not very busy visted after the half moon vist which had been busy.got served straight away.an ok pub
|
Best feature is that it is often empty when the pubs around it are packed! OK range of beers and has been refurbished so looks much nicer inside. Still not as good as it neighbours, but fine if a group of you want a seat on a Friday night.
|
OK - cheap but the beer was nothing special

This place really isn't a 7. Has a poor selection of cask ales usually Bombardier and Theakstons Old Peculiar that are at best averagely kept and on one occasion total vinegar. Needs a serious refurbishment. Not a patch on the Half Moon next door.

Behind the bar you'll find 3 different displays of 6 varieties of crisps, and 2 more varieties hung on the wall - those running the place spend more time and effort displaying 20 packets of crisps than they do on the beer, perhaps a reflection of the hungry student types typical of the place, that don't have a square meal from one day to the next.
Cold, almost freezing real ale attempts to mask the slightly 'off' beer some days past its sell by date (I hope for their sake the crisps aren't out of date, or their business really will be in trouble!).
Free-standing 'once you pop you can'y stop' crisps and peanut vending machines give the atmosphere of a student flat night-in, with cheap nibbles on the living room table.
Rough furniture and no carpets - a place to go at the end of a night to vomit up your kebab indoors without being noticed or ruining the hose-down decor.
Catering for people with the "munchies", not a thirst - tho' why would students get the munchies..?..
Who has given this 7 out of 10? it's a 2 at max. Avoid if old enough to drink without the need to take passport ID with you.

I quite like The City. One of the better bars in Durham. Always had a decent pint and staff have laways been canny.
|
The City had one of the first video jukeboxes when I first visited in 1995 with plush red seating and an understanding attitude to under aged drinkers. A year later, they abandoned tradition for the fake "fiddle dee dee" of Scruffy Murphy's, before the City returned to 2005. Very friendly staff, well kept Bombardier and Old Peculier, but lacking in atmosphere somewhat.
|
A pleasant, near city centre pub, that is quite welcoming most of the time. Pleasant beers and staff, make this a good place to visit despite archetypal "irish pub" surroundings.

good pub very friendly staff, very nice place to have a pint and a game of pool

It's alright, but the choice of beers isn't great, and being right next to the superior Half Moon, it doesn't get my custom that often really.
|
Much improved since it stopped being scruffy murphys and returned to being The City nee Hotel. However I am always a bit wasted by the time I get here and therefore cannot tell you how good the beer is because i am onto shorts by then. Friendly service though

Really nice, friendly pub, offering excellent value for money on both food and drink. Pool table, all sports shown and very good range of foreign bers. Well worth a visit
