Spent another pleasant afternoon in the Red House. 4 ales available, tried 3 and all were excellent. Noticed they are having an ale festival on the 31st May. Will be visiting.

Not bad but not exceptional. Old red house by the former main road with a big car park. The stress here is on food, and opinions there seem to vary with who you consult. The beer quality is good, usually 2-3(-4) ales often with something out-of-the-ordinary. The drinking area feels more like a lounge, and can have diners taking up the space - a bit twee but is still welcoming, and the lower level back part of the bar is a good place for a quiet chat.

A quiet pub on a main road, all the better for a bank holiday beer festival they were holding. Cottage Hot Dog & Wheel Tapper's Ale, St Austell Tinners, Oakham Inferno & JHB, Adnams Bitter, Jennings Cragrat & Cumberland Ale, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, Woodfordes Wherry and Black Sheep Bitter were the festival beers. Thatchers Heritage cider was also available. The interior was very comfortable and we had a very friendly welcome.

After the last visit which was very enjoyable I have to post another after what was to me an expensive meal that was not upto the standard this pub used to have. Dirty glasses and cutlery and sticky floors are not my idea of a nice evening out. The service was friendly and the food arrived fairly quickly but my main course was poor to the point I felt ill after we left. Also looking back at the bill we appeared to haver been overcharged. Also a note the sign outside says 4 real ales, I counted only 2 and a cider. Shame to see a good pub go downhill and suffice to say we probably wont visit again.

A saturday early evening visit for a meal and a few beers. A strange little pub but a very welcoming atmosphere, Friendly staff, Good food and ales. On tap at the time were Church end brewery Grave digger, Cottage brewery bitter and Green King IPA. I tried both the Church and and the Cottage ales and found them both to be excellent. On to the food, My choice was the good old liver and bacon which was really good, My partner chose the suffed mushrooms which also looked good. although it took ages for the food to arrive even though it was early and not that busy the wait was worth it. Will be visiting again.

Have been to this lovely pub a few times and have always enjoyed my visit. Went there today. 3 real ales were available today and all kept and served well. Nice atmosphere with classic music playing in the background. Bar staff seemed pleasant. Didn't eat there, but the Sunday lunches being served looked very good. Will go back again.

Well I didn't have the faggots in the end but the pie was certainly very game. That large pianist was in there again, tinkling away. I can certainly recommend the Cottage they had on tap, it slipped down a treat.

I have been to this pub many times when camping around the local area. The cheeseburgers are legendary (proper home made burgers), the door step sandwiches are excellent, portions are large and the selection of real ales is great too - highly recommended. As an added plus, it is the lawnmower racing capital of East Anglia. Regarding the music - I love being entertained by a skilled pianist. What spoils it for me is the number of nerds that seem to frequent the place who seem to spend all their time ranting on about something called "MKS", whatever that is.

Don't go there on Friday lunchtimes. There is often a ham-fisted buffoon bashing out cheesy tunes on the piano. Apparently, he does requests but when I once told him I'd like to hear the sound of silence, he didn't seem to get it.

I have been here many times and must say that the food is very good, especially the greek salad. I'm looking forward to the faggots on my next visit. The barman does have an awkward gait but I think that's down to the lawnmower he races.

We're staying in the area for a few days and this pub was recommended - particularly for it's 'great steaks'. Thought I'd check out the reviews. As the comments were a bit dated, we decided to give it a go anyway. The remarks such as dour, uncommunicative, unpleasant attitude, drunken barman etc should have rung some alarm bells! On arrival the place looks shabby, only a couple of cars in the nearby lane. Yes there was a barman/waiter apparently the worse for wear, but to be generous he may be suffering from some illness that affects his speech and balance! The fish was almost cremated, the chips appeared suspiciously re-heated and the salad looked like something that had been hiding in a plastic bag in the bilges of the fridge. My chicken pie was very tasty with lots of meat in a lovely sauce, pastry was different. The veg, like the salad, had definitely seen better days. We both felt that the staff of 3 were almost waiting for us to complain. Such a shame, the pub certainly had character and characters. We will not be going back again.

To be honest this is a nice pub for 1 or 2 beers, beyond that it is really not worth the visit. The service is dreadful, beyond the the natural adversion to the hairdresser type whine about thier problems being the customers' problems and the over priced and poor food. On a good day however, this can be a pleasant experience for a beer in your own company.

Lovely old coaching inn with welcoming log fire, friendly barman and good choice of ales - Woodfordes Tinsel Toes, Wherry & Sundew, and Atlantic when we visited today. Good bowl of chips too!

Called in on a long trip to southend - very friendly staff and excellent food at favouable prices for quantity supplied. Nice log fire and good seating area. Barman was from my home town in hull so conversation flowed. recommend visit any time.

A pub with great ambience and excellent beer, let down by the unpleasant attitude of the staff and the mediocre food. The landlord is dour and uncommunicative, the main barman appears slightly drunk on most visits and overcharging queries met with hostility (even though they overcharged us 12 in one instance). Won't be going back.
