A local's pub sitting just back from a busy crossroads, on Saturday afternoon the Standard had a steady tick over of customers, varying from Guardian readers to more earthy types turning up later in the afternoon.
Completely refurbished with bare floorboards and modern furniture (some of the tables needed a wipe) there is an open fire at either end of the u-shaped bar. Sitting by one of the fires on leather armchairs and settee was very cosy on a chilly afternoon. The Gents were clean and tidy.
The pub seems particularly dog friendly, with the pub itslf having two - a boxer and a border collie, neither of which were any bother. The landlord and landlady seemed solicitous and friendly.
Beer wise, disappointingly only one ale was on pump - the boringly ubiquitous London Pride. It was in fine condition however, half way through the afternoon the barrel was changed and the quality remained consistent.
It looks like they have stopped doing food, as it has been crossed out on their extenal signage. Quizes are advertised for Monday evenings and their is a skittle ally at the rear.
Not one to travel any distance to seek out, but perfectly decent at serving it's local custom base.

my grandad used to own this pub (john), and by the way andycrofts he hasnt passed away he moved away, and the man glenn that owned it after was not my uncle (johns son)!!

Glad to see it reopened and totally refurbished. I hardly recognised it when I walked compared to how it used. All the jukeboxes, fruit machines et all have been cleared out - only the dart board survives. Guess they don't want any "undesirables" drinking there. Only have London Pride as an ale and they're hoping to do food in 2010. Given time, I'm hoping this'll be a decent boozer once again.

Under new ownership. Nicely decorated and welcoming staff

Moderate boozer. Having moved to Finland, I haven't visited for maybe 4 years. The owner (John?) told me he was quite ill at the time, so maybe he's passed away. His son, Glenn tried to run it, but liked to smack the customer's heads in rather than run a pub. Hope it's in better hands now.

Big changes coming soon, watch this space.

Closed again (Sept 08).

Have noticed this place has reopened presumably with new owners.
Have had some enjoyable evenings there in the past. It'll be interesting to see if there's been any improvements from what was before...

Closed and boarded up currently (March 08).

Had to leave after one pint as it reminded me of Phoenix Nights too much!!!! Not my ideal boozer - personal opinion of course

Stopped here the other day. I remember that it used to have amazing flowers out the front. It has changed ownership and that doesn't seem to of done it any harm. It's a nice old fashioned pub with local people dring in it and they were all very friendly. Beer was good and well kept with pleasent attentive staff and the Food looked good too. The pub is however quite run down and is at this moment in time being renovated by the new owners. Watch this space! A good local with much promise.

Yes the Standard of England is very much going - I'm there most Thursday nights doing karaoke! It did though change hands last Christmas and since then there has been a new food menu, guest ales, pool table, live music evening and new digital jukebox have been introduced.
And one for the ladies there'll be an Ann Summers night there on Monday 1st May 2006!!!

I have my doubts that this pub is still here. Not much sign of life. Any updates?

This happens to be my local where I've spent many a p#$$#d night there! It's very much a geezers pub but there's quite afriendly atmosphere. Facillities include beer garden, juke box, a reasonabley sized function room and a big screen for sporting events. I think it could do with a like of paint inside (lol!)and it would be great if we had more entertainment like karaoke, live music etc. All in all though a good community pub.
