Went here on the evening of the England Algeria game. Was in Browns beforehand and everything stopped for the match. Not here though. Oh no. Carried on regardless. Magnificently sleazy.

Mingin - girls are deffo back in force and are OK, but horribly dressed (or is that undressed) most of girls OK and will back off when asked politely. Beer range is pathetic though - best they had near to Real Ale was Newcastle Brown in tins - if you want girls and better vibe go to Browns, out door right and further down on same side.

"have the girls gone?" - Yes the girls have gone!! Its justa regualr pub now, with different music types on during the week. If you after the girls yourll need to wander on down to Browns, White Hoorse and the Rainbow.

What a dive.. Over priced poor drinks. Music is ok, but no good enough to put up with the venue. Grumpy staff look as miserable as the venue. They seem relaxed on substances they shouldn't be relaxed on! ceiling drips when it rains. Gets a 1 vote for making staying at home no longer the worst thing I could do!

have the girls gone?

Dont believe the hype. The weekends here are rubbish. So what if its rock and roll or funk. The venue has to be up to it. The place is a tip. Yes its one of the last victorian pubs in the area but it desperately needs a makeover and the whold place given an update.
Too many wannabees for me with fancy haircuts and all the right gear. Drinks overpriced. Im giving it a two because it still has some of the Victorian features left.

Full of old street Nathan Barley types now it's been taken over. It was one of my favourite London pubs before it had new management. I will try it again someday if I'm down Mon-thu.
That be told they were playing some proper Manchester classics when I was there at the beginning of November. The Smiths, Joy Division, even things like the Doves. I think the DJ must have been a Manc.
The drinks were overpriced and even though it was gone 10 when we arrived it also tasted like they had been waterered down a bit. And as mentioned the people there were all a bit snobby and looked down on you if you weren't wearing the right clothes. They haven't changed the dcor one bit though!
|
I think this place has been taken over recently because it has different music on different nights. I know the weekends are busy with the fashionable types that have taken over the rest of the area. It still looks like it always has though. If you're a fan of the "old" axe better find somewhere new
The Eagle is gone as well .

I've been to this pub on a Saturday and Sunday nights and the atmosphere is great. It's a grotty east end pub the way they used to be. Yes there is still the look of a strip bar but the nights where it's taken over are cool. The Sunday nights rock n roll is a must.
Just make sure you choose the right night.
|
this pub has gone to pot no atmosphere no more. The old bill ave got them by the balls!
|
Rubbish. Was there last Friday and they're grinding like it's 1999. And, yes mate, it is offensive if you don't have the horn!!! One for the punters: do bring some cash as they charge 10% for withdrawals in the pub.
Some of the beer on tap can be a bit offish, I recommend the lovely Guinness and the occasional sambuca thrown in for good measure. As an aside, the whiff of the place is the stuff of legend; musky, with a note of mouldy carpet and a hint of fanny. Beautiful - enjoy.

Well, I think reports of the "death" of the Axe have been rather overstated - went there last Friday and had a great time - girls still gorgeous ! OK, the "grinding" has gone - but I was never there for that (should I have the horn ?, is it an insult if I don't ? - too much angst - just sit back and enjoy the view)- the stand-out attraction of this place is the fact that the girls will chat to you like a human being (as long as you don't act like a mindless yob) This is a "once a year" treat for me, and on the evidence of last Friday, one I will be repeating next year

I'm afraid it's true.
Spoke to one of my girls tonight and got the story. It isn't the guvnor enforcing this but the rozzers. All was well until last Saturday (5th) and then they were told to enfore the 2ft rule.
Tonight there were more girls than punters and the best looking of them all told me she'd only made 10 (after house fee etc) in nearly 5hrs. Poor sod.
It's the end of the Axe. It's heartbreaking
Where can anyone get a proper lapdance now
|
Well its all over now!! As off Sunday 6th January the girls in Ye Old Ax can no longer do lap dances. The guv'nor has decided that only private dances are allowed, whether this is because of presure from the local council or perhaps he thinks he can drop one of the bouncers, who knows. Also as this is a quiet period of year the number of girls have been cut back to 6 in the week (not sure on weekends).
For those unsure a Lap Dance means the girls can touch you as much as they want, eg grinding etc and of course its not unknown for a client to get a little feel in themslves (providing the girl dont mind). A private dance means the girl girl just dances between your legs with no touching from anyone allowed. You still pay 20 just for this.
Browns girls also do private dances, they are considerably hotter, the beer is cheaper and better quality, there is no door charge unlike the Ax and is generally a nicer place. I know which one I will be going to from now on.
|
Quality of the beer's still none too good, the landlord also sticks an extra 50 pence on the all the prices after 11pm. But then people only go to the Ax for the girls, who whilst not as pretty as those found in the more upmarket joints will actually sit & chat with you and I challenge anyone to tell me of a UK strip joint that gives you better quality private dances than you get here.
If going on a Saturday - be warned the dances stop at 1am'ish to make room for a Rockabilly thing that goes on all night (still serving beer and they dont kick anyone out) and the prettiest girl works behind the bar anyway (I love you Kira, make mine a Cider and red After-Shock please).

A friend took me along for the first time and I had an absolute blast. Wasn't sure what to expect so had a look at the previous reviews. Yes - the beer is rubbish but the girls were great. They were very friendly and not pushy for you to tak a dance at all, and whilst some were more attractive than others, each one was pleasant to talk to and have a laugh with. The dances were first class too! Definitely going back soon.
Went to Browns for comparison and although I've no complaints about it either I was much happier in the Axe.

As one or two on here have pointed out this pub has a rather impressive interior. As "pound in a pint glass" strip joints go it is probably about the best - unfortunately it is at the far end of Shoreditch High St from the City so I'm alway fairly blathered by the time I arrive. Girls are usually ok but as with all these places there are always a few mingers lurking
In his list of pubs Andrew Smith forgot the classic "Crown and Shuttlecock" - a real dive where the pool table doubled up as the stage for the girls.
|
One of only a few 'coins in a pint glass' type strip pubs that are left now. The glory days were probably about 10 years ago - who remembers the Norfolk Punch, Spread Eagle, Rose and Crown, Seven Stars... the list went on!
Get in before 5pm and relax the gentleman's way.
|
Massive brawl here tonight! Glass everywhere and a lot of broken noses. Seemed to be full of aging hackney d*ckheads rather than the usual City boys. Felt a bit sorry for the girls - they looked terrified.

Had the luxury (or punishment) of a repeat stag on consectutive weekends! Went to Browns first weekend - apart from the dance with the really cute Venezuelan chick it was rubbish. Second weekend - the Axe! Wow! Great fun pub. Beer is rubbish. Spirits are watered down or made out of petrol but everything else is perfect. Nice low-down dirty strip joint! Perfect!
|
A lot of girls (mostly Brazilian - are there any left in Brazil?) - 20 for a good dance ;-) very close! not as many rules as Browns, girls not quite as good. 3 now after 5 PM to get in. 10 girls at 1pm to 5pm, more after 5pm! worth a visit - drinks - keep to bottles.....
anonymous - 16 Oct 2006 17:30 |
Lots of new girls there now, went on a Friday (just after new year) was 20-30 girls, still loads of Brazillian babes and a few home-grown one girls too (some chuncky essex girl but the others were all lovely). Care needed with the doorman. Paid one guy 4quid to get in at 9pm then had another guy come around at 2am telling people that he was the real doorman and demanding more money (will lower my rating). Doormen/man aside this is still the best strip-joint London has to offer.

A beautiful victorian pub, a throw back to the days (not so long ago) when London pubs were the best in the country, if not the world.Full of punters there for the strippers, and local E2 people alike! A good mix and it works well.shame about the beer! Probably the worst pint of Guinness i've ever had!
anonymous - 23 Nov 2005 12:05 |
Still the best strip joint in town not trying to be something its not like so many of the others
|
The Axe used to be a cracking little venue used by the local Old Bill and ruffians alike. Nowadays it gets a bit too busy with allsorts. Still, if you can ignore the naked girls for one moment you will notice that this pub has a lovely traditonal gin-palace-esque interior that is worth the entrance fee alone. Beer is as you would expect for a venue of this ilk. Best stick to bottles and leave the pint pots for collecting coins.
|
Not a place for to bring the Missus and the Kids. Another 1 for the Shoreditch Triangle, 2 minutes from Browns. Worth a stopover if you dont fancy the crush at Browns. Was 4 girls last time I was there, not quite the quality of the girls at Browns, but found the private dance (20quid a pop) to be a little bit more hands on (if you can be hands on without touching). Perhaps it was just the beer, but I certainly felt a shiver to my nether regions that I hadnt experienced 30 minutes before at Browns. Staff were friendly, few suits, couple of locals. Interior wasnt too shabby, although private dance room was a little dingy. Overall would recommend this as a quickstop an a boys night out.
