonymous - 1 Dec 2007 01:34 |
Love the beers straight from the barrel behind the bar and always in superb condition. The food is excellent as well. I just wish the landlord and landlady would SMILE !!! and be a litle more friendly. Still a great pub.
whitsun beer festival was a resounding success despite the weather. over 35 beers on offer from some of the best small independent breweries, including crouch vale brewers gold! GREAT WEEKEND!
anonymous - 8 Jun 2007 00:07 |
Fantastic traditional pub with great locally made beer plus guest ales. Great atmosphere and a good crowd, These type of pubs are getting thin on the ground now, with all the euro fizz about. Roll on 1st July
Only me ! Great friendly pub - looking forward to the 1st July though. I drink wine, and lots of it. When they changed the supplier I was the first to be consulted as to which one I preferred. Luckily it was the same as the Landlord and Landlady chose. Hurrah for Sauvignon Blanc !
All the regulars are mad and from Mars. Come and join us !
Im sure most landlords get fed up with people who take there time getting there change out. Who cares about that when the food is excellent and the beer top quality whether you like winter or summer ales there is normaly a good range , assuming it has not all been drunk.
@ Mike Oxhard. How do you know which one is the landlord at the Wheatsheaf? Is he the one with the asthma, or the one with lots of other customers to serve? Most of us 'regulars' like the full range of beers available fom porter, hardly a 'summer' drink, through medium coloured mid-strngth beers to the 5% blonde bitters, that could perhaps be called 'summer ales'. Although if you actually knew anything about beer, particularly bitter beer, you would know that 'ale' is a beer brewed without hops.
Good beer (if you like summer ales), good food.
Landlord has attitude problem giving loud sighs if you take more than a millisecond to sort out your hard-earned cash before giving it to him.
Show some respect to people who are giving you money, whether they're a regular or not.
An excellent traditional pub with an impressive selection of cask ales on offer, all in excellent condition. Lunchtime food is delicious, the music on a saturday is great but really it's all about the beer and the chat.
anonymous - 25 Jul 2006 16:12 |
As no one else has passed comment The Wheatsheaf goes from strength to strength with excellent blues and jazz on Saturday nights. Range of beers remains impressive and the landlord says he is not miserable!!
A small, friendly, two bar, country pub with parking in surfaced field opposite. Good selection of local beers served from stillage behind bar. Dogs on leads allowed in public bar. Children allowed in enclosed garden. Home cooked food at lunchtimes only. Unspoilt by piped music, juke box, gaming machines, pool tables and the like. This is a pub for conversation and really good beer. Traditional scrumpy cider also available.
