Thank you all. Those who liked the place and those who didn't. It has been a privilege to have met you all and have the opportunity to serve, educate, introduce new beers or dishes to the local area, make friends and learn. Learn not only the business but also the customer relationships. It has been great, thank you.

a nice wee place serving a wide variety of belgian-style beers and new world ales all heartingly served in the correct glass! some of the regulars can be a bit odd and has the feel of a continental bar rather than a pub which might put off some. possibly a bit overpriced but all in all a nice place to retire after a bad day at the office.

Lovely food and a beer choice that's moving towards new world beers rather than its old Belgian focus. Oh and if you order the fish or chicken goujons and thing you're just getting something out of a freezer bag, be prepared for something far better!

However be prepared to carry cash - they've recently stopped taking credit cards.

Apart from mental people who own the bar - Sylwia - mad Polish woman who at the end of my party told my guests (who were already waiting outside for taxi) to f... off and yelled all sorts of abuse on her and her husband - Ian, Scottish guy who went home with rest of the party for more drinks and got so hammered he kicked and punched my fiend to the point that she was all swollen and badly bruised and then moved on to me - the place is ok!!! I am telling you guys - never go there! you dont know how your evening might end... in the hospital or at the very least a police station!

Oh dear. What has gone wrong here. An out of the way gastropub with character becomes a charmless eaterie. The selection of lagers is reduced to a barely drinkable stock Dutch pint for 2.90 or if you fancy something tasty you can pay 4.50(!) for Erdinger. Barstaff no longer do table service and to add to the misery greet you with a "you're lucky to get service" attitude. And the pub bore still terrorises the place (owners, barstaff, you know who he is - for god's sake get rid). Used to frequent this place. Now am walking twice the distance for bars I'd written off. What a shame.

The hideaway is the right name for it. I went there this evening and walked right past it and had to ask a passer-by for its location. It's in a terraced row of shops and has the appearance of a shop entrance. It is very dimly lit and the actual bar area is very narrow and restricted, most of the seating being stools set into the walls. The clientele were generaly 40-year-olds going on twenty and there was the the usual inane pop music going on. I didn't try the food so I can't comment, but if you are looking for a dim, crammped, pop music type pub and have a shaven head and wear a checkered shirt, this is definitely your kind of pub.

This place has a friendly cosy atmosphere, great staff and the food was excellent (the main menu rather than the bar snacks which were very average).

There's a restaurant bit at the back which often feels quite empty but you can have the proper menu in the front too - 2 courses for 11 which was very reasonable given the quality and size of portions.

I was so excited when I first came across this! What a shame it has disappointed me - beers not filled to the line even though we were the only ones in the bar, 10% service charge automatically put on our bill for two roasts put in front of us with no cutlery or condiments, strange off-hand staff.... could do miles better!!

Had driven past this place so many times before finally deciding to give it a try 6 months back. Was very glad I popped in. There's a very relaxed atmosphere, it's comfortable and they have a superb range of beers. I liked the place a lot but only stopped for one as I was driving. Decided to go back for a Sunday lunch and my appreciation of the Hideaway bar went up another notch as the food was great. You can tell that the owners are prepared to go that little bit further with effort and quality. You can pay the same for a Sunday lunch in many of the areas other pubs and bars, but here you get real value. Just been back there today and it is still great. Try it.

This place is excellent. Relaxed atmosphere, very friendly staff, and you dont even have to get up to go to the bar.

Its not the place to go if you want a lively bar but if you want to chill out and have decent food and excellent beer then i would highly recommend it.

Do an excellent offer on sundays of if you buy 2 sunday roasts you get a bottle of wine free which was very drinkable.

The friendliness is the best part though, nowhere have i walked in for the second time with a hangover and the barmaid sat me down and brought over a bloody mary, whilst laughing at my sorry state.

Nice well kept beer and tasty food. Pleasant friendly bar staff and locals. Clean and tidy. What more could you want? I will def return.

This has been my local for 3.5 years. Used to be called Jasper's, then Wilkie's. 14 different bottled Belgian beers (plus a few other kinds of beer on tap), really friendly staff, hell, even the Scottish chef recognised me after I'd only been in there a couple of times!

It is perfect just chilling there with a mate or two, on a sofa, with a tasty Belgian beer warming the cockles of your heart. I guarantee you'll be back, and the fact that it is not a branch of a chain, makes it even better.

I've only ever had the snacky food, which is good, but the restaurant bit at the back is popular enough to know that the main meals are great, too.

Do it.

we love it the best in town no pushy bar staff booting you out at last orders!!! where the drinker rules. you only have to get up to the toilet as the beers are served at your table.
mememeyou - 28 Apr 2005 17:05
This place is really fun, food is very good and you will not be disappointed with the beers, and i do believe they stock the top 10 beer in the world. If only i live nearby i will be going back in a hurry...
mememeyou - 23 Feb 2005 20:34
Warm and comphy, The food was totally unexpected. it was brill. The beers... mmmm, what can i say about the beers there is so much of them, If any of you boys and girls get a chance pay it a visit, it properly well worth it.

Delirium Premium Beer was the best.

hiyagoodluck - 23 Feb 2005 20:22
overpriced but then again you get a decent meal and a decent drink
anonymous - 20 Feb 2005 13:51
went because it was highly rated and was sorely dissapointed, maybe i got a bad egg but the staff were very rude, " what ever happened to the customer is always right?", a real shame i wasted one of my only free nights in london visiting here!!
miketoms - 15 Feb 2005 22:33
Wilkies is shithot. What more is there to say? Never had a bad meal, never had a bad drink, never had a bad night! 'nuff said!
The Bear!

BronzeBear - 15 Feb 2005 21:22
I can only assume the previous poster last ate out when you could get change from sixpence if he thinks Wilkie's is overpriced. Located a short walk from the heart of Wimbledon, this restaurant manages to combine cosiness with a subtle atmosphere, fine dining at a fraction of the cost you'd pay in the West End and possibly the friendliest staff on the planet! It offers a wide selection of food and beers and they are always happy to accommodate if you want something not on the menu. Great for families and couples alike, it's the one place we would take friends and colleagues for a guaranteed excellent meal.

i take nnvicks has never been to wilkies.
think this person prefers the real hole this site had been for the last 10 years.
on behalf of my neigbours thank god its there!!
and overpriced!! now who comes from croydon?
eat out often?
boz01 - 15 Feb 2005 10:43
Sorry there is no way I could go past this and leave it with a 10. Sorry "nothing like it in London" - nothing this bland perhaps, I mean for god sakes this place is soooo dull and is extraordinarily overpriced for somewhere that is next to a tramstop to Croydon. I can only assume Julio either owns the place or works there - "nothing like it in London" - what a ridiculuos thing to say....
nnvicks - 14 Jan 2005 13:00
Nothing else like it in london
We have Family in Wimbledon and always choose to meet them in there own turf.It is always a pleasure to visit Wilkies the best food and choice of beer.
