Wow... First visit in twelve months and the place has really changed... A total refit that has really smartened the place up... As I have mentioned before, I have always liked this pub, so pleased to report it is still the friendly, warm place it was before, just with better decor! The upper level now seems more open to the bar which helps... Beers good as always; Woodfordes Tinsel toes, St.Austell Proper job plus two Adnams - Ghost ship and Lighthouse. Food is slightly more expensive, but always seems busy, so probably justified. My eleven year old missed the pool table though!

Great as usual, visited twice over the Christmas period; First after a walk around Aberton reservoir, then again Christmas day. Great range of ale; Woodfordes Wherry, Woodfordes Tinsel Toes, Maldon Gold & ‘Nutcrackered’ from The Mighty Oak Brewing Co among others. Always busy and always a friendly welcome. Food was good pub fayre. This pub survives and prospers by doing the simple things well; It also turns it's hand to other things, for example B&B, shop, book swap, deli, café etc...

Visited again a couple of times in Dec over the Christmas period. Still has that warm, welcoming feel...

Beers on offer were the old favourite Red Fox Bitter 3.8% from down the road in Coggeshall, Woodfordes Once Bittern 4.0%, Lacons St Nicks 4.2% from Great Yarmouth & Hop back's Elf and Hoppiness abv 3.9%. Food looked good as well...

Good local pub... Have spent a few christmas holidays @ Rye farm and can definately recommend The Layer Fox. Good local feel, nice warm open fire and good range of beers. Red Fox (Coggeshal), Rockin Rudolph etc... Good food as well

Enjoyed a number of pints of Red Fox (Coggeshal) Bitter and Fools Gold. - pretty good........ if possibly a little cold (but that's mainly personal taste)
Evening meal OK - typical pub grub
A definite locals pub, community oriented with friendly atmosphere
Small deli counter and cash machine !
Very good B&B faciities, with very acceptable full english breakfast (no toileteries in bathroom - not a proble for us, we had our own).
Worth a visit if passing or needing a B&B in the area.

Enterprising attractive pub with separate cafe area, a good mix of customers, and an OK beer. A good place to come after the zoo, I'd guess.

Visited about 3 times during the autumn and happy to return on each occasion. Four good beers on including the aforementioned Red Fox beers and a couple of others rarely seen for the area. Beers now 3.20 a pint. The food is first class although some is outstanding. The ham, eggs and chips was the largest I'd come across and presented unconventionally. I was told that the food is bought from the local butcher and you can certainly taste the difference. Sunday lunch is well worth a look.
The most interesting feature is the split level. Upstairs is a large area containing a large sofa but plenty of more conventional tables. Very friendly service - remembered on subsequent visits. This is the type of place I wish I lived nearer to. Far enough away from Colchester to remain unspoilt.

Visited recently and found four decent ales that were very well kept. Food was excellent. Very friendly staff. All in all a good experience. Could do without the pool table but hey, I'm an old codger! Will certainly visit again.

Good visit here last night and pleased to see three real ales on. There would have been four had the other hand pump not broken. Mighty Oak Barber Shop, Red Fox Bitter and Hydes Over a Barrel available. Red Fox beers are a regular fixture which seems to fit in with the pub name. Good to see the support for two local breweries. All pints are priced at 3.00 and all beer tasted good. It is a large beamed pub on two levels and suited to providing food. The food served whilst we were there smelled good as it passed. Perhaps I will try next time I visit. A large screen televison is on the wall next to the entrance/exit and was showing the Liverpool v Lille game. The TV was turned off after the football finished which was good to see. A quiz/games machine is also available. The service at the bar was friendly and polite and a fresh glass was offered after every drink.
