Gosh, I am quite shocked about the negative comments about monkeynuts. I on the other hand am going to spread a little joy about the place.(crazy I know for a review website) My boyfriend took me there for a belated valentines dinner as he was away for the real thing. He had phoned ahead to ask for a bottle of bubbly to be served on arrival which was done so by a smiley waitress with some cheerful banter, this set off the night very nicely. We had starters, mains and desserts, all very yummy especially the chocolate brownie!! After our meal we moved to the sofa area and had some cocktails which were reccomended by the manager, which were also yummy and refreshing. By this time we were so full it was difficult to move but that was fine because we were quite happy to sit and soak up the buzzing atmosphere and have a laugh and a joke with the staff. We eventually left (when they were closing) and left extremely forfilled. The only bad thing I have to say is they wouldnt disclose the recipe for their brownies!!!! We have been back twice since and will def be back on a regular basis. Brilliant.

I take it The Monkey Nuts is not the Dogs Nuts then ???

Extremely disappointing. Probably the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. Rude staff making faces at customers. When I made a complaint the manager didn't even pretend to listen to me, just told me that she doesn't believe what I'm saying about her staff. Avoid it all cost, unless if you like being treated like a doormat.

I feel really silly. I've just had a really poor experience at Monkey Nuts and felt compelled to write it down (I'll also be writing to management because it's the third bad meal I've had this year - not sure why I kept going back, probably because my little one likes the monkeys and crayons).
Anyway ... Just scrolled down to read the other reviews and I came across one I'd left three years ago, under a different name. Yes, that's me, and I'd totally forgotten about that bad experience my friend had. (How, I don't know!)
In short, service is extremely slow and verging on rude (when you complain, even in a nice way). And complain I needed to do today. All food came out cold. Kid's fries undercooked. Veggie burger still frozen in the middle. My nachos were overcooked, cheese not melted, so much black pepper in the sour cream (??) it wasn't cooling at all, no black bean salsa - just stray, dried out black beans.
I actually do have stomach pains now, which started just after I left the place. Hoping that it's just that the food didn't agree with me, or because I'm pregnant. Food poisoning not good when pregnant ...
(To the person who was suspect of my earlier review - I rarely leave reviews; only do it when I've had a particularly had a bad meal, which Monkey Nuts seems to do very well! And I name dropped Pick more daisies because, well, it was my fave (sadly now closed down due to expensive rents) and I was gutted that I ended up taking my friends to Monkey Nuts and having an awful meal.)

I love it here! It is great for mums and babies / kids. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. They could do with turning down the music as the kids make enough noise without having to shout over it but they turned it down when we asked. The food is tasty and with lots to choose from you are not stuck for options. The lunch meal deal is what i have as its a good cheap option for burger chips/pot skins and drink for 8 quid. Well worth a visit.......high chairs are clean and in working order too!!

I went there to celebrate my brothers birthday with all the kids, was very dissapointed i had a very bland tasteless chicken Schnitzel burger ,childrens chicken meal had a funny taste they didnt like it,my sister had a bland steak sandwich which was all bread and no steak. This was my first and very last time i will visit this over-priced place again.(i have given it 1 because the staff was friendly )

Not really a Pub or Bar. More of a Restaurant. A Meat and Fries Place really but it's pretty damn good. Does what it says on the Tin and does not claim to be anything else. Priced Reasonably and i've always had good service in the 5/6 times i've been in.

I've lived in the area for a long time and eat in a lot of Crouch End restaurants. Monkey Nuts is one of my favorites, the breakfast is good and the burger very good too. It's a bit pricey but no more expensive than the gourmet burger place. I'm a bit confused by the poor service comments - I've not really noticed the service being bad or good, but it doesn't annoy me so it can't be that bad. In summary its decent food, good portions and (in my humble opinion) the second best fry up in Crouch End.
P.S. Monkey Nuts is not a bar - its a restaurant, I'd suggest you go somewhere cheaper for booze

The only two accusations of 'food poisoning'come from people who have not reviewed any other bar (I find that extremely odd, dont you?) Monkey Nuts is a well run, clean and fun place to go. The staff are professional and friendly. It may be a bit on the expensive side - but hey it's Crouch End. (The only place where inhabitants can afford 4X4 climate controlled buggies - so what the hell charge them for their burger - And no I am not attached to Monkey Nuts just a satisfied customer.

I recently went to this restaurant after reading the review about food poisoning thinking the same thing - a bit suspect. But after spending all night in A&E with my mother who had terrible food poisioning, not feeling too great myself and having other members of the party very sick too, I wished that I stayed away!

As a Crounch End local, I have been been going to Monkeynuts for some time. I went again on Friday and had an amazing steak, followed by a delicious sharing chocolate fondue, yummy. The service was fast and friendly which added to the great atmosphere.
Great for families too.
P.S The bad review with the name dropping seems like an advert for another restaurant.Suspect eh!

Visited this place on bonfire night. fantastic service, food and ambience!.... this place is not a pub really, more of a restaurant though. will definately recomment to lots of friends.

I have been an regular since this place opened and cant rave enough about it! this place has the best service in crouch end and the best burgers in London. The homemade brownie with vanilla icecream is to dye for along with the great cocktail list. I have stumbled out after a few too many on more than a number of occasions. The management team here is great along with the rest of the staff, and the queues that go out of the door on the weekend sum up what i and alot of other regulars think of this place! Its one of the few decent restaurants to go to in Crouch End.

Four of us went to Monkey Nuts last night because Pick More Daisies was fully booked. One couldn't walk home due to chronic stomach cramps and two others were ill in the middle of the night/next morning. I was ok - but I was the only one that didn't eat the chicken. Phoned the bar just now to notify them (I personally don't like it much so didn't want to negotiate free meal or anything!) and they were pleasant but could only say that they hoped it was nothing to do with them. Just wanted to warn others. BTW - Pick More Daisies is AMAZING ....

If you're the kind of dude who visits a pub called "Monkey Nuts" of your own free will, I suppose this place'll be exactly what you are looking for. Nuff said!

Poor, poor, poor. That pretty much sums up everything about our recent trip to Monkey Nuts. From the minute we went it we should probably have trusted our instincts and walked straight back out. The 'manager' left us waiting in the middle of the way while he continued to talk to his friends. Eventually got seated (the place wasn't even busy so no excuse for the poor service). Waited forever for our drinks to be taken by the very uninterested staff. Our food was distinctly average and to be honest completely over priced for what we got. We didn't get given cutlery until badgered our 'waitress' think having customers was a big inconvenience to her. A really disappointing night. Service charge was added to the bill but in hindsight we should have not cared about looking cheap and asked for it to be removed. It most certainly wasn't deserved. Never going back again.

I've been here a few times and the service was poor even if it's really quiet. It's well worth going on a weekday morning when you get two breakfasts for the price of one though!
|
Friendly, professional staff and management. Considering the type of customer they have to deal with. (Namely The Crouch End Organic Breast Feeding Mothers Society and there partners whether male or female)It is not a pub but a bar so any crits should be based on this fact. The food is more than adequate, after all...it is a burger bar....doh. They may add on service but it is OPTIONAL and if you don't have the guts to refuse it's your fault not theirs. I have recommended this venue to many people for informal dining with or without children and not one has diliked it.
|
Why "oh" why is it that when someone gets the capital to open up a place like Monkeys doodahhs or whatever it's called do they always fu%k it up? Chris you've got it right (8 Jan). What we all want in Crouch End is a Live music venue that has some bol&&cks. Exactaly something like The Hope & Anchor. Instead of another BOOORING middle class venue that overwhelms the pocket and underwhelms the senses! "BRING IT ON"..

I strolled into the pub looking for a decent steak. Asked for a table for one, was seated, ordered a beer and looked at the menu. The pub was relatively quiet and the staff were busy enjoying themselves. I looked at the menu and decided to have a fillet steak. I looked up at the staff who were still giggling and flirting with each other. And thought to myself why should I have to get their attention so carried on drinking my beer until eventually after about 14 minutes the girl who seated me decided to ask if I had ordered any food yet. By this time I was quite agitated and decided not to eat there. The service and customer care of this establishment needs to be looked into.

Been here a few times. More of a restaurant/bar than a pub. Great DJ on a wednesday night. Had some fantastic food here - great steak and burgers. Cocktails are delicious and there is an interesting mix of bottled beers. A bit pricey but worth it for the quality. Service really friendly. Recommend it to anyone!

Poor.
The food is ok, but heavily over-priced, and they have the cheek to add service on.
Drinks are, once again, very expensive and only bottled.
I'll never go back and I live around the corner.
Try the Hornsey Tavern or, if you must, the Queens. Crouch End is crap for pubs.

Crouch Ends latest drinking establishment 'Monkey Nuts' is trying so hard to be trendy and a bit wacky but unfortunately falls a bit flat. The main problems with it is that its pretty soulless, basically a big restaurant that as an afterthought has a small bar area, it should be the other way around. lts drinks are expensive, look to pay 3 for a bottle, theres no draft beers. The only redeeming features for me was pretty good music being played and the free Monkey Nuts. However even this delicacy wasn't really enough to make me want to go back....
When is someone going to re-open the Hogs Head and turn it into a proper pub??? Something like the Hope and Anchor down Upper Street would do me.
