please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Still the only place in Luton for decent ale. Still a proper pub only criticism is that it isn't the warmest of places when it's parky outside.
Snarling_Mallard - 2 Mar 2018 20:24
Uncompromisingly Victorian style pub decorated with barrels, leather-bound books, and old photos. The space is spread through several rooms. Can get a bit busy on match-days although I wouldn't let that put you off coming even then. A fine selection of well kept ales. The yard area is a bit bleak but all in all a top boozer and being close to the station there is really no excuse not to stop by.
Richard_ReadingFC - 9 Aug 2017 15:46
Traditional Victorian basic town pub close to Railway Station, several rooms sparsely furnished and with very old looking chairs / stools. Always at least four real ales on handpump and are all kept in superb condition. Very much a drinkers pub, I don't think food is served although nuts and crisps compliment the beer. Ideal to start a crawl as open all day, well recommended.
manx_888 - 16 Dec 2015 13:08
A really good, clean and well run pub with excellent beer and service.
zoomy - 4 Jan 2015 22:49
Great boozer, packed on football day's but get served quickly and politely. Oakham endless summer in top form.
Only pub I would use in Luton
pwilkins - 18 Aug 2014 09:40
Luton's finest pub, great selection of well-kept "session-strength" ales. Very friendly bar staff and locals too, ranging from poets and musicians to normal people. Plenty to look at on the walls if your mate's at the bar too.
Humber - 2 Feb 2014 13:07
A proper local's pub, but by and large the staff and locals are friendly. You will get decent beer here and it's close to the railway station in the area of Luton known as "high town". Known also as a pub for Luton Town football supporters.
absinthe_boy - 7 Nov 2012 13:41
On balance this is probably the best pub in Luton, though it's not exactly up against stiff competition. Popped in on Friday night, five ales on tap, with two more being added as the barrels were changed mid evening. Well, you've got to try them all...
AubreyMontague - 30 Apr 2012 21:06
HighTown's finest pub
Good beer, friendly ambiance
and quirky to boot
Luton_Haiku - 4 Jul 2011 12:01
Dropped in while awaiting a connecting train and found the locals friendly enough on a busy Sat night and beer was good. This is probably your best bet for proper beer in Luton especially if you arrive by train as the other alternatives are a bit of a trek across town.
anonymous - 16 Jan 2011 16:53
Funnily enough I can see both sides to this. It is a wonderful pub and it has a great community. If you're not part of it it is a bit daunting. But that's often the way with such things. So two questions... How does the quiz work: can I just turn up on my tod and join in? Does it matter that I support Watford?
watfordpete - 27 Sep 2010 19:46
Wonderful pub, superb beer, now includes a mild, top landlady and very friendly and helpful barstaff. When we've been on a long away day watching Luton, it's always great to get back to the brickies.
tophatter64 - 18 Sep 2010 15:56
Go to 'The Brickies' with an open mind, open heart and good manners and you will not find a better pub in the land.

As with most pubs the locals and barstaff will not respond kindly to people who believe themselves to be a cut above! Go there with an attitude (like some self proclaimed experts who having nothing better to do than post acidic comments at the dead of night) and you will only get reflected back your own ethos and attitude, which is not a pleasant one!

Great pub, great beer, great people, great barstaff (probably because there are generally female, but that's a personal preference) and a great landlady who works extremely hard for her customers and has done for the last 20 or so years.
brickiesgolf - 17 Sep 2010 11:17
Warning Warning bulls```t alert last 5 comments from one person who drinks in one pub and one pub only.

I've only been to this pub once, but I found the atmosphere to be very welcoming and friendly.
msmith - 17 Sep 2010 08:47
This pub have been a big part of my life over the last 20 years, seeing me through boyfriends, university, house moves, different jobs, marriage, child & everything - it is the place to share happiness, meet new friends and drag your old friends too. It is the starting point of evenings & one for the road at the end of an evening out, and many nights the bit inbetween.... A great place for football and to test the grey matter at the quiz on a monday night. I count myself lucky to be part of a great pub community - bring on the next 20 years!!!!
nmanix - 17 Sep 2010 08:47
I suggest RedRoosterRocker must be mistaking the 'Brickies' for a more inferior boozer down the road.
A welcoming atmosphere from my first visit, and I have never had anything other than a great pint poured by the great bar staff.
What more could a person require of a town pub?
The best and friendliest pub in Luton by a country mile!
dom_drums - 17 Sep 2010 06:59
I first walked in to this pub 20 years ago, armed with little more than a postgrad grant. I now have life long friends and an extensive knowledge of ale. My favourite pub!
thelambchop - 17 Sep 2010 04:42
THIS IS A PUB I NEVER FEEL COMFORTABLE IN.

WHEN YOU WALK IN THERE IS A HUDDLE OF REGULARS CROWDED AROUND THE BAR WHO DO NOT MOVE OUT OF THE WAY TO LET YOU SEE WHAT REAL ALE IS ON SALE AND IF YOU ARE FORTUNATE THAT ONE OF THEM STIRS A FEW INCHES EITHER WAY YOU ARE A GREETED BY A COLD PATRICIAN MEMBER OF STAFF WHO SERVES YOU UP A LESS THAN GOOD PINT.

I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS PLACE GETS IN THE GOOD BEER GUIDE EVERY YEAR...I REALLY DO NOT KNOW.....

..

RedRoosterRocker - 31 Aug 2010 03:13
Great pub, great beer, very friendly.
aleatheart - 17 Oct 2009 16:16
Handy for the station (leave from the High Town side - not towards the town centre and you pass two other 'pubs' before you reach it), it is probably one of only two or three decent pubs in Luton. Beer is generally quite good but they do have the odd off day but even when they do it's a long trek to the Brewers or the Globe which are the only other alternatives.
anonymous - 8 Sep 2009 21:52
Have to say the beer quality was struggling Mon eve, 3 of 4 beers tried were far from good. Let's hope it was just a blip (possibly the indecisive weather - atmospheric influence?). Further to my earlier comment, the HBs did look a little happier.
trainman - 16 Jul 2009 08:33
I really can't see what people see in this pub. I've been several times now with different friends at differing times of the day and - whilst the pub itself is lovely - I find that the people who run it are unwelcoming to anyone but the regulars. Last friday I recieved short measure after short measure - topped up with me having to ask and done begrudgingly. I can't see myself coming back here again. This may be "Luton's best pub", but that's only because of the quality of the others in the town keeps it so high.
littledrummerboy - 6 Jul 2009 15:12
Top-notch real ale boozer with friendly service and a good atmosphere.
adamcroft - 30 Jun 2009 10:10
Was in here early Saturday evening. It was OK and the Stella was OK too.
Stella_mad_Martyn - 22 Jun 2009 16:49
Top notch establishment. Good show.
Houghton_Conquest_CBE - 29 May 2009 12:47
Very good honest pub. Very friendly and greeat selection of real ales
gerrykh - 4 Apr 2009 00:21
Everards Tiger & Beacon, B&T Wembley Wobble, Milton Pegasus, Tring Royal Poacher went, immediately replaced by Ramsbury Gold. Attractive woody look to the pub and warm ambience as you enter, bar to left of front room, wood tables&chairs, 3 tall barrels provide glass support & good view of plasma opposite bar (showing rugby ystdy), bookcase shelves either side give a homely feel. Further on to a second, smaller, room with a scattering of small tables and a tv quietly showing skysports news. Apparently gets busy pre-match if Luton are at home, but no sign of glass-backlog or anything when we arrived at 15:20. The 8.60 round (3pints) was the dearest of the day up here, and the exterior hanging baskets really need replanting to give a more cared-for look, but I very much liked the pub.
trainman - 22 Mar 2009 09:51
Excellent traditional pub tucked away in a back street behind Luton Rail station that I wouldnt have been able to find without the help of BITE. Yes, as mentioned the front door is very solid and unless you are 7 ft tall and can see over the curtains, no chance to see inside. Because of this it is not very welcoming to the stranger, but fortunately I had the courage of my convictions and ventured in.
Previous posts have described the pub well so Ill just add that it is a no nonsense, no frills wooden table and chairs interior set up for socialising and drinking. And this is what you should do with five hand pumps dispensing the Everards Tiger and Beacon and three guest ales, one of which last night was Batemans XXXB. It also has continental lagers on tap for those who are of that persuasion and I recognised Leffe and Hoegaden. But I stuck to the Tiger, which was very good.
So if you are catching or meeting a train at the Station I can thoroughly recommend the Bricklayers as a place to pass the time.

Gann - 6 Feb 2009 18:09
This place has a very solid front door which makes it difficult to know whether it is actually open. However, once inside, what you get is a basic - somewhat old-fashioned - community pub (i.e. a thoroughly good thing). Had a pint of ?somebody's? Extra Pale Ale which looked slightly hazy but tasted just fine. Very handy for the station too.
rpadam - 30 Jan 2009 21:08
Part traditional, real ale pub, part Luton Town FC pub, bit of an odd combination, but this place seems to pull it off effortlessly. Decent selection of ales on offer (I plumped for the Yellow Snow - sucker for stupid names), the pub comprises of two rooms, both of which were fairly packed just 20 minutes or so after opening.
Thought it was clean and cosy with a good atmosphere. Points off for the fact that the pub sponsored the player who scored Luton's equaliser against my team last night!!
Pubsignman - 3 Dec 2008 17:57
Busy and lively both yesterday afternoon and early evening, popular with football supporters with a large plasma in the front bar and a smaller screen in the little back room showing games. Very much a LTFC fans pub (even the tiles in the gents are in club colours) but absolutely no problems with our sizeable group of visitors setting up in the back room. The front bar has bookcases either side of the central chimney/ TV, whereas the back room has a homely feel with various pictures including an old map showing the pubs of the former Wm Youngers estate.
Efficient and friendly service, very good beer, Everards Tiger and Beacon are the house beers, supplemented yesterday by Milestone Plot and Treason, Slaters Premium, Burton Bridge Tall Order with something from Mauldons replacing the Slaters when it went. Recommended.
Maldenman - 9 Nov 2008 11:52
Excellent traditional pub close to Luton town centre. I had a couple of terrific pints in there and will certainly come back again when I'm next in Luton.
Mog - 4 Nov 2008 22:59
Thought Id go and see what all the fuss was about. What I found was a really nice old pub, well decorated, with old books and pub memorabilia adorning the walls and some large barrels that double up as tables. Good selection of beers including a couple of ciders and some continental draft stuff in addition to the real ales. A bit disappointing that although it was a good selection there were no real ales on over 4.3%. Good pub with a nice community feel to it and I can see why it is popular. Gets a good 7/10 from me which might raise to 8/10 if subsequent visits are as good.

Millay - 3 Aug 2008 23:08
I might suggest that "nice enough" is enough to make a place special in Luton... meanwhile, dependable stalwart though it is, is Tiger ever special? But, anyway, apologies "Bart" for any offence. Thankfully the pub has managed to accrue enough negative feedback (no doubt from discerning local drinkers) to take it out of the Top 40...
Clive_Pendleton - 2 Jun 2008 10:55
Just read the last review on this place. I didn't give this place a bad rating and said I would be back. The landlord needs to watch his regulars if he wants to have a business!
bart.simpson - 29 May 2008 23:17
Blimey, getting into the top ten certainly attracts the bitchy comments doesnt it? Maybe it isnt the best pub in the world, but then Im not sure how much value can be held in the opinions of recent contributors such as Mr bilbosballbags. Meanwhile comments about BITE coming of age from a contributor calling him/herself Bart Simpson should be given the respect they deserve.
One wonders if Bart and Bilbo are old enough to get into pubs, let alone ever visited The Brickies in their lives or are just sad detractors blighting what, in the main, is a decent site? Just dont let your local dare creep into the Top Ten.
Still, for what its worth, and as its five minutes walk from my house, The Bricklayers Arms is an excellent hostelry and welcome to all (including fictional characters, if they can behave).

Clive_Pendleton - 29 May 2008 10:47
A nice place but not special. Worth its 5 minutes of fame but once B.I.T.E. comes of age would never get a look in. Had Tiger which was not special. Also had a mild which was ok. 7/10 but no more. If in the area again will visit.
bart.simpson - 29 May 2008 10:06
Visited recently. 5 ales were on,2 from Everards(Beacon and Tiger),Ramsbury Gold,Nethergate Marys Ruby Mild and Coverdale Norman Pride. Had Ramsbury which was fine, and Coverdale which was slightly cloudy but tasted delicious and proved the old point that you don't drink with your eyes.

Good traditional feel to the pub,and it was noted that the place was incredibly clean throughout, though without the stench of cleaning fluids or air freshners. Barwoman/landlady was pleasant but had little to say except when serving the beer. Reasonable prices,2.50/60 ish.

Overall a good, olde worlde, real pub. Deserving of a spell in the top 10 but not the best in the land. Still there are thousands of pubs all over the country who should take a look at this one. And learn.
an_ecunemical_matter - 26 May 2008 22:22
NOT SECOND ANY MORE, DON'T THEY SELL DIGI CAMERAS IN
LUTON ???
bilbosballbags - 26 May 2008 00:23
3 days still no Photies.
some customers.,
bilbosballbags - 24 May 2008 23:51
If its such a good pub why has no one taken a photo of it
considering its No2.
bilbosballbags - 21 May 2008 00:49
Only been in here for the quiz night and even though me and my work colleagues shook things up taking the regulars tables the quiz master and other bar staff have always been friendly. Good atmosphere, well organised quiz and homely interior.
awehla - 14 May 2008 14:43
Easily the best pub in Luton. I've been a regular for over 20 years, and if anything it's getting better.
Gareth_Pendleton - 12 May 2008 13:17
Friendly pub (customers and staff) and very well run. If there's a crowd in, the number of staff is increased so there's still immediate service. The only food seen was filled rolls, but they were good; great selection of real ales constantly changing - though no dark ones. Really handy for the station.
Trev - 15 Feb 2008 20:05
Best pub in Luton!.. the Guinness is always good, the range of guest beers contstantly changes... if you get bored of that.. try the Belgan ones!

Lacks women.. but gets called the old mans pub by my friends... hey.. conversation and good beer!
vidiotdave - 2 Sep 2007 19:28
Found this place by accident with a couple of friends going as away fans to Luton.
It's a wonderful pub; very well kept beer with guests, friendly and mixed clientele, good choice of wine, bits and pieces of food as well. Saying it's the best pub in Luton by a mile would be damning it with faint praise; this would be an excellent pub wherever it's location and well deserves it's high rating.
mps77 - 2 Aug 2007 15:38
The nearby English Rose, Ive heard argued, their having jumped on the real ale bandwagon recently, serves a better pint. Im not convinced. The Bricklayers has also seemingly managed to alienate the local CAMRA folk their Beer in Beds publication recently suggested a pub crawl of the HighTown area that ridiculously (and/or petulantly) missed the Brickies out, while the pub only ever gets runners up awards at the loal CAMRA best pub award year after year. This is daft. The Bricklayers Arms is a fantastic place easily the best pub in town and goes a long way into making life in Luton, and supporting our rubbish football team, extremely bearable.
Sebastian_Jinks - 1 Aug 2007 10:21
good to see nothing has changed here ! useful bolt hole when the train service is shagged up !
moclips2002 - 8 Jul 2007 11:54
A great liitle pub. Just what Luton needs.
anonymous - 6 Jun 2007 16:15
One of the best. Simple, and honest with well kept beer.
gkay - 21 May 2007 02:20
Just moved to the area and tried this pub. Friendly, good ale, nice atmosphere, will be using on a regular basis.
steviec56 - 10 May 2007 20:21
If you are at Luton station please have a look in this place. It is great. You could spend all day in some places looking for a pub like this and never find one. Beer range excellent and well kept.
pxk99 - 6 May 2007 18:00
Fantastic pub. A little idyll in the not always so pleasant centre of Luton.
Xavier_Poisson - 7 Mar 2007 10:54
friendly local selling Everards and changing guest beers from small breweries. A pub par-excellence.
moclips2002 - 2 Feb 2007 19:55
Ales always in tip-top condition - and a good choice. Very handy for the rail station.
wobblybob - 30 Dec 2006 11:53
This was also the first pub id visited in Luton, and I guarantee its going to be the best.It has a good local feel with well kept and interesting beers. Can they transport it to another town perhaps?
Henners - 16 Nov 2006 19:20
My first visit to a pub in Luton, and scores highly! Excellent beer, great traditional atmosphere and a very fine cheese and onion roll.
Captain_Swing - 29 Aug 2006 13:11
Luton isn't the nicest place in the world to have a drink which makes this good old fashioned, friendly boozer all the better.
Fantastic place.
Dean_Pritchard - 15 Aug 2006 09:35
Handy location, the "wrong" side of the station. An island of sanity in the branded leisure gear desert of central Luton pubbery. The Salem porter was particularly bewitching.
qpp1963 - 28 Nov 2005 18:06
By far the best/friendliest pub in Luton.
Great locals, including the bloke sat at the bar supping Guiness and the Posh goit counting out enough change for his next pint of Beacon.
Good selection of music on juke box, always played at an appropriate volume, (very rare).
DomDrums - 30 Aug 2005 12:48
Definitely one of the best pubs in the world. The beer is always good and varied, if, sometimes a bit cold.
It can be very Luton F C at times but that is to be expected.

bonzoid0 - 22 Mar 2005 22:07
I moved to Luton in May, and I have 3 other pubs within 200 yards of my house... but I walk 15 mins to get to this pub!.... I think that explains all... I always order what ever is on the left hand ale pump... it's always different!... Lovely Pub, Lovely atmosphere... relaxed... as opposed to all the town centre pubs...
Well Done Alison.. (the landlady!)... .also voted number 2 by CAMRA in Sth Bedforshire..
the only thing this pub is missing is totty... although a Sat night has a lovely barmaid!
vidiotdave - 6 Nov 2004 23:28
Best pub in the world. Easily. The quiz machines occasionally play up, but then that's the biggest quibble.

K1, High Town - 22 Sep 2004 12:10
Friendly pub... but really wouldn't recommend wearing the wearing of Watford shirts (likely to cause regionalist, not to mention sartorial, offence). Excellent ales. Rubbish quiz machines.
Dave Hooks - 20 Aug 2004 11:56
All true. If ever you're in between trains, go have a drink in here rather than hang around the station. Luton is a shit-hole, and they don't like furreners.
Vasili - 28 Jul 2004 17:13
There is something a little special about this pub which is different to so many pubs in Luton (Whitbread/Greene King derivatives) it feels like it belongs to the owners, I do beleive it is a freehouse and will stock different ales each time you go there. It does have two TV's, which show the football. The owners are quite strict and will not let any bums drink there. It has a very much alternative feel to it. It is comfortable, some may call it quirky but I am an independent and I like it. It also has a huge affiliation to Luton Football Club and I am a Watford Supporter and I am never put off from going in there. I even watched Watford on the screen with my Watford shirt on and I did get a little abuse but I had my had shook at the end of the night. Any other pub I may have had my head pummelled into the ground.
Doofer - 6 Aug 2003 16:37
The Brickies is a freindly pub with a wide selection of lagers, stout and real ales (Everards)as well as guest beers which are always changing.

The interior is all wood, bookshelves and huge beer barrels for tables at the front.

Great staff, no trouble, food during the day. Pub quiz during the week.

This is one of only two pubs in Luton to feature in the Good Pub Guide. Avoid other pubs in this area, especially in the evening.

Near the train station if you happen to be stuck in Luton for an hour.
