A pint of Shropshire Gold went down a treat after a long drive from Oxford en route to Bangor and a lentil and chorizo stew accompanied by succulent duck breast slices also hit the spot. My travelling companion also enjoyed his chicken in a basket with chips although the basket was a plastic one. A great option not too far off a key driving route to North Wales from the South and Midlands.

Oh dear. The night we went specials on the board were not available but they hadn't bothered removing them, other customers got meals not containing the ingredients advertised, service was slow and confused, the electrics flickered alarmingly, helpings were small but pretentious, beer unremarkable and the whole thing severely overpriced. They are trying to be what they clearly aren't.

One word. Fantastic. Food, ales, other drink and service were all superb. Although had difficulty getting a booking in the restaurant due to popular demand and not being able to find the correct phone number! Had to call in and ask the chap at the bar for a card. For anyone else's reference it is 01939262882! Highly recommend a visit!

This country pub has been closed for over 18 months. We were really pleased when we heard it was reopening. After our meal on opening night last Wednesday night we were not disapointed. The interior is stylish yet cosy and the food was excellent. It is definately worth a visit and we wil definately be going back for what was a brilliant night.

Pub closed May2009. Another victim of indifferent proprietor and locals who dont value village amenities. Empty most nights of the week, no food served, availability of real ale a hit or miss affair. Very sad.

Right - ok, I've been back and it was much MUCH better than last time, I stand by those comments as that was the experience I had, I'll put it down to an off night. The Cartwrights weren't exactly the last word as hosts I know (John the barman could be very rude) so maybe i shouldn't have made them out to sound like saints.
Anyway, this time, the food was nice and the beer excellent and a nice atmosphere about the place, it was busy

Having read Harry's comments, I wonder if he has a white stick and a guide dog! I have seen the amazing improvements that have been made at this pub since the new owners came in, the re-decoration is much better, and the new menu is well appreciated as the previous owners didn't even offer a full food menu. The now extra cold lager is much better than the warm wee the old owners used to sell, and the real ale is hard to beat. Personally, if I had to choose a pub to drink at in Ruyton, it would be this one.

I disagree greatly with the other comment on this public house, Before the new owners took over the place was not up to standard. The beer was undrinkable and the place had no atmostphere. As a citizen of the village i have seen the hard work been put into the refurb to this place by not only the landlord but his staff. The drink selection is superb, the dining room is absolutly incrediable and they have even given the louge its own personal little area. I could not complain about the food/beer/atmostphere or management. Congratulations to them for bringing a sinking pub back to our village that we onced liked but now love.

Used to do great food and have great beer and have a lovely atmosphere. New people came in, took it downmarket and now is full of slack jawed cletus types and other assorted riff raff. A crime as it was a lovely pub, ruined by an idle landlord who couldn't care less
