We're staying in the area for a few days and this pub was recommended - particularly for it's 'great steaks'. Thought I'd check out the reviews. As the comments were a bit dated, we decided to give it a go anyway. The remarks such as dour, uncommunicative, unpleasant attitude, drunken barman etc should have rung some alarm bells! On arrival the place looks shabby, only a couple of cars in the nearby lane. Yes there was a barman/waiter apparently the worse for wear, but to be generous he may be suffering from some illness that affects his speech and balance! The fish was almost cremated, the chips appeared suspiciously re-heated and the salad looked like something that had been hiding in a plastic bag in the bilges of the fridge. My chicken pie was very tasty with lots of meat in a lovely sauce, pastry was different. The veg, like the salad, had definitely seen better days. We both felt that the staff of 3 were almost waiting for us to complain. Such a shame, the pub certainly had character and characters. We will not be going back again.

The Golden Ball, Boxworth
Visiting the area with friends for a few days, the Golden Ball was recommended for last Sundays lunch. Excellent recommendation, efficient, friendly and attentive service. Will definitely return.
