Now the Lion and Key, this is a decent pub serving a fairly limited but excellent quality menu specialising in fish & chips. Always a good choice of well kept cask ales. Check opening times first, as it doesn't open on Mondays and closes fairly early once food has stopped.

Now the Lion & Key and thankfully, the service is now back in good order. They were doing a roaring trade of a late October Tuesday although the whole place does reek bit of cheap and plentiful British fried food. The ale selection and quality was everything to write home about though.

Character pub, but food expensive, fish and chips £10+. People(tourists) were eating but would have preferred better value menu. Went to Wilberforce Weatherspoons because of the price! Should be £6-£8. Beer good but out on a limb. Eat elsewhere but visit for the pub atmosphere

Unusual and cosy pub with about 10 hand pumps. The food coming downstairs from the kitchen looked substantial and good quality.

Good selection of ales. Wonder if the on-site brewery will ever be used to brew? Staff very friendly.

Dropped in quarter past two on a saturday afternoon. Nice newly refurbished bar with plenty of interesting ales on. However there was no one to serve me although the pub had a few people in the bar was unstaffed, Gave up at 20 past and went elsewhere. Can't mark it on the beer - can mark it on the (non existent) service

Called for Lunch on Saturday , best pub fish and chips ever had , that good had same on Sunday . good selection of real ales . Will call again when back in Hull
|
Now The Lion & Key, with a microbrewery at the back (not yet running?). Much improved for it. Had about 6 ales on, inlcuding a couple from Newsome Brewery. Well worth stopping off between White Harte, Walters and Black Boy.

Lovely bar. Recent refurb - looks fab! Proper Hull 'Old Town' bar with a modern twist. Tucked away in one of our lovely old cobbled streets. Seems to attract friendly groups of people and always get served quickly by friendly staff. Pity no more live bands on a Sat night - and still miss the oversized Connect 4!!

Great dedicated real cider pub (and ale too if you're that way inclined) and now serving food too!
|
Quite a narrow selection of unappetising reale ales on this visit. Still a bit of rock/goth/indie/music pub, popular with the non-chav young 'uns. Big sofas and leather seats, large and roomy bar. Not an essential stop for the discerning real ale drinker, but it's always full of life and worth a look.

Terrific. Very friendly, best in the area.

Now just called 'Nellys' and run by the same people who own Walters, up the street, with similar large selection of drinks.
|
Great pub. As referred to below, look out for David Elf, who can literally play any song you like on the guitar. The pub also has one of the best barman I've ever been served by, ginger haired fella with a ponytail. Never too much trouble for him to pour your Guiness and bring it over to your table for you to save you waiting at the bar.

I think this pub has been refurbished since the previous reviews, and is very nice now. It's run by the same people as Walter's and has a very good selection of beers and a good atmosphere at the weekends. It's pretty quiet during the week, but at least you're guaranteed a seat.

Great pub with awesome monthly comedy lineup
|
Busy most Fridays and Saturdays when there is live music (usually Irish but look out for David Elf). Music generally starts about 9.30 till 12.30ish. Guinness is OK but I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Black Sheep last weekend. Best part of the experience is the service - no matter how busy you are never lept waiting long and the staff are always pleasant.

As an irishman(woman)this bar was not overly cheesy and always packed on st Paddys day! But the stout needs a bit of improvment! All in all good atmosphere.
|
Pseudo Irish songs on a loop, giant Jenga and table football, nice comfy sofas at the front. Would you believe they serve Guinness? The Durty Nelly's on tap is no more unfortunately (although they might empty a drip tray into a glass for you if you're lucky)
