user reviews of the Queens Head, Allens Green

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Queen's Head was our first and favourite pub of the day in Hertfordshire yesterday. It has 2 rooms - a public bar and another room which was hosting a function yesterday. There had been a beer festival the previous weekend. The pub also has a fair sized garden to the side. Both landlord and staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Toilets are clean. The ale selection was Maldon Puck's Folly & The Hotel Porter, Mighty Oak Maldon Gold & Fullers London Pride. Ciders and perries were Westons Old Rosie, Rosie's Pig & Country Perry, Oakham Twisted Tree, Oaple & Orchard Reserve, Troggi Sweet, Johnsons Harry Masters, Cider By Rosie, Olivers Draught & Hartlands Farmhouse. A bit off the beaten track. But well worth the effort.

Excellent village pub which regularly features among the CAMRA Essex / Herts award winners. Four real ales were available, and I had an excellent couple of pints of Cassowary from the Tring brewery. Plenty of dog lovers were in the pub and there seems to be a supply of free dog biscuits on tap. A nice touch at the end of the evening was that the barman rushed outside with my jacket which I had inadvertently left behind on my seat. That's what I call customer care. If I lived a bit closer this would be one of my regular haunts.

Hi, great pub very clean with friendly staff, all beers tried were spot on and reasonable prices, range of ciders also good, tidy large garden and some parking. wish this was local.

Just revisited this page to see how the reviews are going since my first post back in 2005. This is my 'local' and is well worth the weekly trips, either by car, walking or cycling, depending on the weather.
Always has at least 3 ales on, either on the handpumps at the bar, or straight from the casks in the cellar. Maldon Gold is almost always on tap (and my beer of choice), together with London Pride, and a mild. Third weekend of the month mini beer fests continue, with 6-8 additional beers. Ciders and perries also an attraction.
The pub has been extended and now has a lovely conservatory overlooking the garden and the bar has been lengthened, with the aim of having casks directly at hand, rather than having to draw from them in the cellar, as at present.
August bank holiday coming up and the second major beer festival of the year at the Queen's Head will be a weekend for walking or cycling over, so that I can sample and enjoy the 15 or so ales that will be available - definitely something to look forward to, together with the BBQ and live music!

Beer festival on the Bank Holiday weekend plus BBQ and live music.

Mini-festivals on the third weekend of most months are a treat. Good range of bitters at other times plus Oscar Wild mild.

There should really be more pubs like this. Top beer in a good location, friendly place - a treat especially on a summer afternoon!

Took good note of the reviews and ensured that our visit was 3rd weekend, and rewarded with stills in the marquee offering Buntingford 92 Squadron, Oatmeal Stout, Lightning, Mighty Oak Firkin Gorgeous, Blackwater Blonde, Coach House Honey Pot, Outlaw Wild Mule, these in addition to those on pump in the bar, namely Woodforde Wherry, Maldon Gold, Pride. We were invited to taste those in the self-service marquee, but dont take the proverbial, then took our beers inside to pay. What a very friendly welcome and the guv took some time to talk to us, helped me find my pint mysteriously placed under our table, and one of his guys helped out after it slipped through my fingers and shattered, hmmm can you see a pattern here? You really are in the country here, among thatched buildings and fields, although the pub itself feels relatively new. Outstanding quality and service, tho, means well be back on another 3rd Saturday, and Ill take me velcro gloves!

A real corker of a pub selling a range (including a mild on my visit) of well-kept ales.

No TV's or fruit machines, just beer!

Was lucky enough to drop in on the 3rd weekend of the month and sample the beer lovers festie in a nice beer garden with marquee. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of this is that the Landlord (who is a thoroughly good egg and has a passion for beer) uses an honesty box for the guest beers and allows you to pour them out yourself!

One of the best pubs I've been to. Excellent all-round, I shall return!

Excellent service; good bar food; large garden and also marquee for dodgy weather. Local beers as well as national, all lovingly well served; still cider and perry, again knowledgeably served.

I live in Yorkshire but when I travel south to see friends this is my pub of choice. They keep things simple, good beer, friendly staff, trouble free environment. Plus Richard who works there is a really nice guy.

Fantastic pub made better if your visit coincides with the Beer Lovers Weekend (3rd w/end of the month). Fortunately ours did and what a pleasant afternoon was had by all. RACS Real Ale Club of Sawbridgeworth were holding a BBQ in the lovely garden, guvnor is friendly, down to earth bloke who loves his ales.

Cannot recommend too highly. Oh and they sell a mild as well!

This is a proper pub for the real beer fan. The Landlord has a real passion for all ales and is always willing to have new ones available for the customers to try. The beers are expertly kept, as real beer fans will prove by the fact they keep coming back for more. This is the type of place to visit if food is not your reason for going out, (even though they have perfectly acceptable bar food), It is purely for the High Quality Ales that are there!

This pub closed in 1994, and stood unloved for seven years, while there was a local debate over the owners application for planning permission to convert it into a private house. A couple of local villagers set up a company to buy half the original pub, allowing the other half of the pub to be converted into a house. The result is a rather small pub, which after four years of trading is more than making it's name for beer. Normally one Mild, Stout or porter on sale, two other beers, two ciders and one Perry. Look at the blackboard for daily beer list, as many beers are not on hand pump but served direct from the cellar. Third weekend of each month is the beer lovers club, where there is over eleven beers on sale. Beer festivals held in the large garden Whitson and August bank holidays. Be warned though - not open Monday & Tuesday lunchtimes.

Excellent pub, good range of real ales. Very popular with walkers and cyclists during the summer. Regular beer festivals and BBQs in the large garden during the summer. I have to admit I've only ever walked to this pub from Bishop's Stortford so I've no idea what it's like during the winter.

Very friendly independent village pub, saved from closure a couple of years ago by two local businessmen. Local Branch CAMRA pub of the year in 2004. Offers very well kept real ales: London Pride and a Mighty Oak (sorry, can't recall which one) always on tap, 2-4 others regularly changed. Several ciders and perries also stocked. Periodic beer festivals are held ie Easter and August bank holidays
