please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not a huge range of beers but very good in all other respects - the ales were well kept while a beautiful black Labrador came and snuggled up to us of a Monday afternoon in winter and the barman chose the greatest hits of The Cure to serenade us, getting a good thumbs up from us. He and his mate were, weirdly, scouring the internet for skiing holidays while on asking his pal if he could cover his shift for a couple of weeks, the response as an immediate, 'yeah - ok then'

Small back street pub had 3 ales on

Impressive boozer, pretty much packed to the rafters every time I'm in there, and always a great buzz to the place. Beer is always beautifully kept and the food is brilliant, well worth a visit.

It's a bit small - like being in a small boat. Although there's nothing wrong with the pub - the much talked-about food is OK - it does seem to be missing some vital ingredient... atmosphere?

Great little pub, just tucked away off the western road. Warm and friendly, chatty bar staff and fantastic tunes! Ate the must amazing lamb shank. Highly recommended.

Excellent little boozer, just had a bit of a makeover, very nice it is too! Also serves best pint of Guiness in town. Even better than the Fiddler's Elbow, which is saying something. Highly recommended!

Excellent local tucked away in a Hove back street.

Always a superb pint of Harvey's plus a guest ale. Really friendy and efficient bar staff, and huuuge Sunday roasts (inc vegan nut roast) though I was disappointed to see it's recently gone up to nearly a tenner, which is pushing it a bit.

My only reservation is the bar blokey always plays his music far too loud, which results in everyone having to shout to be heard. I go to a club or a gig for loud music, and to a pub for a pint and a civilised chat, no matter how excellent his choice of tunes may be.

Splendid little boozer: Simon is the perfect host for an afternoon session, watching the world go by with a few beers and classic tunes from his i-pod!!

This remains a super little boozer.
I used to work nearby and this was my annex.
Wonderful Harveys in an intimate environment.

Excellent Sunday roasts with veggie options. Good choice of beer. Good pint of Harveys. Great atmosphere.

Odd little place. Only Harvey's on when I visited but I believe they usually do a few others. Due to its size, only needs a few people in to feel lively. Smokers are limited to a few tables out the front on the pavement.

By far hands down, the best 'Sunday Roast' in Brighton.
I wish I lived closer, as I'd go there more often...
The only downside is that it's small and compact, so get there early.

Best Harveys in this part of Brighton! Took me a while to discover it even though I live nearby, highly recommended!

What a great pub! Great atmosphere, amazing food, and a fantastic dj the night we were there, highly recommended for a great night out!

I would suggest Mark.Ed give Coopers another go, if my bitter was off (i'm assuming it was bitter, you don't really here of anything else going off), I'd take it back, probably the end of the barrel, and get another. Great pub, selling the best Harveys in Brighton & Hove.

hmmm Is it me or does that review from ilovehove sound like a press release from the people that manage the Coopers Cask? All I know is my beer was off and I was too depressed to take it back...

Can't lavish enough praise on this pub. By far my favourite place to drink in Brighton & Hove. They have the best selection of beers and now have a weekly geust ale from local microbreweries. Also they've just changed their head chef and the food quality has gone up ten fold. Some of you mayknow of her, her name is Sandra, and she was the head chef at the Eclipse and the Hop Poles before that, her food is simply just amazing. Also they've just started putting DJ's on at the weekends again, and now have free wi-fi and Illy Coffee (my favourite coffee). All in all, a fantastic cosy boozer, always packed with a great atmosphere. Highly recommended!

This really did used to serve the best food in Brighton..sadly no more. The picture doesn't do it justice; the window boxes and hanging baskets are superb. Still a nice pub but I no longer eat there 5 times a week as I used to!

Hmmm. This has the potential to be a choice little boozer but sadly it lacks atmosphere and warmth. Although teh staff are accomodating after having been here quite a few time and seen the same bar staff I was saddened that I was greated with just a smile of acknowledgement. I not asking for friendship but a few words don't hurt.
As for food, very tasty and probably one of the best pub grub you are going to get athough the pub up the Road neats them hands down.
Overall a bit to Guardianesque for my liking.

Having been dissappointed last year when the food went seriously downhill (but from a very high hill) the Cooper's has started to show a little of its old magic. Worth a revisit.

I would recommend that LittleMissTidy give this place another go. I have recently started attending (and winning!) the Tuesday night quiz and, last night, managed to get there early enough to have a bite to eat before proceedings commenced. The home-made fishcakes were some of the best I've ever eaten. The menu is quite diverse and I just know that I'm going to sample some of its other goodies in the future. A pretty large Specials list is available, also. Admittedly, the pub can get a bit cramped at times but I always find it very friendly to boot. Big thumbs up

This pub used to be one of the best pubs in Brighton to go to for food (along the lines of Hop Poles in Middle St). The only downfall then was the lack of space to sit for food due to the popularity of it.

Unfortunately, it has gone downhill this year. I don't know if the management or chef left, but now their menu is boring and stale. Worth popping in for a quick pint if you're nearby but then so are most of the pubs in the area.

Too close to the Farm and very clicky and up their own arse and don't squeeze lime well enough!!!!!!

What a small pub in an area full of young people should be. Good drinks, music, staff, original food menu and stylish, but most importantly STILL A PROPER PUB!
reynedd - 1 Aug 2005 11:31
A small but really nice pub. An excellent range of beer, and the table service was an unexpected bonus. Didn't check out the food, but other customers seemed to enjoy it and it looked good too. Everyone is so friendly it makes it a really nice place to hang out if you're new to the area. A quality gaff!
gravedigga - 11 May 2005 20:39
Once a pub so good that I preferred not to recommend it (for fear of making it even busier), the Coopers has lost a little of its magic recently. Food is still excellent and generously portioned but the specials menu is less varied and enticing since chef Jonboy left. On the other hand, good pints of HSB and Harvey's Best to wash it down mean there are few finer places in Hove for a lazy lunch. No longer god-like in its greatness, perhaps, but still great.

As well as the friendly atmosphere, it is worth mentioning this pub's imaginative food menu and very good selection of drinks. In a way it's a shame the place is so small, but it's well worth a visit.

The Coopers was my favourite haunt throughout my years in Brighton. It guaranteed excellent food at a good price, and extremely friendly staff (and they do table service...bonus!). Having revisited it recently, I can vouch that not much has changed, apart from maybe a few pink decorations marked by the new gay management, and an increasing number of monkey toys! This pub is a little gem and i can quite safely say that i have not yet encountered one of the same quality in London! There are rumours that the new sister pub ,The London Unity, has taken off equally as well.

gets crowded but the best atmosphere of any pub i've ever been to (and i have been to rather a lot)
