please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

First thing we noticed was a tosser with an iPad. Not a good start. Pubs like this are overrated, average food served with a sprinkling of parsley doesn't make it good food and doesn't mean you can command £12 for a dish. Staff were over the top and loud, would be more suited to a Wetherspoons environment. Not many ales here either.

Disappointed as the other pubs in this chain are okay.

If you want a Pub , try the Old House , the Golding Hop or the Padwell. If you want a very nice lunch and someone else is paying the Chaser works. Not a Pub for beer drinlers. It is an out and out gastro pub and it does it well

What a surprise! After a gap of twenty years, we returned here to find a smart, clean friendly gastro pub with friendly and courteous bar staff. The bangers & mash were excellent as was the Hardy & Hansons bitter. We sat in the quiet conservatory and chatted whilst reading the newspapers provided. One of the best pubs we've visited for months. No loud muzac, no loud people, just comfortable chatty atmosphere. 9/10.

Fantastic gastro pub with nice garden and several areas to sit, will alow the dog at the front bar. Gets really busy in the evening so if your eating I would book. Food of late has not been as good as it used to be but the staff as ever are friendly and welcoming.
Also a good spot to go walking from.

Top gastro type pub. Very friendly staff good food and a lovely old building to enjoy it all in, decent courtyard area outside in the summer.
Can get very busy, especially in the early evenings, so if youre going to eat, its worth booking.

Not a huge beer selection if your just going for a drink. The Abbott was fine on my last visit.

Lovely pub, lovely food and generally polite staff, only problem is, sevice is a bit slow! Other than that, no complaints, would go back there, bit pricey tho! Nice beer garden. Quite chilled if thats what your looking for..

This is a beautiful food pub in a beautiful setting.

Unfortunately, this place can be a little busy - often good to book in advance which can take away the pleasure of a spontaneous visit.

Some of the best pub food I have ever had, although as a minor gripe, perhaps the menu could do with more seasonal changes - I guess because it's always busy, it may be a case of if it aint broke dont fix it...

Genuinely a great place to eat, without trying to be a gastro pub. Also consider the sister pub - Little Brown Jug in Chiddingstone which often has a slightly better selection of ales, and serves bigger portions of the same delicious fayre.

Went there for a quick pint or two on Monday afternoon -- the Hyde's Jekyll's Gold was very good and there were a couple of other ales on, as well as the obligatory Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale. However, it's clear the place is more of a restaurant than a pub and I'm afraid it seemed to fail quite badly on this front. 'Food served all day' actually means food when they choose serve it -- one old dear approached to order some desert only to be told by the barman that he'd "have to check" if anyone was available to prepare it!! Other diners experienced similar problems -- including one guy who got quite irate as he'd already cracked open a bottle of wine to go with a lunch he was told he couldn't buy as all the chefs were "in a meeting". Given the prices (e.g. 10 for a burger and chips and around 6 for a starter) you can understand why they were annoyed -- the place clearly positions itself as a 'gastropub' but seemed to struggle to deliver even though it was less than half full. The setting is incredibly pretty, the beer was pretty good and it's a very nice old building -- but on yesterday's performance I would avoid it if you are planning to eat there.

'Service could be quicker if the bar area wasn't clogged with folks sitting on stools'! Strangely enough, they're sitting on stools at the bar in order to enjoy a drink - which is what pubs used to be all about. But yes, come on, let's get rid of them. Perhaps they could take their offensive stools outside, and join the banished smokers.

Well kept selection of real ales and good quality food in sizeable portions, though you pay for what you get here. This is a busy place at weekends and once served the food arrives quite quickly. Service could be quicker if the bar area wasn't clogged with folks sitting on stools. And you can pay when you order if you ask, in response to the comment below. Recommended.

Enjoyed my first visit to the pub last saturday, good beer selection, very good food and not a bad place to go for lunch. Have to say the queues at the bar can be frustrating, perhaps the pub should take the money with the food order first instead of taking a card with the order then making people come back and pay later, it just doubles the conjestion. But a lovely pub in great surroundings.

I used to live near here and used this place quite a lot . Yes the beers are usually in top condition and the location is great . It is though to be fair a place for eating ...if you want a pint and some atmosphere you do tend to just be in the way . The food is usually good , they do have their off days but generally good . It can take an age to get served sometimes as food orders are taken over the bar as well .
In my opinion this is not a classic country pub but it is a well run busy restaurant with a bar .

This is what pubs are all about, warmth, fresh food, cold beer, charming staff. Highly reccomeneded.

Well,I finally got round to visiting this much hyped establishment in its present incarnation -I've had a passing acquaintance with it, over the years, in a number of varying guises.
I can't say that there's much wrong with it - it's just that it's a style that leaves me cold - literally, in fact, today, since the place was packed, and the only way to get a seat was to go into the garden. And that's nice enough; even nicer in the summer when Shipbourne green's a mass of wild flowers. But it wasn't what I was looking for today, when what I wanted was a couple of nice lunchtime pints in a congenial atmosphere. And no food.
That's the trouble, because when it comes down to it, food's what they do here, and there's not a lot of space for non-eaters (though I have to say that the beer was in first-rate nick).
But all in all I was grateful to move on a few miles up the road to a real pub atmosphere at The Old House.

A nice pub but not up to the "rave" reviews here, the ales were good and the food was OK, overall 6/10

Loads of atmosphere and well worth a visit whether you're eating or not.

Can get very crowded.

Terrific pub - great food, shame it's greene king beer! Well kept however. Top pub, top grub, if you haven't been in here since it was renovated, GO IN, it will be wirth the journey.

I ate at the Chaser last night (Thursday). Delightful setting, friendly, cheerful staff, clean tables and chairs, largely smoke-free, and excellent food. I had leek and potato soup to start (served with 2 big chunks of crusty bread) which was very good, and a home-made burger with chips as my main course, which I was unable to finish. The burger was superb - cooked well, served with bacon and cheese.

Excellent pub, highly recommended although I suspect you'll need to book at weekends since the place was packed on a weekday!

Good atmosphere good food nothing negative to say about it the best pub in that area.

Excellent pub in the Kent countryside. Daily menu change makes for an interesting visit. Food very good quality and choice. Pub itself has a nice feel about it.
janetholmes - 27 May 2006 18:49
One of the best pubs around, always busy, food is great, beer is well kept by people who care. great heated court yard. This is what a good pub is all about
anonymous - 14 Feb 2006 13:39
Excellent food, well kept real ale. Only problem (last Sunday lunchtime) was the plethora of small children running in and out of the building allowing the ingress of arctic blasts of freezing air. Could I suggest either a porch or - for the festive season - a Herod-like cull of local small children.

This is the greatest pub in Kent. Owned by a shrude enthusiast that knows his food, beer and wine. Open fires, proper Gastro-Menu, friendly staff, beautiful location.
