Freehold sold and being converted into yet another shop, I believe it has been bought by Peatlings Wine Shop.

UPDATE:Reopened suddenly last year and the new Landlords have gone for the ,pint buck' again. Happy hour 5-7pm weeknights.pool table.A few wankers in there, but they tend to follow the happy hours anyway. Would I go in? Nah,Its gotta be The Corn Exchange (Wetherspoons) if I want this sort of crowd.

This pub has recently closed.

I recently went into this pub after hearing about the refurbishment and was very impressed. I spoke to the staff (who were very polite) and they told me the pub is now run by a couple who lease the premises.
From what I understand Leaseholders and tenants pay high prices for their beer unlike Weatherspoons who have massive buying power and get their beer at next to nothing there is no way they can compete. (hence why pubs are going skint!)
It obviously cost a lot of money to do up the pub which is now keeping out the undesirables - I say well done and good luck!

Yes,they've done a good job tarting this place, and its now unrecognisable to what it was. But does it offer anything new to the other countless 'upmarket' pubs that now seek to serve the 'brown cords from London brigade' in Bury St Edmunds?Well..........no. And the tariff?Very expensive. So a nice paint-job,yet strangely sterile and generic in feel. Bring on the Wetherspoons at the Corn Exchange site, then maybe pubs like this will have to sit-up and start to become more competitive price-wise. It's high time that English pub culture was given back to the working classes, and these pubs do nothing to do that.

The comment posted Dec 2008 refers to the pub when it was known as the Rising Sun. You need to visit this pub to see the incredible transformation that has taken place. The inside is full of antiques and a chesterfield. There are even newspapers to read. The bar staff all look very smart indeed in their black uniforms and are very polite and helpful. The food is excellent and the patio garden is lovely too. It's a completely different pub to what it used to be. Please go and support the new licensees - you won't be disappointed.

I went in here today for the first time in years. What a transformation. Now called the St Edmund's Tavern. This place has certainly had the treatment. Now turned into a stylish olde world style bar that looks to attract the food crowd. I found the 3-10 for a pint a IPA a bit pricey but it was one of the best IPA's I've had in the town where it's brewed. I'd certainly drink here again and it's definitely lost the rough image it used to have.

Once a good local pub tied to Market days on Weds and Sat. Now a somewhat rough affair, with regular piss-heads holding Court at the bar. One to avoid.
