Absolutely dire pub - with low calibre staff, awful beer and poor hygiene standards.
Interest has been lost by the owners, as the building and location are both good.
DSS type customers, in the main. Avoid.

A very disappointing experience despite the place being more or less deserted on Derby Day with the race on TV!
The bar staff were hard to attract, and then poured the wrong drink before insisting that they were right. Tables went uncleared for more than twenty minutes after customers left.
It's a shame the bar staff let the place down as this is a good place for real ale normally - 5 on offer tomorrow.

The 'Spoons' Post and Telegraph just up the road was absolutely rammed Saturday afternoon, so tried this pub instead. It was certainly a lot quieter and more relaxing here.
Five hand pumps on the bar promises a good selection of real ales. Sadly though, two were waiting to settle in the cellar. Green King IPA occupied two pumps (I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole) and the fifth pump had Adnams Kristal White - unfortunately a wheat beer (never had a nice one yet - and still not).
The was one nice beer though. The last time I had a keg beer was over ten years ago - because they are awful. This one was Meantime's London Pale Ale. Slightly cold and gassy, as expected, but tasted very good - and so it should do at over £4 a pint!!!
Food wise: Mitchell and Butler menu. Extensive choice, cheap and Wetherspoon standard.........oh well. Overall, a quiet 'Spoons' without the beer.

Visited this pub late Tuesday afternoon. Not very busy, but it was a quiet time anyway. Guinness was ok, but this pub need a complete overhall. The gents loo was disgusting, no paper towels and the smell of the urinals crept out and into the pub. The tables were sticky. I would not eat here if it was free! Will not return

A point well made Alex..but what about the beer then?. After all it's "Beerintheevening" not , pissed off with the food in the evening!!! Get a bloody grip!

Went here for food attracted by the low prices. Took away a feeling of being cheated and exasperated by bad serviced.
Let downs: I wasn't able to get a vegetarian burger on the "2 meals for 6" I told the barmaid that I would instead have the "burger and drink for 4.89" deal and could I please have the veggie burger. She ran through the order without telling me that the veggie burger cost extra and I did not realise this until checking my change later. When we asked for ketchup the staff member delivered an empty bottle.
Suggestions: If someone asks for the 4.89 veggie burger, but the veggie burger isn't part of this deal say something, don't just run the higher price through the till without confirming the order. Make the menu pricing clearer, specifically if your deal is "burger and drink from 4.89" do not hide the word from with an obscure typeface and tiny sized letters. In addition do place it next to a similar deal that uses the word "for" e.g. "any pizza for 5.00". Customers don't like feeling as if they have been tricked, just be upfront, clear and honest about your pricing.
The table next to us, served by the same staff member, also had service problems, they had to wait a very long time for their food. The excuse: "sorry, but our chef burnt the pizza(paraphrased)"
Both myself and my friend will not be paying another visit

Looking great now - must of had a refurb here. Service has got much better and the place looks great again. I think its under new management and it shows. A great atmosphere with the live music. Worth a visit?

Cheap drinks for Brighton - always had a good laugh in here.

It you feel like catching something .. I have only been in there once and have heard a lot about the place from other people, all agreeing: This is such a dump!

Music was too loud, but cheap drinks so can't complain

All of the previous comments are true but it's cheap so it will allways be full of students.
|
Possibly the slowest service in Brighton, even when they aren't bust. A pub for tourists who are looking for that 'sleazy' Brighton atmosphere rather than for locals.

Pav Tav as it's known is a dispiriting place, but upstairs does cheap discos that are popular with students and Brighton residents who refuse to grow up and get over the whole indy thing.

"Atmospheric", but in a negative way. Gloomy, scruffy, indifferent barstaff. Pool tables are a plus, I suppose, but on the whole it's not much fun.
