First of 10 Essex pubs sampled on a very hot Wednesday evening. 3 ales were on - George's Victory Ale, Brains The Rev James & Sharps Doom Bar. Ciders were Westons Twist Raspberry & Old Rosie. Although I thought £2.33 for half was bit excessive. The interior was light and airy, which made it quite a refreshing escape from the heat.

Good food, great ale but it would be nice to see a larger selection. Staff are friendly, especially like Amy, cocky and full of banter but I like that! I would recomend this place, good for sport and music on the odd occastion.

I hate it when pubs get too cliquey, especially when the clique seems to be the staff versus the clientele.
This certainly seems to have become the case the last few times I’ve visited the Victory.
It’s a shame, as it’s still a half-decent local, but I’ve spent one too many times now waiting for the staff to finish their chats before serving, tolerating a forced lack of “please” or “thank you” and, on one occasion, having one particular little charmer announce to her colleagues, “Are we going to let this one use a credit card?”
In an era when dozens of pubs close each month, surely the chains should be beating their staff into submission over basic customer service and politeness. Apparently not at the Victory. John Barras take heed.

Haven't been here for a while but the place seems to continue on serving the outer perimeter of the Rochford/Ashingdon community. I've ate and drank in here - the ale was good last time out and the regulers fine. Worth a drop by.

Excellent refurb job.

The pub now looks and feels like a friendly place, as opposed to Racist Pete's personal fiefdom. The beer is well-kept, and for the time being at least, the bogs appear to be working. I'll continue to wear leather shoes in there just in case, though.

Well done. A huge improvement.

Just a quick update. I saw the last poster mention that the pub is in need of a refurb. Well, lo and behold, the Victory was closed for a week and re-opened all refurbed up at the start of December 2011.
Not a complete overhaul, but new carpeting, upholstery and some new drinks (mmmm San Miguel!).
Didn't get to sample the toilets, but surely they will have addressed this also.
Looks nicer, San Miguel was splendid and the place was packed on a Saturday late afternoon. Menu still the same as previous, so nothing special.
Looks better and smells a heck of a lot nicer!

Visited recently, popular locals pub ,management seems to be changing, probably a good thing as pub is popular for its food but the place is dirty and toilets terrible, needs a refurb, however the three cask ales were fine although rather expensive.

we came in on sunday18th july, people were lovely, went to order was told 40 mins ,i said thats fine,an hour later we got our meal, but even still, that was ok,when we got our meal,it was just awful.new potatoes were all bad, broccolli was yellow and hard, peas were like bulletts,so were the carrotts, so no we didnt enjoy our meal, shame really because you couldnt fault the staff,so no we wont be going back, the rating of 5 is for the staff.

Decent enough local pub (very local for me!) with standard range of hearty, rather than delicious, pub grub. The garden is nice for a summer pint and lots of play equipment for the kids. Clientele usually made up of older regulars who occupy the seats just inside the door, and builders/tradesmen who set up a cordon around the slot machines. A downside is that, although there is a covered smoking area in the back garden, many smokers (particularly the young lads) tend to mill around just outside the main pub entrance with their fag and pint, leaving families to run this gauntlet should they choose to enter. As this slightly intimidating sight is clearly visible from the main road, I can't help wondering if this is an affecting factor when people are deciding whether to pop in for a quickie...

The standard of beerkeeping has vastly improved recently, and they've have earned a well-deserved Cask Marque award.

overpriced for the area

im dissapointed that the commments from obviosly regular customers do not reflect the family atmosphere that all enjoy at the vic. It seems that the company cannot dicide the difference between company and marketing policy, finance and budget against what actually occurs at this inn. All pubs have thir goods and bads i feel this one serves the community and passing trade well and should not be subject to local frivolity that a major company would just not understand! The pubs about people they pay the bills and this one is there .

I've been regularly visiting the pub for the last year and not found a problem with the service or the food. I walk in, they see me coming from the car and pour my pint! Hardly poor service. Both the landlord and landlady are always friendly and chatty.

Only complaint I have is my legs don't fit under all the tables!

I've only drunk the real ales at the bar and they've always been fine - couldn't say much for the other rubbish.

The Victory Inn enjoys a healthy-ish crowd, due largely to it's position as the only pub for a good few miles between Rochford, Canewdon and Hockley.

Aside from the Thursday evening pub quiz, which is fun, and the occasional karaoke / disco nights, a taxi to one of Rochford's finer pubs is money well spent. The service here is at best inadequate, and the beerkeeping sub-standard. A recent refit has improved the ambience slightly after years of smoke and stale beer in the furnishings and fittings, but the staff and landlord still have improvements to make.
