user reviews of the Knott Bar, Deansgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Consistently excellent. I have had a couple of ales by Dan's Brewery on my last couple of visits (including the very pleasant IPA 58). Had the roast beef here one Sunday a few months back and it was really tasty - set me up for an afternoon of shopping with the other half! Handy for the train station too.
RealAleRobUK - 5 May 2017 16:38
Excellent range of real ales with staff who help out if you are unsure. A taster is always offered and I always like that. Food is very good so that's another plus for me. Can get really busy so get yourself there early.
T.Jones - 6 Oct 2015 18:26
Visited on a recent Friday afternoon before it got too crowded, whilst waiting for a train. 8 hand pumps, of which 7 were on. A chalk board sits behind the bar listing the ales and their strengths and prices.

I went for a pint of Hop #256 by Saltaire Brewery, 5% and set me back £3.55. Very hoppy and refreshing, just what I was hoping for.

Due to my train being delayed I had the unexpected pleasure of being able to stay for a second pint. This time the Black Shire Stout at 4.5% and priced at £3.30 for the pint. Not as thick a stout as I was expecting, but pleasant enough.

Always worth a visit due to the vast selection of real ales available and reasonable prices. Only struggle sometimes is getting a seat when it's busy.
RealAleRobUK - 12 May 2015 11:52
I really enjoy the Knott. We've been here twice. The first time we had food which was delicious and washed down with a Monkeytown Mild. The second time I had a Blackjack beer, which was also good.

It's always nice to have a range of top quality local beers on tap, and a large selection of bottled imports. The price is a bit steep though, but it's worth it every once in a while.
georgefox - 28 Sep 2014 16:25
Always a great selection of real ales to be had in here, never had a pint that disappointed me and there is often something a bit quirky such as a ginger ale or a chocolate stout. Getting a seat can be a bit of a struggle sometimes, and that's on a Saturday afternoon so can only assume it gets a lot busier in the evening. Food always looks nice enough though I have never eaten here myself. Well worth a visit!

This is one of those Manchester bars I have been meaning to get around too for a while. Yesterday, we had around 20 minutes before heading to the football ground and paid the Knott Bar a brief visit. It's a modern-looking bar which was busy, but had plenty of staff to cope with the custom. Quite a few people were eating and the kitchen can be seen from the end of the bar. But we were here for the beer. Old pumpclips on the walls indicate the extensive range they have stocked. Yesterday they had Pictish Cluster, Hardknott Cool Fusion, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Black Jack Stout, Tomos Watkin OSB, Buxton Kinder Downfall & Derby Hop Til' You Drop. There is also a good selection of more unusal keg and bottled options. No real cider was on offer. But they do normally have Addlestones on a handpull. Seemingly the best place for a beer in the Deansgate area.
blue_scrumpy - 11 Feb 2013 20:10
Easily the best pub in Manchester! Good choice of ales including from local micros, which I have never found to be in anything other than superb condition. The food is excellent also and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
stfc81 - 19 Feb 2012 12:32
Decent choice of ales, and a decent (albeit limited) food menu which, fairly unusually for Manchester city centre pubs, is served until 8pm. Just across the road from Deansgate station.
alexw - 31 Dec 2011 20:46
We liked it. Characterful given that it's relatively new, the beers were excellent choice or 4 or 5. Staff also very pleasant and helpful.
It appears that the days of good-value beer in Manchester are long gone, most places seem to be just behind London prices.
The food was fine veg chilli 6.50, goulash 8.50, but I wouldn't call it cheap or excessively large portions.
Worth a call in anyway; we'd go back.
Richardhuddleston - 29 Dec 2011 11:08
It looks like a student bar, it charges grown-up prices but its food and beer are worth it. Off-pitch but next to Deansgate BR, it seemed to be a lively convivial place without any arseh*les flashing cash or staring you out - and that's what a pub should be like. The Marble Stout was beyond great....
pkrp - 18 Dec 2011 00:30
This is one of my favourite pubs in the country. In a nice setting next to Deansgate Station, the pub has an open terrace upstairs.

A great beer selection, usually at least 6 or 7 real ales on offer. Also a good selection of foreign beers which suits my wife as she is a fruit beer fan.

The food is second to none. Good value and really tasty. Had a pie last time I was there and it was one of the nicest I have had. They also do a great Sunday Roast.

The only downer was the state of the toilets. However last time I went it did seem they had refurished them. They could still do some work on the stairs as the carpet is extremley tired.

I won't detract though, it's a great pub!!!
rwjc22 - 18 Nov 2011 17:25
Lovely pub! A bit tatty round the edges now but in a charming way. The beer is a little on the pricey side but the food is great value for huge hearty portions (you need to butterfly the burger to fit it in your mouth!)
realalegal - 21 Oct 2011 21:18
One of my favourite pubs in Manchester. Love the open balcony which is strangely relaxing givenits location. Varying range of beers with the regulars being their own Manchester Bitter and the (now no longer organic) Ginger Marble.
As per most pubs in the locality, prices are in the 3+ bracket. Strangely, their own Ginger Marble is 3.10 per pint but yet the Southampton Arms in London can sell it at 2.95. Makes you wonder how much profit they make on it. Have never been able to fault the quality of the beers though and they will let you try before you buy. Very often have beers from Pictish and Abbeydale breweries.
FrankW - 26 Sep 2011 00:42
Came in here for the first time in a very long while. Christ I nearly had a heart attack when she said 3 for a pint of "bitter" from the marble brewery. Tried Harvester from the Acorn Brewery which was very pleasing on the palate. Unfortunately the same couldn't be said about "Easy Riders", it was just lacking in flavour.

This pub has won the best pub award for two consecutive years from camra. Personally speaking I think it is more of a mixed bag of overly priced ale with show offs coming in to reveal their wealth. The food however remains the strongest selling point of this establishment.

realalerules1983 - 1 Sep 2011 13:17
Update on the toilets. The Gents has been completely renovated and re-opened for business. Somehow it's become more spacious though the walls haven't moved, it's just that the urinals and wash basin are better placed. Work continues on the Ladies and great things are promised.

The bar now boasts seven handpumps, six for ale and one for cider. An eighth pump is planned when they can get another beer line installed (unusually the cellar is actually overhead, which complicates the plumbing; personally I would just let it run down by gravity but some folk like a head on their beer).
Dean_Lane - 17 Aug 2011 20:32
Went here on Sunday. Always a good selection of real ale, all seemed to be from micro's, and my wife even found a fruit beer she liked.

The food here is superb, I had a really nice Lamb roast which didn't hold back on portion size and good value at 8.50. My wife had a good facachio Club sandwich.

Agree with an ealrier post, the toilets leave a lot to be desired. If they were better it would get a higher rating from me.
rwjc22 - 24 May 2011 15:33
A bar that resembles an industrial unit, situated underneath the railway line, although the arches are modishly impressive in a Victorian way. Beers available from Pictish, Marble and Exmoor, none were sampled as i opted for some Belgian beauties at just under four pound a bottle.

Very modern and gloomy and definitely aimed at the younger, trendier set of hipsters. The gents leave a lot to be desired!
nokegthanks - 6 Jan 2011 22:37
This bar is spot on. The only fault I can find is they ran out of two light beers at the same time, leaving only the stronger ales available. But they were beautifully kept. Straddles being a real ale pub and a nice modern bar perfectly. Excellent,. 10/10
dry_riser_inlet - 7 Nov 2010 13:53
Fantastic place if you're after decent beer on this side of town. The setting (underneath an arch surrounded by railways and canals) tends to divide people. The decor and ambience (which could be described as having a charm of its own) however fortunately tends to dissuade the shots and bottles crowd that maraud along Deansgate locks opposite! The quality of food available has always been more than decent with an interesting selection on the menu plus specials. However I think it would be fair to suggest grabbing a butty en route if you are absolutely starving as the wait for food can sometimes be a fair while. Considering that the kitchen appears to cook everything fresh to order, I think this is a fair compromise. Service has never been anything but friendly, efficient and attentive. And as is right for any pub in Manchester, the Jukebox is absolutely top notch (no soppy ballads or 140bpm eurodance remixes here). Always a good mixed crowd of business types, students, creative bods, locals, and even men with beards scoring halves. Definitely one of my favourite places to drink in Manchester city centre.
slipdigby - 11 Oct 2010 11:54
Nice ambiance, great beer and good food. Unfortunately, we had a *very* long wait for the latter on a quiet Wednesday lunchtime. , so I'd think twice before going there to eat again.

The women's toilets left a lot to be desired. They were clean enough (although they might have a go at the graffiti), but of the two cubicles, one had a a broken lock, and the other a faulty door handle. The electric hand-dryer didn't work and there were no paper towels.

Popped into this rather trendy place last Friday lunchtime after receiving a tip from a local. A few fantastic real ales and the food looked delicious ( we had already eaten ). Not big, so is probably packed in the evenings. The Marble Arch on the other side of town is still my favourite pub in Manchester!
daidolj - 5 Aug 2010 19:35
As in my earlier post about this place I had the Hot and Spicy epicurian last night. It was again excellent for quality and value for money. 10 for a 3 course meal which included starters of ribs in a sweet chlli sauce, mains of a whole chicken breast marinated in tikka, beef chilli, lamb vindaloo and a veggie curry all served with aromatic rice. They did have a fish curry but I gave it a miss as I dont like fish. The dessert consisted of a mouth cleansing sorbet.

My luck was in aswell as they had one of my favourite stouts on 'Titanic's Vanilla and Chocolate Stout'! Excellent flavours.
realalerules1983 - 21 Jul 2010 11:25
Fascinating little diamond is how I best describe this place! Quality real ale backed up with top notch food cooked by the ledgendary OZ.

p.s. The Hot and Spicy nights are awesome.
realalerules1983 - 25 May 2010 13:19
Comfortably the best beer of my Manchester trip, with the Marble Bitter being a particular highlight. Very good selection of Belgian's too; had a nice Chimay Triple to finish. Lamb burger was excellent and unfinishably well-proportioned.
JonW999 - 3 May 2010 17:06
Nipped in for a couple prior to the Gill Scott-Heron concert - good selection of ales, reasonable price - for a place with a glass frontage it does seem very dark though - my companion mentioned that the ladies toilet was mingin.
kernott1 - 2 May 2010 07:03
Renowned CAMRA award-winning bar nestled in a railway arch near Deansgate station and in rustic Lancashire scenery- canals, arches and cobbled streets in abundance. It's open plan and slightly bohemian, with the haphazard posters redolent of a student pub. The front has glazed windows all the way and affords good views. It used to have a bar billiards table but no longer, sadly.
2-3 Marble Beers are always on sale here, and the Ginger I tried was top notch as ever. Also 3 guests, i tried the Hawkshead Red which was also excellent. The pub is renowned for its pub grub and gets very busy at the weekend.
Not much more to add that hasn't already been said other than that this is easily the best pub in the area, and the one to go to if waiting for a train at Deansgate.
Carlurmston - 25 Jan 2010 12:26
Usual visit to one of favourite watering holes in Manchester. Beers on were excellant - Pictish Warrior in particular. Not as busy as usual but last Saturday was a filthy day. The Chicken Chorizo stew was its usual excellant self!
Very handy for the tram stop, free trams last Saturday (very useful in the driving rain and gales), so managed to get from Knott Bar to the Angel in the northern quarter in under 10 minutes - a record?
bloomfieldjpm - 17 Nov 2009 05:02
Went in here following a crawl round the M4 pubs (Smithfield, Bar Fringe, Crown and Kettle, Marble Arch, The Angel). Decent pub with the trains rumbling overhead as its built into Deansgate Bridge. The several ales that wed had in the M4 area prior to arriving at this place had taken effect, so whilst the beer seemed good, we were past it at this point! Good mix of customers, lots of ale to choose from and all in all one to try. Well probably start here next time in order to get a better feel for the place.
Mothbag - 11 Nov 2009 13:21
Popped in for a quick drink on Tuesday before going for a meal at the excellent Choice. Was pleasantly surprised. Had a lovely wine (think it was the chardonnay given the descriptions on the board). Plenty of Utd fans in ahead of that evening's match. The food coming from the kitchen smelled lovely and the mix of people was quite nice. Would definitely go in again - the traisns rumbling overhead were quite interesting too!
whatsoever - 5 Nov 2009 09:38
I'm glad to report this place is still excellent. There was a beer festival on during our weekend visit, and it was drunk dry by thirsty rugby league fans. Excellent location right on Deansgate, I particularly enjoyed getting stuck into Veltins. Top drawer.
ChrisP87 - 24 Oct 2009 12:24
Great place! staff are really friendly and welcoming, there is nothing they wont do! The food is pub style chips/burger but fresh and home made, the bugers were made from real mince and tasted incredible! i ordered with jalaoeno peppers expecting sliced and layed in the bun, but instead pot of 6 fresh jalapeno peppers was served! very impressed, would deffinulty recommend this place to anyone. Forgot to mention the amazing array of beers, ales!
pub_rater - 17 Sep 2009 09:41
Smashing place, loads of character. Only downside is that I didn't spot the real cider they had on tap on my last visit until it was too late......!
jeff1637 - 16 Aug 2009 19:10
Great place, with a smart bar feel but not poncey and great selection of real ale, always featuring a good number of the Marple Brewery ales and some interesting guests from other local micros.Having spent lunchtime quaffing in the Marble Arch ,we carried on here on the Ginger Marble and Coach and Horses from Millstone.,which were top notch.Lively atmosphere, efficient young bar staff and a mixed age group clientele this is a great place to get boozing. Can get very busy if a concert finishes in the nearby arena.
Bucking_Fastard - 13 Aug 2009 17:38
I second bloomfieldjpm on the Chicken and Chorizo stew. It's also the best place for real ale in Manchester I've discovered so far, and the staff are always handy with a recommendation. I mostly come in here afternoons to do a bit of work over a pint, and it's fantastic, friendly and quiet except for a few students and the other freelancer tapping away on their laptop. Gets pretty rammed and noisy in the evenings though.
blueporcupine - 5 Aug 2009 18:36
CAMRA manchester pub of the year 2009 and rightly so, a good variety of real ales on, good selection of bottled beers, some you'll know and a few you won't. Again, this was an afternoon visit so i can't comment on how busy this place gets but i'm guessing by previous reviews that it's very popular, which you can easily see why. I'll definitely be visiting here again next time i visit Manchester
ra1nw1zard - 28 Jul 2009 18:09
Had a couple of first class pints of Prospect sat on the balcony here recently, bar service was spot on and the place has lots of atmosphere.
A must if you are in the area.
boltonbloke - 17 Jul 2009 20:33
Still one of the best drinking places in Manchester. The food, now tried since last review, is top notch - the Chicken & Chorizo stew is worth a particular mention.
Great selection on my last visit - Titanic, Millstone, 2 from Marble, Prospect
bloomfieldjpm - 23 Jun 2009 05:30
Made my first visit last year and loved the place. Ever changing guest ales which were of great quaility (loved the Hornbean Lemon blossom) and during my time up in Manchester i can recmmend the food. Visited again this year and its still great...funny how my meetings end just as this gem opens!!

47458sf - 21 May 2009 16:13
Agree with everything ROBcamra says - a great pub/bar fully 1 minute's walk from Deansgate train and tram stations.
NellySays - 15 Feb 2009 13:09
Great pub serving Marble Brewery beers and a couple of guests often from Pictish and Phoenix. Always a friendly welcome but can get very busy on Friday/Saturday nights. Always a well kept pint, also has draft Belgian beers. The spicy wedges are great, especially with a sweet chilli dip. One of our regular haunts in Manchester. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.
ROBCamra - 13 Jan 2009 12:05
I was very impressed with this place and will undoubtedly be returning. A fine selection of ales and foreign beers all at very decent prices really. Sitting on the roof terrace, inspite of the close proximity to the railway line, was very pleasant.
ChrisP87 - 9 Oct 2008 14:22
A fine bar. I was comfortably ensconsced here with my regulation G&T whilst my dreamy hunk Basil was waiting for some of his friends from his Naval days. The decor is good, the trains rattling overhead actually add ambience and the menu appears most interesting although we haven't yet had chance to sample it. In summer the balcony is pleasant, too.

Basil is most impressed by the selection of beers - being owned by the Marble brewery it always has some good pints including the rather alcoholic ginger beer, even if it's not a pint he'd wish to have all the time.

After a few G&Ts and beers things became a bit hazy. Basil's friends turned up and introduced me to something called 'sambuca'. I remember getting home myself in the early hours, and vague memories of a mass of writhing bodies thereafter. The following morning I awoke with a pounding headache, covered in seamen.

I am most cross with those navy boys, don't they know I'm trying to be a lady?
RosemaryAndBasil - 15 Sep 2008 01:59
This is an excellent bar and one I always try to visit when I am in manchester.

The range of real ales is good and they are always well kept. Service is friendly. I haven't had a reason to eat there, but the menu looks good.

Excellent musical tates as well.
alexw123 - 7 Apr 2008 18:12
Sister pub to the excellent 'The Bar' in Chorlton.
Best place in the vicinity by a long way. It does attract the deansgate crowd though. Brilliant beer choice both in bottles and real ale. Nice roof terrace in summer
Scottie_chorlton - 11 Mar 2008 18:33
Another excellant place in Manchester, and another place I visit when in the city. Good foreign beers and real ales (usually always from Manchester brewers). Opens late. Never tried the food but it looks n smells good.
Have found some of the staff a bit upselves at times.
bloomfieldjpm - 18 Nov 2007 06:42
One of the best pubs I've ever been to. Low key, good music, a fine selection of beers on tap, both of the real and lagered kind, and with a selection of lagers well beyond Stella and Heineken and not in anyone's face. A little gem surrounded by another nightclub mile. My only complaint is that the trams are that reliable!
foffo_spearjig - 11 Jul 2007 19:58
Excellent bar, always head for here whenever up Manc.Good juke box as well if on the low side volume wise. (i'm not one for loud music in bars unless it's to my taste).Good selection of ales.
Tippler - 11 Jul 2007 02:13
What a great pub. Ignore Atlas across the road and come and have a lovely real ale or a speciality Belgian or German beer. Probably the best city centre pub in Manchester.
Expat_Mat - 29 Dec 2006 09:48
Beer and food very good. A nice escape from the 'usual' Deansgate.
wobblybob - 27 Dec 2006 03:14
I fully expected this to be one of those places that's so far up its own arse it could talk out of its navel. I was very, very wrong. This is a friendly, quirky gem of a bar - I've always had an excellent evening here and have yet to have a bad pint.

On a summer's evening standing on the balcony upstairs, pint in hand watching the world go by is a delight.
EFC1878 - 3 Dec 2006 10:09
Three years since my first comment on this place and it's still as good as ever. The kitchen moved to the back of the bar a while ago (it was too small where it was at the front) and since then they've added an extra real ale to the lineup and created a no-smoking area at the back (mainly for those having food).

The only downside is the blinding fluorescent lighting in the toilets and up the back stairs now. What happened to the nice spotlights?

Long may the Knott continue! :o)
roobarb_ - 20 Oct 2006 13:46
one of the best pubs/bars in manchester, good beer, good jukebox, good atmosphere, good tables! its just a shame its near the deansgate locks bars
henrytetlow - 29 Sep 2006 13:12
This is one of the best pubs in town, hard to think of anywhere with wider range of beers. Great crowd, a real mix - the odd time I've seen the ex-bassist from the Smiths in. The ace jukebox is still here as well.
kball68 - 15 Aug 2006 23:13
good beer in the fridge and on tap and nice food to boot bit small but hey you learn to deal.
scootini83 - 9 May 2006 21:47
love this place, though apparently its been refurbed and ive not been since. But went there a few times last year great beer, staff, food and ambiance! I hear the wonderful jukie has now gone.. i hope not
bazrox - 13 Mar 2006 18:37
I think this pub is great, when I last went there I was tired so Emma who works there gave me a nice smelly blanket to sleep on, and there were loads of other nice dogs there and a water bowl. My human friends like the beer (especially Lagonda IPA when it's available) and it's a brilliant pub especially when it's not full of yuppies.
rosa_the_terrier - 2 Feb 2006 19:22
Bring back the old landlord Knoxy - he really knew how to run this place!
Bigaudio - 25 Jan 2006 22:12
We went to this bar last week, never been before i really enjoyed it!!

Great!!

WakeyGirl - 13 Jan 2006 13:30
Decent selection of beers, both bottle and on pump. Interesting location (under the arches) I agree with malone in so far as its not a "classic" pub, rather more "trendy" than that...however, for what it is it is a friendly and pleasant place. Personally I prefer the more "traditional" or "authentic" pub, but for a rather fashionable bar it exceeds expectation by a long way.
bensonby - 16 Dec 2005 21:45
I'm surprised at the last posting, the Knott is a very friendly boozer with a mix of great characters and a superb range of well-kept ales. Can get very crowded though on the weekend.
kball68 - 11 Dec 2005 16:16
A disappointment. Neglected bar billiards table, irritating staff, not particularly convivial feel. Best avoided, and going to much more atmospheric pubs round the corner, such as Peveril of the Peak or Britons Protection.
malone - 23 Sep 2005 16:02
I'm a great fan of all the Marble pubs, but unfortunately this was a great let down. The staff were unfriendly and hogged the Bar Billiards table the whole time, leaving it for five minutes at a time whilst they went to serve someone, but telling customers they couldn't use it! A greasy smell hung in the air, and the general atmophere lacked the great vibe that other Marble pubs offer.
anonymous - 16 Sep 2005 19:43
The Knott is in an ideal position and attracts a mixed clientelle but it just needs a few quid spending on the furniture. Two wonky chairs and about 50 uncomfortable stools!!! Billiard table was rotten too. On a more positive note it's CAMRA affilliated and serves a very nice Marble Breweries ginger-based ale
robsonholt - 7 May 2005 17:53
excellent selection of beers.nicely chilled out place for a daytime beer or two.
kierandinan - 12 Feb 2005 15:58
Good pub with a selection of real ales and a wide selection of Belgium and German beers, both on draught and bottled. Food available, well worth seeking out.
Simon - 15 Sep 2004 08:52
One of the best Pubs in the city.

Staff are Good and The place has got a true 'Homely Vibe' for the discerning Manc...
9.9/10

The Knott is great they have posters of the Ramones and they serve all fancy beers and the people that go in there are hippies/bikers/yuppies/smart arses/camra/southerners/crusties/ punks/couples/intellectuals
ex Knott bar-man - 17 May 2004 20:02
Agreed, ChrisW, I've noticed it's getting busier... Hmm, I guess I'm just going to have to start going earlier... ;o)
Andy - 20 Apr 2004 09:42
DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB!

It's a great place, I drink there all the time, and the last thing I want is a queue at the bar and nowhere to sit down.
ChrisW - 15 Apr 2004 14:47
I agree with the comments below, great range of beer including a fantastic strawberry beer on tap.
Nige - 9 Apr 2004 13:54
Quick update - this bar is just as superb as it's always been (although the removal of the sofas at the front are a sad loss). New chef and the food is still spot on - look out for the specials written on the front of the open kitchen, to the right of the bar. Lish. :o)
Andy - 11 Feb 2004 13:27
This bar is brilliant, it's not cheap but the selection of beers is great, they have many Dutch and German beers on tap and in bottles. It has a jukebox, which is always good and the seating is comfy. It's also a great location, close to the real centre of town, also Castlefield is near by, as is Deansgate locks, the Comedy Store etc.
Craig - 16 Oct 2003 13:26
Serves a great selection of choice imported beers, both on draught and bottled. Also serves the Marble breweries own brands (including the wonderful Ginger Marble), with a varied and changing selection of handpulls.

The food is second-to-none, and reasonably priced for what you receive - certainly some of the best bar food in the city.

Coupled with the comfortable surroundings and balcony for summer evenings, this is a great place to meet up with friends and enjoy a drink.
Andy - 6 Jun 2003 15:58
Recently purchased by Marble Brewery (they also own Bar Fringe). Great range of hand-pulled ales and continentals, in much the same style of Fringe. Great food, but only served till 8 or earlier. Quite small and slightly pricey for Manchester, but then it isn't a student pub.
