Old-fashioned pub. Friendly enough staff. Real ale available. Interesting period features. Worth a visit.

Solid enough pub just up from the station. Nothing special in any shape or form but the best place for a convenient, half decent pint before your train.

Imposing building at the top of the main ramp leading down to Preston station. It looks Georgian / Victorian from the front, but the inside proves it to be older, with the main part featuring low pink painted beams and white plaster walls. However, the room at the back is obviously later and has a green decor.

As for the beer being served, all I can do is misquote the line for the Twelve Days of Christmas “five gold ales” ! There were several real ales on handpump, but they were all more or less the same ! I tried the Three B’s Doff Cocker, which was reasonable, but nothing special. There was a menu for basic food at very reasonable prices e.g. chips, sandwiches

6/10 – more genuine choice of ales would be appreciated !

After football I decided to blow my last pub in Burnley out to get to Preston early so I could tick The Old Vic, which was the nearest pub to the station that appears in the 2015 GBG.

The Old Vic is literally opposite the train station which means its perfect for a pit stop between trains which is exactly what I did. Its just after 6pm when I come in and it’s very busy, 2 bar staff on but they were experienced and served very quickly.

A few ale options with most of them from the local region, I opted for 2 pints of Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery Monumentale @ 4.5%. The ale was a bit more pricey here compared to Accrington & Burnley at £2.70 a pint.

I took my pints to the seating area at the back of the pub to rest my weary body and watch the “action below”…which mainly consisted of an inebriated chap stacking it in a corner, if he wasn’t so hammered he would of hurt himself.

The walls are covered with lots of old pictures of the station & town, there's also lots of plates on the shelves running around the back seating area.

The Old Vic is very much an old fashioned pub but it serves decent ale and is doing something right hence why it's so busy and appears in the GBG.

Will pop in again on my next visit to Preston.

A pretty ideal stopping off point and a better option by far than the station bar which is combined with an Upper Crust. Several rotating handpumps make up for the slightlly sour faced service and the transitory feel although a game of arrows was in full swing.

Has a rough and ready feel to it but it serves a reasonable pint and is handy for the station.

Nice pub, OK beer. Nothing terribly special but very close to the train station if you want to sneak a pint while waiting for a connection.

Average pub of average character; a bit impersonal, though with decent enough beer to warrant GBG entry and a quick visit.

Great pub that was busy - but we got a friendly welcome and some decent Moorhouse's ale.

Next to the train station.Has a decent choice of national & regional ales (up to 6 usually). However, the beers are served too cold...... and no end of complaining seems to have unbucked the trend.
Order your pint an hour before you want to drink.
They don't accept telephone orders in advance of a visit, I did try!!!!

I went in here with my wife the other week and was served a pint of Moorhouses Blonde Witch that both looked and tasted like it came from the bottom of the barrel. When I tried to change it the chap behind the bar told me it was like that because of the cask cooler. We won't be back.

The previous reviewer summed it up perfectly...and this is a great one for a quick pint between trains...if only every station had something this enticing nearby

Better than your average connecting-train-wait ale-house. Deceptively small, with neat selection of (local) ales. Still a bit on the no-frills side perhaps, but serves its purpose perfectly

Back in here for a swift celebratory drink after Saints came from 2 - 0 down to beat Preston. Beer range was more interesting than my last visit below, at least three Moorhouse beers and also Three Bs Doff Cocker.

Pub has recently undergone a refurd inside. The Seats and stools have all been upholstered and walls have painted. Looks really nice inside. Food is really good and variety of sports on the 2 big screens.

Stopped for a couple of pints while changing trains on the way to Blackpool. Theakstons Best, Directors, Deuchars, Pedigree and two Moorhouse beers, Blonde Witch and Pride of Pendel. Tried the latter two and they were both in good form.

Plenty of room and a very pleasant pub to spend some time, I even enjoyed the eighties music.

Good beers, decent food, sports on screen, pool table. If the inside was to be done & made a bit nicer up it'd be spot on.

A decent pub to use if you've got a half hour to spare inbetween trains - just opposite the main station entrance.

Although the exterior has recently been given a lick of paint, the interior is starting to look a little shabby although there are always 3 or 4 real ales to choose from.

Limited food menu available, and very small concrete beer garden.

A must visit if you are using the station, always friendly, nice food and often/always has newspapers out.
