Another great find. Doesnt look much from the outside, but large inside with a couple of fine rooms off the back. Long bar with a selection of English Guest ales first noticed. Excellent Theakstons XB.
Football on discreetly and a selection of newspapers to read through. Comfortable place and would come back.

A very old fashioned place full of character. as previous posters have said. Had a good pint of the Belhaven Festival Ale here yesterday. It was quiet but I liked it a lot. Smashing fish and chip place round the corner too.

Looks a bit daunting from outside but a delight inside, an old-style traditional bar with ornate fittings and more importantly a friendly welcome and a good choice of four real ales. Well worth a visit and only about a 10 minute downhill stroll from the plethora of Rose Street bars but of course after sampling a few the uphill return walk might take a bit longer.

First visit to this pub while doing the rounds of GBG pubs, and found it a bit confusing ordering real ale due to the fonts. Was told the non handpulls were cask ale. Enjoyed both the beers we tried though.

Fine old bar but on my recent visit the Caledonian 80/- was pure vinegar! Must have been in the pipes for years!

I see what you mean about the murals. Above average pub, good beer, worth dropping in. I'd be happy to come back for an evening's libation.

Used to live round the corner in early eighties. Visited this week, delighted to find nothing had changed in 25 years. A proper pub with all that is best about the bar culture which appears to be alive and well in Scotland but has been smothered by family friendly and themed pubs South of the border. Good beer, company and atmosphere. If it was not so cold I would move back.

Agreed Aig_Wilson. A quality pub.
Check out the murals in the corridors near the toilets to give you a feel of the area before it was all trendy.
Great pub

A proper Edinburgh boozer: Gantry bar - check. Maroon Veitchi flooring - check. Maroon vinyl seating - check. 80 bob - check. Licensee who's been looking after proper beer for 30 years - check. Regular crowd of >300 - check. Clark's is the real deal.
