This has always been a Hydes pub from what i know so the person who had Holt's must of gone to a different pub. If you thought The Jolly Angler was stuck in a timewarp check this place out! Its got 1970s written all over the place and some of the dust must still be from there aswell. As far as i know there are 3 pubs in this area The Derby brewery arms which is very close to the Joseph Holts Brewery, The Berwick which doesn't sell real ale and The Dutton so its worth taking a stroll up there as there is an all you can eat Indian on the main road. The beer was kept pretty well although for our lager drinkers the Harp wasn't on so carling was the second choice. Has two anvils in the window which i bet are worth a bit. Give this pub a try if you like weird and strange pubs.

Having recently ticked off every pub (not bar) in the city centre and surrounding area with a pal of mine. I must recommend The Dutton for character, friendliness and not least a decent pint. Yes, there are better pubs in Manchester like the Marble and Thom's but the Dutton as crept on to our 'best of' list by the characters in the place and the welcome we get from them every time we go back. It's also within running distance for the last train from Victoria. A classic local boozer in the city centre and there aren't many of them! Give it a try before it's too late.

We made a special effort to find the Dutton Hotel, partly due to several revues suggesting it was some kind of classic backstreet boozer.
Located behind the MEN/Victoria station area, just near the bottom of the Cheetham Hill Road, the approach via Park Street was carpeted with broken car window glass and dumped rubbish. At the far end of Park Street, its on the corner with Dutton Street, just before the drug rehab centre to the right. If that doesnt raise your expectations, then you wont be too surprised by the insides. Smelling like the smoking ban may not always apply in this area, it was very quiet, the few locals not really acknowledging our presence. The floor & seating were pretty damn filthy. In one room at the far end of the pub, there seemed to be some kind of sports screen set up. The smaller central bar area was decorated with a huge collection of old-style brass blowlamps. Unusual, but not unattractive.
The only real ale is a Holts Bitter, which we have to say was in excellent condition. And 2.20 a pint will definitely please some. But that aside, it felt like a very run down pub in rough area. We cant see any reason to return.

Very quiet at lunch time to put it mildly. In fact a good chance of having the place to yourself. Beer OK though - Hydes Bitter.
|
nice enough pub, only had one ale on we were there, but was perfectly good pint, not bad for a quick one.
|
Good Hyde's pub - basic and worth escaping the back way from Victoria for.

Triangular shaped corner pub, which as a previous reviewer noted, is a lot bigger than it first appears. The main bar wedge shaped, with two rooms behind, one with a serving hatch to the bar. Oak beams and white painted walls. Two hand pumps serving Hyde's Original and Sacre Bleu. I opted for the Sacre Bleu and the landlord was most apologetic when it was found to be off. The Original was okay. A nice pub, spoiled slightly by the (I assume) local man who couldn't utter a sentence without using the F word at least once.

Very welcoming backstreet boozer only a stones throw from the MEN. Always has a standard Hydes Original on pump which is kept in an impeccable condition which can be also said of the guest beer which is usually on (usually a Hydes Festival Beer).
As for the previous post I have not made the acquaintance of the former 'Ulsterman' landlord but the current landlord is Manchester born and bred and is very friendly and has an expert knowledge on keeping beer (trust me it is that good). A must visit which should really advertise itself more!

Great pub. Beer always on top form. Is the landlord still the same rampant racist Ulsterman? It's a few years since I've been there but he was quite friendly to me and my mate due to us not being black.

Drinkers pub in a very quiet backstreet area near Victoria Station and the Arena. Decent pint.

Can't help but agree with the sentiments expressed here. A classic boosers boozer - plenty of character and a very good pint of Hydes. Very unusual shape. Unmissable.

Back street corner locals Hydes pub just north of the City Centre, close to where the old Boddingtons Brewery used to be.
Its bigger inside than it looks from the outside, being wedged at a narrow angled road junction.
Inside, note in particular, the trademark Hydes Anvil on display and a collection of blowtorches.
The blackened oak beams give the pub a bit of a country pub feel, but, in most other respects, this is a typical back street Mancs boozer ( well so my northern friends say ).
Had a good pint of Hydes Original - 2.20p - a rather clean tasting beer.
Probably worthy of the short walk from Manchester Victoria B R, but I prefer both the Hare and Hounds in Shudehill and the Marble Arch on Rochdale Road in this area of Manchester.

Fairport79, it's a Hydes pub! I'm gonna tell Gordon on you. ;P
|
Proper rough-edged old-fashioned pub, in an area that still looks and feels like the true 'Manchester'. Probably not the best place to take your girlfriend but an interesting interior and talkative regulars make it worth a trip for the lover of the classic boozer.

Traditional Holt's pub behind the former Boddington's Brewery. Don't know much longer it will survive with the relentless march of development going on, but it is well supported by North Manchester CAMRA, and I hope the pub continues to operate.

Unmissable on a Manchester crawl, more so for the almost unique atmosphere than the Hydes (OK). Like a set from "Life on Mars" - a compliment I think.
