Nasty place. Pretentious and overpriced. I won't be going back

There is a pretty decent kitchen here and it is well worth a visit for the food. The prices reflect the sort of pub this is, but are on the acceptable scale.

Where this pub real proves a winner though is in its wines, they offer a real good selection and unlike a lot of pubs if you want to buy something decent you can here. This is one of my preferred drinking spots in the Village, but it does get crowded.

This Youngs pub is a modernised and rather bland affair, with grey wallpaper and exposed brick and sky-high prices; With only one ale on handpump, I chose to go for a pint of Kirin Ichiban and was charged just shy of 4 for the privilege. Clientele comprise unsurprisingly of well-heeled Wimbledon village types. My dad tells me this once used to be a traditional locals boozer - bit of a shame it couldn't have stayed that way for a bit longer.

Definitely somewhere to go to eat, rather than drink. Young's Special the only ale available.

Oh no this is a very rowdy pub and a nightmare trying to get to the bar, resturant menu a bit limited. Not the place to go for a nice relaxing evening.

Right in the heart of Wimbledon village (which doesn't really look much like a village, with almost all of its old buildings long since demolished, but which is very nice nonetheless), this is a great gastro pub with a nice atmosphere and really good food.

It's in the Village so what do you expect, neutral decor but fairly lively gastro style pub. Beer average to good. Visited last Saturday but not much food been downed and neither did I partake so no comment on quality or range.

Highly commendable effort and certainly one of the better places to eat in the village. However, it's not a gastropub in my books for the simple reason I don't think the food is THAT good. Maybe it is a gastro and just not a totally successful one. That said, the food is interesting and tasty, though almost definetely not homemade or entirely fresh. The room itself is best described as neutral, though for just a pint I imagine it'd be totally souless. A bit of a mixed bad then, but decent enough to be worth making your own mind up about.

This is a very pleasant Gastro Pub. I would not class it as a terriffic drinking hole though, far to busy being a resturant. I would say that the both the food and the service were excellent, I started with char grilled squid and it was stunning, in a melt in your mouth way that i did not think possible. I followed it with the Roast Beef (it was a Sunday after all) which was nothing special apart from the vast amount of lovely medium rare beef that you were served. And the pudding was almost as good as the starter, I really nice moist, good sized portion of sticky toffee pudding and ice cream.
but...
Iwas incredibly noise in there, you really had to shout to make yourself heard, which of course just increase the noise level, I blame dodgey accoustics. Also it was pretty expensive.
So all in all good a gastro pub, worth a visit about once or twice a year. oh and beer wise only had the Carlsberg was was nice a lively, but it is only Carlsberg, so if you want proper booze head to a proper pub.

I'm no commener but too snooty!! Food highly overated and too crowded and tatty... Sorry!

This place is very much at the gastro end of gastropub. In fact, I'd say it's pretty much just a restaurant. Food is high quality and prices reflect that (30 or so for dinner and half a bottle of wine or thereabouts), but for the same price you could do better.

good food, great german beer, but wine is heavily over-priced. be warned.

Terrific drinking hole with fine female clientele. Good grub too. Definitely recommend this abode. Has managed to combine the contemporary with the tradition styles to create a cracking boozer. Last time I was there I pulled a rubber plant.

Very comfortable sofas, great (and very cold) Amstel on tap, terrific menu, tasty barmaids and no riff-raff. Great!

Absolutely superb food, great clientele, prices are good for wimbledon village. Slight drawback is the occasionally slow and surly service from listless staff.

Good atmosphere, reasonable food and exceptionally rude, patronising staff...

This tarted up pub won a Gastro Pub of the year award from Time out or the Evening Standard or someone. Can't see why - the food was okay but menu extremely limited. Beer was foul (and returned), staff were uncivil. Popular though.

I was disappointed by the limited menu. Pleasant staff.

This place was the Dogs when the Castle. My best pub when at college and uni. Lots of week day evenings where spent in here. Sexy barmaids for eye candy, good beeros. And Euro 96 was just brilliant, every game a right laugh. Sadly now a poncy yuppie bistro-pub. All goog things come to an end.

Excellent food, limited selection for veggies but it is lovely all the same. Pricey but well worth it!

Fantastic Pub, Great atmosphere, staff and food. Haven't seen so much attention to detail in service and honesty regarding what is good and what is better. Can't recommend a better place

Food is pricey. But excellent. Everything cooked fresh. Definitely a change for the better!
FoxyChick - 17 Apr 2003 19:34
Used to be a pub called the Castle and was dreadful back then full of old men and drug addicts/drunks. Now complete re-vamp and great for Friday and Saturday evenings and lunchtimes. always mobbed and lots of beautiful people. Very pricey food though for something so basic as that which they serve. Staff pleasant and friendly
