Tarted up on the outside but still the same on the inside, complete with the huge painting of the battle of waterloo.
Full of tourists ordering from the whisky menu. I should of joined them - my pint (Edinburgh Gold, sampled in great condition over the road) was ghastly.
Still, had live music and a decent atmosphere. Would come again.

Despite being named after a hero of the Battle of Waterloo, this pub has a policy of refusing to serve military personnel in uniform! What a disgrace!

Regrettably, on a recent 3-day jaunt to Edinburgh, of what must've been 20 pubs visited, this was the weakest, at least in terms of its ale variety, quality and general atmosphere. Whilst one doesn't expect much of a boozer in the heart of tourist-territory, I felt this really needs to try harder. The pub interior was intriguing with various artefacts on the walls and a curious cavernous atmosphere. Initially my mate and I felt it was friendly enough, but as time unfolded things began to sour. The beer - the ubiquitous Caledonian 80 shilling - was decidedly average notwithstanding its hefty pricetag. The pass code system to use the toilets seemed petty. And, contrary to the last reviewer, we got the distinct impression non-local weren't welcome, althoug they're happy to take tourist money. When I came to use the hallowed gents, I used the code but it'd been changed. We also received some stony glares from one of the surly staff. Is this an anti-English sentiment? If so, it's sad, as this is the first pub in Scotland I've visited where I've felt any discernible hostility. Food looked pretty poor too! Sorry guys. This is a shameful effort compared to some of your competitors.

Hate this pub , landlord is unfriendly ,youre not encouraged to stay if youre not a tourist , place is full of bizarre rules like no standing at the bar etc , pin no required for the loo (i mean that is just a joke) and the food was disgusting .
youre better off at deacon brodies or the jolly judge .

I went with family this past Feb. and marked my birthday in Edinburgh. We had a great time and found this pub quite convenient to the castle. We stopped in for a late lunch and a few pints. We ordered a few pints of Calendonian 80 and Deuchars, both of which were fine and served by friendly staff. The food was good too- had a pizza, my brother wanted to try haggis. We enjoyed sharing all of it and found the haggis quite tasty. On my next visit to Edinburgh, I wouldn't hesitate to return here.

I was given a trip to edinburgh for a christmas present by my children and tried to see everything in 4 days. we went to the ensign for a meal on the way to the castle, which i found to be disgusting I ordered a omlet and salad., the omlet was folded in half and was to size of a CD when unfolded and the rest of the plate was covered in different coloured letteuce Qrt of a tomato and 2 slices of cucumber.I am afraid I eat only the Tiny omlet and left the rest my daughter had a jacket potato and that was green and hard and the plate was covered in the salad the same as I had. We left our food drunk our drink and warned the people just about to order a meal. (They got up and left) The pub itself had loads of character but the fool let it down.

Visited this bar last weekend, great little place, nice staff and very relaxed. Will go back next time. The password for the loo's is ..... ha ha

Quite agree - I was the only Brit in the place apart from the landlady. Slighly curious menu - never encounted an Italian tosted cheese sandwich before, but quite tasty and served with plenty of salad. Nice drop of beer served with a smile.

This is a nice wee bar, tucked away up by the castle, so it tends not to have many locals, more tourists. It has a code on the toilets to stop people coming in just to use the toilet! Sometimes has a bit of folk music, great for a winter evenings pint.
