Sitting outside the counter, a bored and loudmouthed barmaid yesterday moaned about her job - on her phone. My visit was brief, and my drink pricey.

Visited the Victory on a trip to Brighton in October. It sounds like we had a better experience than Little Drummer Boy. The ale range was Hepworth Red Export, Dark Star Festival & Laine Bestest Bitter. Ciders were Orchard Pig The Hogfather & Weston's Old Rosie. A nice old pub with an L-shaped interior that had a nice atmosphere. I'd come back.
The all too ubiquitous Doom Bar and Old Speckled Hen were on the only beers on the bar when we called in here. Two other pump clips were turned around. Bloody useless staff. Ordered just a pint of each of the aforementioned beers and had to remind the young lad behind the bar THREE times which ones I wanted - despite them being the only ales on! Too busy having conversations amongst themselves I think. Wouldn’t recommend and don’t know why it’s in the CAMRA GBG to be honest.
A nice pub with 4 fairly unusual ales on tap. We were a bit put off by a very peculiar woman who came in & eventually sat down, consumed 2 bottles of water which she''d brought in with her then eventually left. The staff seemed unconcerned, probably knew her. I''d guess that she might have been on drugs? Very odd, the sort of person you steer clear of in case they pull out a knife and stab you. They do food here but it''s either vegetarian, vegan, gluten free or possibly all three. Nothing normal.

CAMRA discount available so beer was £3.35 a pint. Comfortable pub with good food. Could do with a little clean up to make it a bit more shipshape.
4 quid for a pint of a very iffy ale recently. I'll add this to my list of pubs not to go back to. Only thing I could say in its favour is that its dog friendly.
Dark; bit grim; has the feel of a big brewery-run pub.
But you can't deny that it reeks of history - lots of characters have passed through these doors and its location means that there'll always be something going on here.
Beer was just fine and there was a decent selection to choose from.
Went in yesterday and ordered a pint of Pin UP Honey Brown. Claimed my 50p CAMRA discount and went and set down with my beer. The beer was cloudy so I waited for it to setle down, when it didn't I took it back to the bar and asked for it to be changed. Straight away a voice in the corner said it had just been put on and it was fine. He poured himself a small dop, smelt it and said it was fine. It wasn't, I left it on the bar and walked out. VERY POOR BEER and VERY POOR SERVICE. AVOID.

On our first visit to Brighton recently this was the first pub we visited and became our "local" for the rest of our stay. Despite comments in previous posts, we found the bar staff very friendly, and the range of beers excellent and well kept. I got stuck in to the Pin-up Milk Stout and Sarah went for the Citra - both dangerously drinkable. Proper ciders too, and a good menu - the "Famous Fish Finger Sandwich" was delicious and filling, so much so that we had to postpone our planned meal out that evening. The pub is nicely unspoilt, with a panelled public bar and a larger area with more comfy seating. Well worth a visit.
Lovely pub this one. Nice guinness and ales for my friend. In the lanes,so busy, service fair. Plenty of gaylords,as a previous poster put it.:-)
Very expensive (for tourists) and mediocre; barstaff just come and go, frequently.
Unfortunately this establishment suffers from that common problem epidemic in the Brighton area. That being too many Gaylords!
A little pricey, even with the very welcome benefit of the CAMRA 50p discount still means a pint is over 3. Nevertheless, quality and service is above average - the South Downs Brewery's Devils Dyke Porter was a beer I hadn't tasted before and very good it was too.
A discount for CAMRA members so that was a good start! Yes, it attracts tourists being in The Lanes but we didn't wait too long to get served and we found an upstairs table immediately. The Anchor Spring's Hornblower was yet another pint that I had never tried before. I would certainly visit again.

Was in Brighton yesterday with a group of workmates. 5 couples and 3 single men. The oldest being 56, the youngest being 30. Real ale and wine drinkers, average age about 40. They refused to serve us as they said they did not serve groups. I asked them what size is a group, they told me 5, yet there was a party of 8 drinking outside. I really liked this pub and I'd organised a pub crawl with this pub being one of the highlights, now I will never visit it again. 13 of us all with money to spend, all worked out OK as we just went to another pub and gave them our money instead.
Still a decent pub the beer is ok but the gents toilets are like the bathroom in a crackhouse.
Agency staff....like many in the Lanes. Good and bad - the owners know service quality is not important. Only profit. About 20% more expensive than those pubs nearby. Hygiene levels low (agency) - ever seen the governor? He/she is agency too......a sad lottery.
Have to say I'm surprised at the recent postings - when we were there last Friday, the staff were charming and friendly, and even recommended other good pubs in the area to follow on to. Haven't got a bad word to say about the place!
Agree with previous posts that this pub is expensive. Don't mind paying a bit extra if the place is worth it but this one certainly isn't. Did get my pint topped up but it was done very grudgingly. The barmaid gave the same grumpy service to everyone as far as I could see. I understand that working on New Years Day must be a pain but if you don't want to be polite just keep the pub shut and let the customers go somewhere else. 4 Sussex ales available and my pint was fine but the impression left by the staff does not encourage me to return in a hurry.
The exterior is very striking with green and cream tiles and original stained glass. Always a good selection of mainly local ales (Kings, Hepworth, Dark Star etc). Best described as "homely" and yes, the loos were poor and the tables were a bit grubby and sticky. There's a lot of local competition so I think they will lose trade to the bigger pubs nearby.
I was one of a group of 11 middle-aged men enjoying our annual day out touring the Brighton pubs. This place refused to serve us - at around 2pm on a Saturday! We were not a bunch of drunken yobs. I've never had such rude and appalling treatment in a pub. This dump is off our list forever. They can kiss goodbye to a lot of future business. There are plenty of excellent pubs in Brighton so avoid this one!
Expensive - even for the lanes. Micbinks is spot on.
Expensive, dated, grubby loos together with surly staff means there's no way this pub can be recommended, but then it was very busy on a hot summer's day thronging with tourists. That shouldn't be an excuse though, other places manage just fine.
Nice place and worth the time to sup a couple if you are in the area. I tried and managed to exhaust the supply of Brighton Blonde, a very drinkable 3.8. @3.50 a pint. Bit more than I am used to but par for the course in the area. Plenty of local colour outside, but a bit quiet on the inside. Finished with a very acceptable burger and chips, nothing special but nothing to complain about either.
Can't say we found the beers expensive (but if you will drink so-called foreign fizzy pops then serves you right). Good range of local real ales and a very friendly and chatty barmaid. Nice to see a real fire as well. Some fine architectural features not least the exterior signage which has sadly been a bit damaged over the years (some of the letters are not complete) Nice feel to the place and a welcome little stop-off whilst doing the touristy bit in this part of town.
Most expensive pub in the lanes area. Pint of Kronenburg - just under 4 and a double (50ml) vodka with a dash of coke - 6.30. Better and much cheaper pubs nearby.
Visited on our traditional Boxing Day visit to Brighton. Great little pub - 4 local guest ales and 2 real ciders plus excellent mulled wine and helpful staff!! Food looked very good too, but didn't eat. Will make a point of visiting whenever in town.
Visited this pub last weekend and have to say loved it. There was a cheese and cider theme so a wide range of great ciders. My wife and I were fortunate to be sat outside and enjoyed a half dozen or so lazy drinks in the sun on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, both times for no less than 4 or 5 hours.
The staff were lovely and friendly too.
Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet fame was there Saturday night for an hour or so with some pals, drinking the same cider as me (Cheddar Valley).
All in all, had a great experience there and will definitely go back when next in Brighton.
aS said good choice of beers plumed for the horsham best bitter choice of 3 footslogger also on . choice of two ciders , strongbow , thatchers heritage , the latter of which seemed quite popular with locals . Rare occasion as i actually did eat here , sort of standard pub menu , but very good . as said can get packed quickly . quaint pub .
Quite a good place, with a very good selection of beers (and some ciders). The food is good, but fairly simple. It can easily get very crowded.
We visited twice during our holiday in Brighton three weeks ago. Decent range of beers, including Dark Star, Arundel, Harveys and Theakstons Old Peculiar, bar staff seemed friendly enough and we had a cider chat with the licensee on our last visit. Would definately recommend!
A decent pub but best enjoyed when not rammed. a reasonable selection of drinks available certainly much better than that found on neighbouring west street! Staff can be a little cold and clearly not very enthusiastic. Good selection of ales as you will find in most drink in brighton pubs
Ordinarily I would seek to echo the generally positive flavour of recent contributors, but my last visit was something of a disappointment. The ale was on reasonable form and service was fine, although my mate and me were faced with a rather intimidating bunch of locals, who by and large turned out to be friendly enough (if a little intrusive - a few too many I think lads), but one bloke seemed to seriously piss the manager off and he promptly threw most of the customers out! We weren't specifically asked to leave the premises but given the sudden souring of the atmos we felt it was a wise move to step out voluntarily (fortunately it was a boiling hot day - not sure what we were doing indoors in the first place).
One could say it was memorable, but arguably for the wrong reasons. I only hope things are a little less tetchy at the Victory usually, on both sides of the bar.
Wonderful pub. Local ales change monthly, good selection of decently priced food which again changes frequently, staff are friendly, and although the pub gets more lively on weekend evenings with DJs and functions it's still quiet enough the rest of the time for some much needed R&R in the centre of Brighton. I come quite regularly and although it seems a shame more people don't make use of it I'm not actually sure I'd want that to change!
Had a lovely pint of ale here. Pub was spotless. Food decent, not the gourmet affair most pubs tend to be leaning to - honest hearty pub food - just as it says on the tin. Will be back.

Decent pint of a local ale in here. Also good food from the luchtime menu. Great place to just sit back & read the Sunday papers.
This has to be ones of the best places i been in a while, the ales were first rate and sourced locally, the staff were friendly and the building itself is extraordinary. It's covered in green tiles and has stained glass windows! The interior seems to have been preserved really well too with loads of original features. We didn't get chance to try the food, but the menu looked decent. If you're going to Brighton this place is a must visit.
Such a big pub with potential lovely outside sun trap area but a bit too near the book-makers in location and custom base (not always making a comfortable atmosphere!). It's a wee bit dirty inside customer service is lacking as often feels like staff are happier getting drunk than serving customers.
Empty when I visited at lunchtime, not very friendly and looked as if it hadn't been cleaned since the night before. Perhaps it feels it doesn't have to make an effort due to its central location. Still, the beer was OK, and it had a certain charm so i'll give it a 6.

Mediocre outlet. Good 'lanes' corner location - but could do a lot better. My visit (last Sunday week) was at lunchtime and the barman was barely polite and seemed bored of his job - and life ! The new Youngs' Seven Stars, just around the corner (where O'Neills was), will emphasise this pub's lack of ambition.
Have an Old Peculiar in here and go and make an impulsive cd purchase afterwards.
Polite service, decent beer and it gets an extra point from me because it's green on the outside.
Surprised this pub has such a high rating. Had a Harvey's which was a bit cloudy and tasted of metal. Seems to be a bit rough and bouncer controlled. Maybe I was just unlucky.
Harveys is nice in here. Pleasant decor perhaps geared towards tourists but a decent hostelry.
Pub was very close to our hotel so ended up having our last drinks in here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
Had Old Peculiar each time - very nice. Did not try the other 3 beers.
On Friday and Saturday the place was lively and the bouncer was turning a few people away. On Sunday night it was empty. Service was generally good and prices were OK.
Fine location... beer is ok but not as good as other pubs in town.
Could up its game a little maybe but worth a visit.
Popped in last Saturday afternoon whilst on a crawl round Brighton and the atmosphere was lively. The beer was OK.
It was a bit surreal to watch the 6 nations rugby on the TV to the soundtrack of Herbie Hancock and other jazz classics, whilst being surrounded by crowds of drinkers wearing those mad St Patrick's day Guiness hats.
The bar staff were efficient and friendly so that's good.
Looks very promising from the outside with its distinct green tiling. Nice layout on the inside with pleasant atmosphere and decent service.
Only down-side was I don't know what they'd done to the Old Peculiar. A one-off mistake I trust....
I would re-visit. My drinking partner and fellow troubadour was put off by the Old Peculiar so wouldn't.
best place in the south lanes if you fancy a sit down with a jacket spud or baguette. may i recommend roast veg & houmous.
Good pub, better than most in this part of B'ton. The extended area at the back is good for sitting around and socialising, and the general standard of food and drink is high. Does Niall the ex-barber still run this place? Top bloke.

Nice pub, decent interior and the Theakstons was in good nick.
