A glorious interior that is topped off by a ceiling that somehow manages to trump everything but this pub, despite a goodly selection of beers, attracts too many men of a certain age (mine, as it turns out) to be truly enjoyable. The stark lighting could also be dimmed. Fullers’ Red Fox was a decidedly Sassenach choice on our visit.

Been here before but it took the CAMRA Pub Walk in Edinburgh to really point out its beauty.
Look to the ceiling. Look to the tiling. Look to the central Island Bar.
A 1st Timothy Taylor Mild consumed in one of the nicer pubs in Rose Street.

Really good old style pub. Décor & island bar Victorian. 5 real ales. Very friendly & service-oriented staff. Have eaten here too & food just fine. WiFi by O2, but free after a fussy registration. Nice atmosphere - we'll be back.

Very good pub and well worth a visit. Beer was good and served quick. Very victorian interior, yet one more to add to my "must visit again" list.

Another good nicholsons pub on Rose Street. Part of literary tour and Scottish beer was good. got a pint replaced after it tasted off. Old fashioned décor like many in area so another to add to the list.

Excellent beer and tasty grub - not the cheapest of pubs but pretty good for the location; helpful and welcoming staff. Definitely one to list in my mental pub guide.

Another of the city's must see heritage pubs. Wooden island bar, tiled walls, high ceiling with ornate decoration and "chapel like" high level leaded windows. According to the verbage it was all carefully restored around 1981. Very clean and beautifully presented . An excellent looking pub. Several cask ales on offer.

This is now run by Nicholsons but does not have such an extensive range of ales as others in the chain. However, terrific decor and cheery staff coupled with a good pint made fort a nice visit. Well worth missing some of the other in Rose Street pubs for!!

Nice pub - had three ales on when I was there - Duchars IPA, Caledonian 80/ and Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted. I had the last one, it would not pour proper so the barman went out back and must o moved barrel as it came out cloudy. Cloudy beer don't bother me much and it tasted OK though not the best B&T I've ever had. 2.95 pint.

One of Rose Street's few pubs that are really worth seeking out. The Kenilworth is an opulent place on the CAMRA National Inventory, largely thanks to the huge front room with its high ceilings and massive square island bar. The tiling and ceiling in here are something else, and it's a fantastically grand place to enjoy a pint from Caledonian or a Scottish microbrewery, as the pub serves a variety of these- in handled pint pots if requested, which I usually do. There's some rather less remarkable rooms through the back which are commonly used by diners. The food here is reasonably priced and served all day, and it's a better bet than many nearby eateries. Always try to visit when in Edinburgh.

A lot of pubs in Rose Street are changing but this one is much as I remembered from a few years ago, a good traditional and attractive pub. The only downside is that the large central bar doesnt leave much room for customers to move around during busy periods.

Handily placed if you've been in the Cafe Royal, had a few, dropped into Fopp Records and bent the plastic, and then need a pee ! What is it with Edinburgh pubs - the ceilings are works of art, and the beer exceeds expectations.

This pub offers it all, a great interior, five real ales and good food.

I've a load of time for this bar. Could have done with a few extra bar staff on Saturday afternoon/night but was fine on Friday. Food was great.
|
Has a fine choice of real ales which are kept in an excellent condition. Food menu is the same as the Conan Doyle. Interior is as described by Millay with the seating arranged around the wall. Fruit machine does seem out of place though.

I had returned to this gem of a pub on a flying visit to Edinburgh just recently. I used to stay in Edinburgh and this pub was always one of my favourite drinking holes. The place has not changed greatly, thank goodness and the Kenilworth is well worth a visit and my advice is spend some time here and enjoy the beer and surroundings. I will return again for sure.

Don't know how I missed this gem of a pub on previous visits to Edinburgh, perhaps it was as it is among the many dotted along Rose Street. A fairly unremarkable exterior is followed by a really impressive interior. It is a small square room, with an equally square bar in the middle that seems to almost reach the high decorative ceiling (a bit like the ornate ceiling at the Abbotsford). There are wonderful high stained glass windows and a large Drybrough Pale Ale brewery mirror dominates one wall. Much of the walls are decorated with small colourful tiles that add a bit of a Moroccan feel. There is a good range of both draught and bottled beers available and a small eating area out the back.
