user reviews of the Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Immaculate back street (where the houses are no doubt in the millions!) pub.

Saturday afternoon and I was the only punter. Number of humans doubled by the silent barstaff, obviously wondering how she was going to get through the day.

Its a shame, as the decor and beer (shepherds neame) were both first class. You could even save the price of the Times, read theirs and help contribute to the local economy.

My visit blogged at http://bit.ly/2nw0e2o

Went in after work. As previous reviews not many people were in.However great bar staff very friendly people at the bar, decent beers, soon felt at ease . Working in the area for the foreseeable future . This could become my favourite pub in Greenwich. Definitely worth a visit. I will be back!

Reasonable locals' pub, Shepherd Neame which is unusual around here, too far out of the centre of Greenwich and away from the park to be much other than a backstreet local I think but does all right at that.
rainlight - 3 May 2016 09:19
went in on june 22 the 7 of us doubled the customers .very quiet for a sat night .good beer though, and had a good chat to the landlord about the closeing down of some of the pubs in the area ie the royal george, said it was lack of custom ,when we left there were only 6/7 people in the place now thats a lack of custom on a sat night which is a shame because this is a smashing little pub and is well worth popping in to .PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL IN GREENWICH

Friendly pub, with decent food and beer. Away from the town centre, but still has a steady stream of customers, especially on quiz night. Definitely a locals pub, but worth a journey if you're looking for pretty corner of Greenwich for a pint.
fluffy_mike - 19 Apr 2013 11:21
Like this place. Friendly locals offering their papers to read.
Out of the way a bit but close to the main station if you know where you are going. They had a cat, he looked a cool dude..
bigaerials - 24 Feb 2013 18:18
The ales were in good shape when I was there taking part on the quiz night. Seems a great place.
Trinker - 6 Jul 2011 22:56
Average SN pub with the usual ales on show, one of the better pubs in the area along a quite residential street not much else really going for it tho.

This pub has been my local for the last 4 years. At first it can seem either very quiet or somewhat overrun by locals depending on what time you go, but persevere and there is a real gem here. The landlord and staff are friendly, and the regulars are too if you give them time, the food can be amazing, and the real ale is brilliant. For those who state this place is unwelcoming, I must disagree... all are welcome in this pub, even those much maligned pub minorities: children and dogs! Compared to the other scruffy local pubs, and tourist bars, this place has a real charm to it.

Summer evenings in the garden out back, and winter nights on comfy sofas by the fire. What more could you ask for?

Excellent and well kept Shepherd Neame beer, decent wine list, friendly staff who make everyone feel welcome, and good food (try the Sri Lankan Black Chicken curry) ! The front terrace and garden are ideal if the weather is nice.
The exact opposite of all of the Greenwich pubs run (or should that be ruined) by Greenwich Inc.

Spitfire, Masterbrew, Kents Best, Whitstable Bay, all in pretty good shape, the latter very good indeed, as one would hope for 3.20. The pub is fairly characterless with insipid modernity but I hadnt previously realised it has a nice part-tented beer garden to the rear, in addition to the outside seating at the front.
trainman - 28 Jun 2009 11:19
Visited here early Saturday evening, fairly quiet and relaxed. Decor is very spic and span and clean. Top notch Masterbrew and Whitstable Bay. Did not try the food but it looked very nice. The pub seems to make an effort to be family friendly but there are a couple of very strange locals...

Been here a couple of times. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, well kept beer and tucked away in a very quiet (and posh) street. Had a very good Shepherds Neame stout as guest beer. Recomended.
Green_0nions - 22 Mar 2009 15:42
group of us turned up around 1145 in the morning to find a kids' birthday party going on! Despite this somewhat surreal start to the day a very pleasant pint of Master Brew and comfortable sofas by the fire....am sure this would be worth visiting again!
jeremyb - 13 Dec 2008 08:06
Have been here several times this year and have to say, staff always friendly, great relaxed atmosphere and really enjoy going. I cannot comment on the food or beer, as I only drink wine, but bloke seems to approve of the beer and the food that others were eating last night looked good.
alimarcam - 15 Aug 2008 09:02
Not a huge fan of Shepherd Neame beers but, that said, on my first visit found this to be a quiet (Sunday afternoon) pub, with friendly locals. Very nice.
JonW999 - 7 Apr 2008 20:03
keeps the beer well but other pubs in Greenwich manage this. Landlord was bad and the service terrible if you are a stranger to them. do not go on Tuesday as the place turns into some sort of Music Quiz hell.

Bottom line is there are much better pubs in the area.
pub_fox - 2 Apr 2008 13:14
This pub is pretty close to perfection, I cant comment about the food, because as yet I haven't eaten there. The service is fantastic, the beer is well kept, its relaxing, comfortable, great ambience, they have a garden front and rear for the summer, I would recommend it to anyone.
trickydisco - 17 Mar 2008 11:30
Went there on Friday with my 7 yr old daughter. Beer was superb, and service good. Children very welcome. The pizza's were maybe not pizzeria std, but my American Hot was actually that, a pleasent change for most pub pizzas. Lovely local
Barneylad - 17 Mar 2008 11:13
Always make a point of visiting this pub when visiting the area (by far the best real ale pub that we have found here over a considerable number of years). Serves easily the best pint of Master Brew that I have recently experienced -taste-wise the most reminiscent of the magnificent old heavily dry-hopped ale of many decades ago (why can't other Shepherd Neame pubs get the Master Brew tasting this good despite the brewery for some years now having changed to only lightly dry-hopping the brew?). Superb landlord recommended us to a very good establishment in the area (The Hill) for an excellent Sunday dinner (missed the good value Sunday lunch here) - many thanks - see you again soon.

Need a compass to find this one. Old style backstreet boozer, serves good Sheps beer. Friendly atmosphere but can get busy after work
mrse1 - 22 Feb 2008 13:25
Visited during a mid-week afternoon and it was off the bottom of the quietness scale. But the beer was very good and the large painted map of the area is a real feature. This is the sort of back-street pub of which far too many have disappeared over the last few years. I hope it's a lot better frequented at more popular times.
Dave_the_Bee - 7 Feb 2008 21:00
Visited mid afternoon today and no complaints, Shepherd Neame beers on had the Autumn Late Red which was in top condition. Hard to comment on atmosphere as my visit was late afternoon, but I found it not unfriendly for a back street local. Unusual painted map on the wall of the bar near the toilets of the Greenwich bend in the river. Odd "french" style interior partition between ladies and gents toilets.
Maldenman - 24 Oct 2007 22:15
Pleasant enough pub, tucked away half way up a residental street. Decent Shepherds Neame beer, decor more that of wine bar than a pub but comfortable. Only downside was the choice of CD-some sort of 80's compilation(Spandau Ballet, Gold drove me to the patio out front!)
BlindTiger - 16 Aug 2006 18:23
A good pub that grows on you. I have it on good authority the food is all done in house, not from some frozen time capsule production line. It certainly tastes like the real deal. Good mix of customers from toffs to your average punter. Well worth a visit.
jackthelad - 9 Feb 2006 23:29
I finally found the Ashburnham Arms after a number of misses, and expected your basic "back street boozer". It ain't. The bar area is light & airy, the Shepherd Neame ales were in good shape, and the food was good and reasonably priced. I appreciated the stack of newspapers & magazines for when you want to kick back & read. I'm certain this place gets packed with yuppies, but I doubt the regular crowd are high street types: you have to really want to find this place, and if you want good ale and good food, it's not a bad choice.
martineaux - 7 Nov 2005 17:24
Great beer (well kept Shepherd Neame), friendly landlord but a great shame about the regulars who think they own the place and whose attitude makes the occasional customer feel unwelcome- and consequently most sensible people who live round here drink elsewhere. Try the The Richard the 1st instead !
anonymous - 17 Oct 2005 22:28
I used to frequent this place some time ago. Is it still run by John and Betty.
bertramr - 12 Apr 2005 12:27
A great pub, tucked on a back street in Greenwich, Bar Billards still intact at the pub. Great food menu, Pasta, Pizza and steak and a roast on a sunday. The tuesdayquiz night is good fun, with Chardonnay moments from the quiz master!!! The beer is great here, keep up the good work

DJRLON - 9 Aug 2004 22:11
I haven't been in this pub for 10 years before today, and while it's fine - excellent beer, nice chairs and tables out the front -it's definitely lost its soul. No bar billiards any more (takes up profitable table space); a menu that used to be (just) surprising and good-value pasta has gone all New-Labour poncy; a pointless wine-bary extension.... weep for another genuine quirky local that sold out to gastro-pub pretensions. But still better than most. 6 points with a heavy heart; the pub of 10 years ago would have got 8.
anonymous - 23 May 2004 21:39
Yay for back-street Greenwich pubs. Nice beer and a nice vide but the decor is a *little* bit B&B-ish
MrScott - 14 May 2004 11:10
Over the last year the inside of this pub has been transformed, not through anything structural, but by way of the decor. As a result it feels a bit warmer and consequently seems more busy. Beer still excellent. A real gem of a pub.
Andrew - 15 Feb 2004 10:04
We love this pub - not least because it has bar billiards which takes us back to the Oxfordshire pub crawls of our teenage years. Really nice atmosphere and lovely beer.
Sarah M - 20 Aug 2003 15:21
Don't go near the pub quiz on Tuesdays, it's terrible. Spitfire's great, but even if you've had nine, don't eat the fake coal in the gas fire, it'll make you feel awful.
asbestoseater - 8 Aug 2003 16:10
Unbelievable prices dearer than the west end - nearly 3 a pint in a dingey backstreet boozer!
Charles Atlas - 26 Jul 2003 09:40
A great pub with a friendly atmosphere, the beers are excellent and there's always some characters in there including 'The Face of Greenwich' highly recommended.
Ivan - 8 Jul 2003 13:46
A great pub. A genuine back street local away from the hustle and bustle of central Greenwich.
It's under new ownership and the new guvnor has introduced a much expanded food menu. I had the roast lunch there yesterday and it was excellent. It was 6.95.
Chris - 28 Apr 2003 08:57
I last visited this pub in the autumn of 2002. The Shepherd Neame Masterbrew and Spitfire beers were in excellent condition. Regarding the comments of the last contributor, the pub does "calm down" quite quickly in the evening and becomes somewhat "gentrified", creating a very pleasant atmosphere in which to sup a pint of Masterbrew. The food is excellent (or certainly was when I visited) mainly in the form of pasta and pizza, and the pub is only 15 mins (if that) walk from the Docklands light railway station. In giving the pub a rating of eight, I submit this is one of Greenwich's best pubs - long may it continue.
lad_newton - 14 Apr 2003 18:00
Local pub in quiet residiential street away from the tourist hordes. Good beer from Shepherd Neame. Beer garden at rear and seats our front. Before 8pm in the summer it is a bit like a creche in the back garden.
