please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sadly this used to be one of the best pubs in Brighton. Avoid now though. Pre-club crowd pub.

As mentioned previously, formally a Indie/Alternative decent hangout now sadly transformed into yet another souless pre-club,kiddies watering hole.

No punters over25,no beer,no hope.....pity!

The food is awful - everything microwaved and overcooked. It was virtually empty when I visited which is a shame because it could be a great place.

Once goof, now a dive.

This pub a couple of years ago was great always buzzing good friendly staff, whats changed??
Beersupper - 31 Dec 2008 16:52
Used to be a great place..... Now its just a soul-less drinking spot should you be thirsty whilst in the Lanes

Went into this pub a few times on weekends away in Brighton several years ago. Fantastic rock / indie venue with great live music performed on a stage that sat on top of the bar. Made a bee-line for it after moving down to Brighton 2 years ago and suffered the sinking feeling of seeing it transformed into a pre-club hang out for the West Street faithful. Absolute waste. The only thing in it's favour is that it's a great venue for watching sport.

Food is great here and the bar staff are fit also! Was in for a football game and a great atmospshere and the service was excellent.

I must be old too (also 24), this place has been destroyed.
notters - 31 Aug 2007 14:42
Has turned into a bit of a pre-club stop off for people that frequent West Street *shudder*. It did used to be a nice enough place, but in there attempt to move it up market, the clientelle have gone down market. When will people learn that coloured lights, sheets and jugs of cocktails dont nessaceraly make a pub better? Maybe i'm just getting old (24)

By the sound of previous posts, I missed this pubs hay-day...

I like the modern feel of a pub as well as the tradional style, but this place is a little sterile and not alot of good range of tap. Its huge and spacious and has tremendous potential.

the_original_rawnsleys - 17 Aug 2006 12:53
No proper beer on tap.

Fascinating building of course...
Had a bit of character a few years back which is an odd thing to say about a Firkin pub....

I think I preferred it when it was a church.

this pub changed drastically with the refurbishment. the scruffy student image has disappeared, which is a bit of a shame. good place if you're looking for bargain cocktails - 2 each on last count.

Jockstrap is spot on (don't say that very often). 'Discovered' this pub back in May 1995, not long after it opened, at the tender age of 18. Literally lived here for the next 4 or 5 years and then spent the next 5 years witnessing it's gradual demise. Everyting that was great about this pub is gone - The great Firkin ales (now no real ales at all), the barrel tables, the...oh I can't be bothered, I'M SO ANNOYED!!! Only good point, they've still got the big screen so might be in here in the summer singing 'WHO THE FIRKIN HELL ARE YOU???...'
giantelf - 20 Mar 2006 17:56
A sad parady to its former glory. 6-8 years ago this was a top pub serving the well known, and well drunk Dogbolter and other Firkin greats. Sadly now just full of not very nice people!

Used to have good live music on some nights - my mate actually got his wedding reception entertainment from a bloke he saw perform here. Otherwise not got a lot going for it now except that they try with the food. Staff generally polite and good and drinks ok. Bit of a pre-club place on Friday and Saturday nights though (not my cup-of-tea). One good thing now though, is that they no longer compete with the King and Queen as having the worst loos in Brighton.

Seems to have cornered the market in watching football in 'The Lanes' - other pubs pick up their overspill.

Popped back in here today (Thursday 26th, actually, but only just got round to posting). Nothing in particular marks it out, except for continuing deals on certain drinks. A stopping off point for me, no more than that.

Having said that, it must be doing something right.
toffee_exile - 27 May 2005 00:54
Not been the same since it had its "refurb", though worth checking out the lampshades on the bar - I've not seen anything like 'em since I used to sit in my granny's parlour as a nipper! What next, antimacassars on the couches? lol
toffee_exile - 9 Mar 2005 18:39
A perennially sad thing about coming to Brighton; one always ends up in the Font with vague recollections of when it (and Firkins in general) were good. Laterly just another loathsome chav hangout. The promise of live music is hardly uplifting either - on our last visit we had the one man rent-a-mod band exhorting audience bark-ticipation on the chorus of another turgid Oasis anthem... all of which highlights that British yoof culture has been crap for at least the last ten years.
tpk1 - 4 Mar 2005 12:48
If your idea of fun is to binge as much cheap, fizzy lager as you can while howling at a screen showing the football, you'd probably be right at home.

However this is not my bag at all. I think it's a loud, obnoxious bar with a horrendous atmosphere.

A pleasure to visit the font. Just something about the place which means you always want to come back again and again.

Only visited this place on a Saturday pre clubbing when it absolutely heaves. Good atmosphere and very unusual.

I can't agree more with anyone else who's commented. It's nice, but as usual on a Friday / Saturday night, it's rammed with baseball-cap wearing scllies and stag and hen parties. Sorry to sound so negative, but the weekdays are normally pretty good.
Nice big pub, original layout for being an ex-church and nice beers.
Jim - 2 Oct 2003 15:48
This place reminds you why Firkin pubs were good a long time ago. Great building, well-run, not bad beer. Nice place to watch the football too.
Darryl - 3 Aug 2003 11:40
Really nice pub. Always have great deals on certain drinks, and the jukebox is the dog's! The fact that it used to be a church makes something really special about the whole place.
Briony - 21 Jul 2003 15:45
I agree with zz here. The live musician from the alter is always a nice touch!
Matt Le Ross - 9 Jul 2003 11:56
for a Firkin, this place is really nice. the fact that it used to be a church definitely helps. massive, variable crowd, quite a lot of students, decent jukebox. good for watching football - upstairs has a viewing gallery which looks like pews from its former use.

Located down the Lanes area of Brighton this converted church is a place to worship booze. Live bands perfoem here most weekends, including The Grumbleweeds, Acker Bilk and Alan Temple. The FAF is currently looking for staff for an "immediate start" although be warned that bouncers do not conduct interviews. Recently installed is a new "johnometer" similar to the fabled clapometer from Going Live. You don't win anything for hitting the red bits but its a guaranteed way of annoying the staff. Local resident and gangsta rap artiste Eminem works at the local 8 til late as a security guard. ocal tramps all have the same sleeping bag and beggars enjoy conversing on the topic of chewing gum removal. PS Never drink a half full bottle of port with wet sides.
