Very nice corner pub away from the main tourist area of Ely. Good range of Adnams' ales. Check on opening times before making a special trip.

Had a pint of Milton Sparta here- it was okay.

Unpromising from the outside - looks like a private, rather than a public house - but things improve when you get inside. The bar is long and wooden-floored and has an eccentric collection of furniture including what looks like a dentist's chair. Had a couple of pints of Pegasus and one of Broadside - all perfectly poured by the two young barmaids who dealt brilliantly with a very busy bar.

Unchanged in the 5 years since my last visit (out of the Beer Guide before then). The Broadside was excellent, the pub civilized and relaxing, but the lack of food, restricted opening and relatively plain beer range are reasons I don't visit as often as the beer quality warrant. Worth a trip.

Four ales to choose from including Woodfords Wherry. I had a pint of Shepherd Neame's Spitfire which was fine. A pleasant pub.
|
I like my beer cooler than most but the ale was VERY cold. Didn't open til 5pm which made it a quick visit before catching the train home. Tried were Wherry and Adnams Old and there were two others. Apart from the temperature they were fine.

Went in during a weekend stay in Ely, and found it the best pub in the town and the most welcoming and convivial. Yes I would agree with other posters that it is a bit of a private members club, but a polite one with a good atmosphere, good Shepherd Neame and polite service.

Last time I went in the land lord was rude and there were children running about all over the place - not condusive to a "wind down" pint after work on a Friday.

Not been in for a while, but my recollection is that it is friendly back street local, with a good standard of Sheps beers.

Can't complain about the beer and it's a well disciplined pub with decent clientele. Have to say the comments about closing early is one of the most grevious things a pub can do in my humble opinion. People are entilted to drink and be served until the time stated or the time that the pub usually closes. We're not talking legal stuff here, I know the pub can close anytime they decide. I mean the moral and ehtical issue of taking peoples money then closing befroe you expect them to, we not talking about late drinks or lock ins, just the normal time that they close, or should close each night.

Great pub, great beers.

Amen to Spetswalshe's and Tierney's comments. I would add that the Fountain can often have the air of a private member's club rather than a pub, and that the landlord's photographs of the first Gulf War might not be to everyone's taste, even if the beer is.

agree, great log fire in the winter and a nice pub if you don't mind the hunting trophies on the walls. bar staff are usually relatively friendly, however management are not; comments about calling time early and shutting on a whim are both true, and it's one of the most expensive pubs for lager in ely. don't expect cider on tap, either, but a decent selection of ales if that's how you get down.

I should add to yesterday's comment that 'shutting' time early involves calling time early (with no warning) and closing on the dot at 11.00 - and in pratice turfing people out earlier. No respect shown to the customer, or the late visitor, at all. It's a shame in a pub that won a Camra award a few years ago.

Stocks a reasonable selection of draught real ale and beer. This is sometimes excellent, but has also been of rather lower quality. The management will also shut up on a whim if they don't have enough people in, and (!) are prepared to tell the customer that their custom isn't worth keeping it open. Make of that what you will.

Fantastic beer and a great log fire.

A one-off - no food for the tourist, but immaculate beer and general presntation - perhaps a bit clinical for some !
